Task description
This ISAT task is to control a sequence starting conveyer belt train driven by three
motors, controlled with a PLC. The total time allocated for the ISAT session is
SEVEN (7) hours. The assessment team must decide on how this time is accounted
for over the year to complete the various tasks listed in the ISAT. Lecturers must
ensure authenticity and safe record keeping of each students work until the final
assessment.

SECTION 2: INSTRUCTIONS TO LECTURERS

1.

Ensure that the students understand the assessment criteria with respect to the
task.

2.

Ensure that the students understand the competence descriptors of the

assessment rubrics.

3.

The ISAT assesses the various skills attained in the three (3) vocational
subjects.

4.

INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTS must be given to each student and sufficiently

in advance for preparation and fulfilment of the ISAT task.

5.

Each lecturer is to ensure that during the year students have sufficient time to
practice and master the skills and knowledge required to complete the ISAT.

6.

An assessment of competent will only be achieved if the students project is

functional. However, it must be noted that the student is to be given additional
attempts (max of 3, if required). Allow the student to fault find in order to achieve
a functional project within the period allocated for the completion of the task.

7.

In order to maintain standardisation and avoid subjectivity it is important that

lecturers abide by the level descriptors given in the marking rubrics for a
particular criterion when awarding a score using the assessment tool.

8.

Lecturers must assess the project in stages to ensure that valid and authentic
assessment that measures the skills, knowledge, attitude and values (SKAV)
required by the task takes place.

9.

The ISAT forms part of the students promotion mark and therefore must be
conducted under examination conditions in a structured environment.

10.

Lecturers to clear or reformat the PLC unit before the next student up loads
his/her programme to start with his/her assessment.

11.

Ensure that safety practices are emphasised and adhered to, at all times.
Specify the type of distribution board used.

12.

Ensure that all evidence produced in sub tasks is filed in student ISAT Portfolio
of Evidence.

13.

Carefully note the requirements of the Assessment Tools provided in SECTION

3.

14.

Student performance in the ISAT must conclude with a record of the students
performance as provided for in SECTION 4.

INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTS

This is a practical application task that tests your ability to apply the knowledge and skills
acquired in the core subjects of the Electrical Infrastructure Construction programme. The
work required of you in this Integrated Summative Assessment Task (ISAT) is an important
and compulsory component of your studies.
1. You are required to:
1.1

Study the task carefully.

1.2

Note the time allocations per task.

1.3

Note the submission dates.

1.4

Pay careful attention to the mark allocated per section and for the total.

1.5

Study carefully the resources required.

1.6

Note the elements of the Assessment Tool that will be used to evaluate your
performance in each sub-task. This is to ensure that you prepare sufficiently for
the conduct of the ISAT.

2. Description of the task

You are required to design an electrical circuit that will have the following operation:

Motor 1 has to start before motor 2, and motor 2 must start before motor 3.

Allow for a time delay of 5 seconds before the starting of each motor.

If motor 3 stops for any reason, the other two motors must also stop.

If motor 2 stops, then motor 1 must also stop but motor 3 must continue to run.
If motor 1 stops, the other two motors must continue to run.

Step-one: Use a computer and design the ladder circuit for the PLC. Use the simulation
application on the developed program to check whether your circuit operates
or not.
Step-two: Draw an electrical circuit to connect the motors.
The relays and motors are operating on 24V supply.
Step-three: Connect all components and be careful of loose connections.
Step-four: Upload the PLC program from the computer to the PLC unit.
Step-five: Switch on the supply and test-run your sequence starter.

3. Instructions for the task

SUB-TASK 1: DEVELOP THE LADDER LOGIC PROGRAM (4 hrs - 40 marks)
1.

Use FIGURE 1 as reference and mark off on the drawing which is motor 1, motor
2 and motor 3.

2.

Mount the relays on the DIN rails to allow you to connect the coils of the relays to
the PLC and the contacts to the motors.

3.

With this information start to develop your ladder logic circuit. [If a Siemens S7200 series PLC is used then the circuit can be developed with ICONS and
translated to ladder logic.].

4.

Select the correct number of inputs and name them according to your
observations from the panel.

5.

Select the correct symbols to design a ladder logic circuit.

6.

Select the correct number of outputs and name them accordingly.

7.

Number the terminal block correctly.

8.

Make use of the timers in the PLC to allow the 5 second delay.

9.

Run the simulation application to check whether your circuit operates.

10.

Save the program on the computer for later use.

11.

Notify the assessor on completion of subtask.

SUB-TASK 2: DRAW THE ELECTRICAL WIRING CIRCUIT DIAGRAM (1 hr- 20 marks)

1.

With the assistance of the sketch and the model, draw a circuit diagram for the
wiring of the relay and motor circuits to be connected to the PLC.

2.

Note: evidence of this sub-task will be a completed wiring diagram.

SUB-TASK 3: WIRING OF 3 MOTORS IN SEQUENCE (1hr - 20 marks)

1.

Armed with the correct tools and wires, use your circuit diagram, and connect all
the relays and motor circuit to the PLC.

2.

Mount all components on the DIN rails.

3.

Notify the assessor on completion of sub-task.

2012 2014

SUB-TASK 4: INSTALL THE PROGRAMME ON A PLC UNIT (1/2 hr - 10 marks)

1.

Retrieve your computer aided program [ladder logic circuit] and upload it from the
computer to the PLC.

2.

Before you switch the PLC on check through your work to verify if you are
satisfied with the quality of your work.

3.

Notify the assessor on completion of sub-task.

SUB-TASK 5: TESTING AND COMMISSIONING (1/2 hr - 10 marks)

1.

Is the wiring up to standard?

2.

Are there no loose connections?

3.

Are you satisfied with your performance?

4.

Switch on and test run

5.

If your motors start in sequence according to the above instructions then the final
assessment can take place.
