Business Assignment
Introduction
The company that I have chosen for my OB project is Maaden. Maaden is the number one
mining company in Saudi Arabia. It started as a small business during 1997, and now, with a
small help from the Saudi Government, is one of the most powerful companies in all Saudi
Arabia. Its main focus was the expansion of gold but now with the operational experience of
its partners, SABIC and Alcoa, Maaden has developed a Phosphate company and it has
started an Aluminum project which is still under construction. In 2011, the phosphate
company started its production, and in 2012, the Aluminum project started being under
construction. In 2013, the company reported an increase of its net profit of more than a
360%. No other company in Saudi Arabia has ever experienced such a huge increase in its
net profit in such a short time. The company actually expects to increase its net profit even
more when the Aluminum project is finished. The CEO of the company told in an interview
that Maaden is expecting to triple its net profit in less than one year after the Aluminum
company starts producing.
in its logo by drawing a yellow spark on the top of its logo. The yellow part of its logo
represents the spark of pure gold when it is exposed to the light. Another representation of
its culture is the green letters of its logo. Maaden chose green because green is the color of
the national flag of Saudi Arabia, and also because it represents peace for Saudi Arabians.
The founder of the company wanted to show people that this company was proud of being
from Saudi Arabia and that it was such a peaceful company that customers from all around
the world could trust it.
3. Maaden uses only high technology which has helped it achieve Health and Safety
excellence. By achieving Health and Safety excellence, Maaden has been able to
proveits ethical responsibility and to ensure its environmentally friendly operations.
Objectives:
Some of the main objectives of this company are: To be the dominant player in the mining
industry, to have a competitive cost of energy, to continue having a good position in the
market for its products, and to use only the most advanced technology.
Maaden is trying to accomplish all its objectives by developing and/or strengthening
existing project that can help them maximize the value of its company. By doing this, the
company expects to become the dominant player in the mining industry. Another thing
that the company is doing to accomplish its objective is to invest millions of dollar on R&D
so that the company can have the best technology in the country that can help the
company to minimize costs. By having the best technology in the country, Maaden will be
able to keep a competitive cost of energy and to continue having a good position in the
market.
History:
The company was first started in 1997 by the Saudi Arabian Government and Tadawul.
When they first decided to create this business, they wanted to create a strong company
that could be well known in many foreign countries. They felt the necessity to show other
people that their country was able to have a reliable company. They did not have any role
models but they said in an interview that their people, Saudi Arabians, were their main
inspiration. They wanted to make them proud. This is why they decided to use green color
for the letters of the companys logo. From the day they founded this company, they have
also try to be ethical, treat their customers with respect, and to achieve their main of
becoming the dominant mining company in the world.
Elevator Speech:
In summary, Maaden is a very successful company that has been able to become one
of the most powerful companies in Saudi Arabia. This company has a very unique
culture because it is one of the few companies that truly wants to use the experience
and skills of every of its employees and Shareholders to maximize the value of the
company. For Maaden, every member of its company is an important and unique piece
in the future success of the company. Maaden is also really focus on providing the best
quality service and products to its customers, and to become the strongest mining
company in the world.
STRATEGY
SWOT Analysis:
1. Strength: Maaden has a very strong mission, visions, and values. For the
company, it is very important to follow their vision and values so that it can
accomplish its main mission (to become the most powerful mining company in
the world). Maaden has successfully followed its visions and values which has
helped the company be now the second most powerful company in Saudi Arabia.
2. Weakness: The biggest weakness that the company is facing right now is the
conflict of interest among its shareholders. During this year, the company has
experienced some conflict of interests that has caused Maaden to delay some
important future projects.
3. Opportunity: Saudi Arabia geology is its biggest opportunity. There is a large
portion of the kingdom that has not been explored yet and that could provide
Maaden with the opportunity to expand and diversify into different minerals. The
company could actually add more value to potential downstream by expanding
and diversifying into other minerals.
4. Threat: The biggest threat that this company has is the commodity price
volatility of Gold and Phosphate. With this volatility, there is a huge threat on the
companys revenue, mine optimization, contracting, and transactions. This
volatility could have a negative impact on the operating results of the company
that could cause severe problems for Maaden.
Core Competences:
Maaden has done many useful things that have helped in the success of the company.
One of the many things that this company has done very well is to be committed in many
corporations such as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). These corporations have
allowed Maaden to contribute in a positive way to the well-being of people, environment,
and economy. Maaden has been categorized as a responsible company which not only
cares about making profit, but also cares about its employees, environment, and its
shareholders. Thanks to this, the companys reputation has increased enormously which
has helped Maaden to succeed in the market very easily.
