for two weeks after suffering a groin strain during Barca's 1-1 draw at home to Atletico Madrid, while Umtiti
has been out for a similar length of time with a ligament
injury in his left knee. (IANS)

Gautam Gambhir during a practice session ahead of the third Test match
in Indore on Friday. (PTI)

INDORE: The series already in their pocket and

the number one ranking cemented, a dominant India
go into the third Test
against New Zealand here
on Saturday, aiming yet another clean sweep of a Test
rubber at home.
India have already taken
an unassailable 2-0 lead in
the three-Test series but
Kohli confirmed that the
team was not going to experiment with a make shift
opener and instead give
Gautam Gambhir a chance
to resurrect his career after
two years.
The hosts had blanked
Australia 4-0 in 2012-13 and
the West Indies in the next
season. New Zealand, who
have competed well in
phases against the rampaging home team so far, have
an enviable task of stopping the Virat Kohli-led side
from notching up their 12th
win at home from 14 encounters. The Kiwis would
hope that captain Kane Williamson, who missed the
second game due to illness,
regains full fitness to lead
them for one last-ditch effort to score a rare victory
on the Indian soil.
Williamson batted in the
nets on Thursday and
bowling coach Shane Jurgensen said the signs were

positive. Williamson is easily their most accomplished

batsman to negate the twin
threat of Ravichandran
Ashwin and Ravindra
Jadeja as he showed in the
lost cause (by 197 runs) in
the series opener in Kanpur,
making 75 and 25.
In Williamson's absence
the Kiwis folded up without much of a fight for totals of 204 and 197 at the
Eden in Kolkata. His return
is very important especially
with the other top batsman
in the ranks, Ross Taylor
struggling for runs.
New Zealand spinners
too have been unable to exert sustained pressure on
the Indian batsmen after the
new ball bowlers make
early inroads and this too
has had a bearing on the
series.Tom Latham and
Luke Ronchi have shown
the way to some extent in
batting against the Indian
spin-oriented attack, but
others need to step up.
India would certainly
miss the services of Bhuvneshwar Kumar who is out
with a back injury after
bowling sustained spells
and grabbing a five-wicket
haul in the first innings at
Kolkata.
Umesh who played in
the first game, is expected
to be back to lend support

to Shami who bowled well

in Kolkata even when his
daughter was in the ICU of
a local hospital.
The commitment and
skills with the old ball
shown by Shami had been
exemplary.
The forecast has said
there is no threat of heavy
rains coming in and spoiling the show although light
showers have been forecast
for the last two days of the
game. Match hosts, Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association, are upbeat in conducting the match successfully.

Murray, Ferrer Rangdajied crush Nangkiew 4-0

through to semis
BEIJING: Andy Murray
beat Davis Cup teammate
Kyle Edmund and David
Ferrer dispatched German
youngster
Alexander
Zverev as experience won
out over youth in the China
Open quarter-finals on Friday.
The three-time Grand
Slam champion was forced
into a tense 20-point tie
break in the first set by his
21-year-old compatriot, finally clinching it with a
forehand passing shot.
But Edmund - who upset 18th-ranked Roberto
Bautista Agut in the second round - was unable to
hold his serve in the second, conceding the match
7-6 (11/9), 6-2.

Zverev, 19, was looking

to cap a breakout season
with a second title in Beijing, but was unable to
capitalise on his first set
lead as he was overpowered by Ferrer 6-7 (4/7), 61, 7-5.
The German upset the
Swiss world number three
Stan Wawrinka to win his
maiden ATP title at St. Petersburg in September, having downed number nine
Tomas Berdych in the
semis.
In Beijing he beat 10thranked Austrian Dominic
Thiem in the first round,
making him the first teenager to defeat three top 10
players in a row since Boris
Becker in 1986. (Reuters)

SHILLONG: Rangdajied
masterclass display saw
them cruising past Nangkiew Irat 4-0, and register
their 7th win in the Shillong
Premier League played at J
N Stadium on Friday.
Nangkiew were left chasing shadows in the green
turf of their own half as they
had no answer to Rangdajieds attacking brilliance.
In the first half of the
match, Rangdajied raced to
score three goals, the first
from Nadong Bhutia in the
18th minute from a beautiful
cross, and just four minutes
later, a sharp header from Atingnyek Kongyek from a
well-directed corner doubled the lead.
In the 34th minute Bansharai Sun made Nangkiews
chances more slim by scoring the third goal of the

