High Pass

Interview Questions:

Low Pass

Technical:
Skillls:

Probe station, working environment, lab environment, AWR pcb layout design

AWR :

system simulation, RF circuit simulation, electromagnetic analysis, see if

correct gain is given, pcb layout design

Transmission lines: encounter impedance(characteristic) at high frequency

Filters: to separate frequency bands
Low pass, high pass, band pass, band stop

RF:

Switching products: can route signals to Devices Under Test (DUT)

Bandwidth: maximum frequency that a device can handle with acceptable

loss
Single pole double throw (SPDT): routes two inputs to one output or vice
versa
Multiplexors: multiple inputs to one output or vice versa
o May be made up of multiple SPDT
o Less cables, less insertion loss( power loss or attenuation)

Passive devices: Dont require electrical power to operate, no power gain

Attenuator : decreases frequency by attenuating the wave

Capacitors, resisitors, inductor
Couplers, adapters

Active devices: Requires power to operate

Transistors (bjts), diodes, ic, MOSFETS

Amplifiers (low rf freq to high)

MUX: 2to 1, 4 to one

Equations:

Ohms law: V = IR
Parallel: (R1*R2)/(R1+R2)
Voltage divider: (R2/(R1+R2))*Vin = Vout
Currentdivider: (R2/(R2+R1))*Is = I1
Watts/power = ((V^2)/R) = VI = (I^2)(R)
Analog: deals with infinite values, circuits usually Digital: Finite, discrete, logic
gates,7 seg display

CMOS: NMOS and PMOS in series

NOR: NMOS in parallel, PMOS in series

NAND: PMOS in parallel, NMOS in series

P channel(current carried by holes) vs N channel(current carried by electrons)

Personal:
Salary: $23-24
Tell me about yourself:

I am a junior at UC Davis, my major is electrical engineering, I am a triplet, I

am currently working in two labs: the cyber human physical systems lab and
the Microwave Microsystems Laboratory. Born in Mountain View, grew up
there love it there. I am eager to work in a professional environment on real
world projects. Not just in a university environment but I want to grow and
move forward

What is your greatest achievement?

Was finding my passion, before working in a lab, learning was dull and it
seemed pointless, routine, but when I got an opportunity with professor pham
in the microwave and microsystems lab, I was able to apply the knowledge
that I learned to real world applications and this really excited me. I was
learning in order to apply my knowledge instead of learning to get a grade. It
was a challenge finding this drive expecially at first when my mother wanted
me to become a computer programmer, but I hated it, so I swiched majors
based on what I liked to do, more hands on applications

What was a challenge in your project group and how did you overcome it?

Biggest challenge was organization, understanding and passion. Not

everyone has learned coding before and at first everyone tried to teach
themselves at home which wasnt effective at all. And no one really took the
time out of there busy schedules to progress effectively with the project. We
finally came together and worked in groups to help teach each other parts of
the code that we understood. It was a good learning experience and it
showed that working as a team is always better than working as an individual
especially for the larger projects. So I learned the importance of teamwork
and the motivation from passion. We learn to build passion as we create,
develop, and move forward with our projects. When we meet certain goals, it
fuels our drive to reach larger goals.

Resume details?

UAV Lab
o Drone or UAV to dance with a human
o Started the end of february
o Using a kinect to track human movement and it moves according to
these gestures
o Coded in C sharp, right hand moves up the UAV will spin, track side to
side movement

o Remapping Sebastian Brandes open source code

o Building a UAV, soldering, 3D printing
o Aerospace aspect Drones have potential
Microsystems and Microwave lab
o Since January
o Probe microchips, test if chips are performing correctly, mostly Power
Amplifiers
o Specifically, RF hardware: signal generator, attenuator, amplifier
o Working on an envelope tracking system: currently learning all the
basics
o Machine shop training: lathes, drill presses, mills
o Attend meetings every Monday: Experience in professional
environment
o PCB layout design to mount microchips for probing
Noise Reduction System:
o Simulating circuits and prototyping circuits
o preemphasis used to filter out high frequency noise and retain low
frequency input signal by amplifying original makebandpass to cut
noise, deemphasis used to bring back original signal without noise
Real Time Data Acquisition:
o Matlab Project
o Microcontroller (coding in Javascript) , Servo motor
o Two speakers on two sides to sense the audio of a clap signal,
depending on amplitude of the signal it tells how far the hand is and it
orientates the servo motor arm in that direction
o Soldered own microphones: audio input, resistors,
Die Counter:
o Registers( multiple flip flops storing more bits), digital components,
flip-flops + latches (data storage, setting a state based on input)

Why do you want to work for ssl?

I always grew up next to Nasa visiting from time to time, and space seems
like such an adventure to me and it is a part of life that I want to explore, this
internship and exposure seems like a good opportunity to do that
John Celli : president
I have had experience at a university professional environment and want to
progress and experience the real world company environment
Very active members in supporting charities and organizations, a great
company helping great causes
Values: Act with Integrity, Do It right, Learn, Apply, Improve, Make the
Company Stronger
RF oriented and space oriented
Looks like you guys really reach out to college students: allowing interns to
feel as though they are actually contributing to real world projects

How do you handle difficult situations?

I step back, take a deep breath and think of the best possible way to
approach the situation
If I cant figure it out, I may walk away cool down and maybe after some rest I
will think of a better approach

What can you contribute to our company?

Jeff Larson:

Exposure to lab equipment, punctuality, solving a problem in the

cleanest most effective way, not only functional but clean, presentable
Experience, knowledge, motivation, passion