The main mission of this company is to become the most powerful mining company in the
world. Some of its main objectives are: To be a dominant player in the mining industry, to
have a competitive cost of energy, to continue having a good position in the market for its
products, and to use only the most advanced technology.
Structure:
Maadens Board of Directors includes the CEO, Chairman of the board, and 7 directors. They
are in charge of the overall performance of the company and only the CEO is directly
monitoring the performance of the sublevels of the company. N-1 is the next organizational
level of the company. Here we can find the vice presidents of the sublevels. Each vice
president is responsible for the performance of a specific area of the company. The next level
is N-2 where we find Sales Representative for Phosphate, Treasurer, Investor Relations
Officer, and the External Communication Manager.
In Maaden, the CEO, Directors, and Chairman decide what it is best for the company and its
shareholders. When they make a decision, the CEO communicates the decision to each vice
president individually. Then, each vice president organizes a meeting in his or her own area
where they make a plan to accomplish the goals given by the CEO. When the plan is ready,
the vice president sends a copy of the plan to the CEO who revises it and once it is approved,
the vice president puts the plan into action. Also, the vice president of the Phosphate area
(most profitable area of the company) works together with the sales representative to make
sure they meet the estimated sales for year. The Financial area works together with the
treasurer and investor relations to make sure that the company is financially stable.
In my opinion, Maadens organizational structure is not well aligned with its strategy.
Maaden wants to invest money on explorations that could allow the company to diversify in
other minerals. This diversification strategy is really important for the future success of the
company. However, as we can see from the chart above, the exploration area does not have
any direct communication with the financial area of the company. It is impossible to be
investing millions of dollars on exploration when there is not communication between these
two. Maadens diversification strategy could increase the companys revenue in more than
90%, but if this communication issue between these two areas (Exploration and Financial)
continues, it will be hard for the company to accomplish its future plans.
Another thing that I didnt like about Maadens organizational structure is that it is too
broad. It does not provide all the levels of the company and, just by looking at it, it is really
hard to understand it.
to evaluate the Consequences that his decisions have had for the company
(creating policies, hiring CEO, etc). If the Chairman sees that the CEO is not focus on
the strategies of the company or that the CEO is not doing a good job at running the
company, the Chairman is allowed to fire the CEO immediately.
2. Vice President of Finance, Khaled bin Saleh Al-Rowals:
position, the person needs at least 10 years of experience in the field of finance.
The vice President of Finance is in charge of all the financial transactions of the
company and to create a budget that can ensure the financial stability of the
company. The Desire Results of the Vice President is to avoid bankruptcy and to
make sure that the company continues being financially stable. Guidelines, the
Vice President of Finance has to follow and make sure all the employees of his area
follow the guidelines and policies given by the CEO of Maaden. Resources, before
the Board of Directors makes any decision about a new project, the Vice President
needs to provide a budget to the Board that will tell them whether it is a good idea
to put into action a new project. Accountability, whatever happens in the financial
area of the company, the vice president is responsible for it. If the financial
department gives the board a non-accurate budget that causes major financial
issues to the company, the vice president will be accountable for it and he will be
terminated immediately. Consequences, if the Vice Presidents keeps good track of
the finance of the company, Maaden should keep growing as a profitable company.
Recruiting Plan:
Maaden is interested in hiring people who have good problem solving skills, analytical skills,
people skills, excellent communication, energy, passion for results, and high values similar to
Maadens. Maaden is committed to the Government announced Saudization program which
gives preference to provide jobs to Saudi Nationals. When the company cant find a Saudi
who is qualified for the job, Maaden invites people from all over the world to join the
company. In this case, Maaden announces the job opening in international websites and
newspaper of different countries.
To attract and to keep the best people in the company, Maaden offers unparalleled job
security, high level of job satisfaction, strong relationships and teamwork, attractive
remuneration, and attractive lifestyle opportunities.
To apply to this amazing company, the only thing that a person needs to do is to upload a CV
to the companys website. Once they review the application, the applicant has an
introductory interview face-to face with the Human Resources Team. If the applicant passes
to the next level, he or she will have a final recruitment interview.
Control:

mission of the company is to maximize the mineral resources just for its stakeholders and willing to adopt the best
possible way to achieve it.
The vision of Maaden is becoming the well-known mining company of worldwide level. It wants to keep its
reputation in high level so customers can feel safe doing business with it.
The important and main thing regarding the company is its core values that are created to fortify the companys

company wants to provide the highest ethical standards for not only its stakeholders but also for all its customers.
Maaden wants to take care of all its customers because if it wasnt for them Maaden would not be as successful and
profitable as it is today. Also teamwork is important for this company. Maaden wants to work together with its
