General Notes for Concrete Drawings
1. User guidance
1.1 Scope
This standard provides notes to be used for the General Notes for
Concrete Drawings. Notes should be modified as required to satisfy
project specific information.
1.2 Applicability
This standard applies to Front-End-Loading (FEL), production
engineering/design, construction, and procurement. The general
notes are intended to supplement and emphasize drawing information
and specifications. They should be used to assure that special design
requirements and site specific information are understood and readily
available to construction personnel.
1.2 Benefits
This standard provides an inclusive and consistent set of notes for
supplementing design requirements, drawing information, and
specifications. They ensure that the requirements of the engineer of
record are satisfied and are clearly understood by the construction
contractors. They provide site specific information and special design
requirements for future project modifications. This information will
improve the quality of construction and help promote safe
construction practices.
2. Geotechnical
2.1 General
2.1.1 The design of foundations is based on the Geotechnical
Investigation Report ________.
2.1.2 Depth of frost penetration is ________.
2.1.3 Soil information
Weight of soil _____.
Surcharge load_____. (Walls)
Active and passive soil coefficients Ka___ and Kp _____.
2.1.4 Slab design is based on a modulus of sub-grade reaction of
k=_____ pci .
2.2 Footings
2.2.1 The design bearing value of the soil is__________ pounds per
square foot. If unusual soil conditions are encountered, the

2.3 Piles
2.3.1 Timber Piles shall be treated. They shall be driven to _____
tons capacity and are to be in accordance with SB18U.
2.3.2 Concrete Filled Thin Shell Piles shall be driven to _______ tons
capacity and are to be in accordance with SB18U.
2.3.3 Steel Pipe Piles (size and schedule) shall be driven to _______
tons capacity and are to be in accordance with SB18U.
2.3.4 Steel H Piles (size and weight) shall be driven to _____ tons
capacity and are to be in accordance with SB18U.
2.3.5 Prestressed Concrete Piles shall be driven to _____ tons
capacity and are to be in accordance with SB18U.
Note: Notes shall include any pertinent information from the geotechnical
report such as driving criteria, minimum tip elevation, maximum tip
elevation, etc.
2.4 Backfill
Backfill under floor slabs shall be test controlled compacted fill in
accordance with SC5E (9/87) or the Geotechnical Investigation
Report shall be referenced.
3. Code requirements
3.1 Detailing and construction shall conform to The Building Code
Requirements for Reinforced Concrete ACI 318 - Date_____.
3.2 Forms, placing, testing, evaluating, acceptance, and finishing
shall be in accordance with Specifications for Structural Concrete for
Buildings ACI 301 Date _____.
3.3 Slabs on Grade shall be designed according to ACI 360 Date___.
3.4 Foundations shall be designed for earthquake loads with a peak
velocity and acceleration of Av = ____ and Aa = ____ according to
building code ____________.

4. Specifications
For detailed construction requirements see Specification No ____.
6. Reinforcing steel
6.1 Reinforcing steel shall be deformed high strength bars
conforming to ASTM A 615 Grade 60.
6.2 For concrete reinforcement, see SB4U (12/99).
6.3 For all splices and embedment lengths in reinforcement,
see drawing.
6.4 For reinforcement around floor and wall openings,
see B17L (3/98).
6.5 Welded splices shall not be allowed for ASTM A615. If welded
splices are to be used, reinforcement shall conform to ASTM A706.
When welding ASTM A706 reinforcement is required, epoxy coated
or zinc coated bars shall not be permitted.

8.2 Floor Elevations: The elevation of the high point of the floor is
noted on the drawings as (HP Fin Fl _____).
9. Shoring
All free-standing walls shall be backfilled and shored according to the
direction of the Engineer of Record. The sequence for backfilling may
depend on construction requirements, concrete strength, surcharge
loads, deflection of the wall, etc.