Premier League second leg match at the J N stadium, Polo on Friday.
match, and Rangdajied went
on to break with a thumping
lead of three goals.
There was no let up after
the break, Rangdajied continued their flow of attack,
however this time Nangkiew
were more alert and stood
firm in their back yard and

were successful in resisting

Rangdajieds threat.
However in the 81 st
minute, James Moga scored
the fourth goal for Rangdajied and sealed the match.
With this win, Rangdajied dethrones Shillong Lajong and claims the top

spot, with 21 points. Meanwhile, Shillong Lajong FC

will take on Meghalaya Police on Saturday in the SPL
encounter at the J N Stadium at 3pm. The last time
the two teams met was on
September 15 where Lajong
emerged winners 1-0.

NEW DELHI: Cracking the

whip on a "defiant BCCI"
for not implementing the
Justice R M Lodha Committee directions, Supreme
Court on Friday restrained
the cash-rich cricket body
from disbursing funds to
state bodies any further till
they filed affidavits promising to abide by the panel's recommendations in
"letter and spirit".
The apex court directed

its President Anurag Thakur

to explain by filing "personal
affidavit", the allegation that
he had asked the ICC in a
communication to say that
implementation of the apex
court-ordered
reforms
would amount to govermental interference and lead to
BCCI's disqualification from
international cricket.
Long-standing cricket
administrator Ratnakar
Shetty, currently BCCI's

General Manager (cricket

operation), was also directed by the top court to
come clear by placing on affidavit copies of the document and BCCI resolution
that authorised him to file affidavits on its behalf before
the Lodha panel, which had
passed a slew of directions
for massive restructuring of
cricket bodies in the country.
Shetty was asked to file
a personal affidavit enclos-

ing the resolution which

authorised him to make
statements relating to the
response made in pursuance to Lodha report.
In a short interim order
which allayed all apprehensions about any hindrance
to the domestic criketing
season, a bench headed by
Chief Justice T S Thakur also
directed the 12 state associations to freeze the amounts
received by them from BCCI

through the September 30

Special General Body Meeting till they agreed to the
reform measures.
It also made it clear that
the amount of Rs 16.72 crore
each disbursed to 13 state
cricket associations should
not be spent till they filed
affidavits and resolutions
before the Lodha panel and
the apex court that they
would implement the directions in letter and spirit for

reforms.
It warned those state
cricket associations, which
have received the funds
but failed to adopt a resolution and undertaking
under affidavit before the
Lodha Panel and the apex
court to abide by directions for reforms, that they
would be forbidden from
spending the funds which
should be kept in fixed deposits. (PTI)

DHAKA: Paceman Jake Ball

claimed five wickets on debut after Ben Stokes scored
his maiden century as England came from behind to
snatch a 21-run win over
Bangladesh in the first oneday international in Dhaka
on Friday.
Stokes hit 101 off 100
balls to guide England to
309-8 but it seemed not
good enough as opener Imrul Kayes struck a century
and shared a 118-run partnership with Shakib Al
Hasan to take Bangladesh
tantalisingly close to a
heroic win.

With Bangladesh needing 39 off 51 balls, Ball, who

finished with 5-51 runs, removed Shakib for 79 and
then bowled young Mosaddek Hossain off the next ball
to help England claw their
way back.
Bangladesh lost all hope
when leg-spinner Adil
Rashid, who also played a
big part in the visitors' win
with 4-49, dragged Kayes
out of his crease off a wide
ball for England skipper Jos
Buttler to complete the
stumping.
Kayes departed for 112
after facing 119 balls with

Bangladesh still needing 30

runs from six overs. Bangladesh lost their last six
wickets for just 17 runs to
be dismissed for 288 in 47.5
overs, handing England a 10 lead in three-match series.
He paired with Shakib
after Ball and Rashid landed some early blows to
leave Bangladesh on 153-4.
Stokes and Buttler, who
scored 63 off 38 balls, earlier set up England's total as
the visitors recovered from
63-4 to post a competitive
score after electing to bat
first at the Sher-e-Bangla
National Stadium. (AFP)
