Homework # 7

Relative Motion of Rigid Bodies

Consider the depicted kinematic mechanism. Crank OB (length 0.5 m) rotates anticlockwise about
point O with constant angular velocity = 10 rad/s. Block B at the end of the crank can slide in
the slotted arm AC (length 1 m), which determines the motion of point C. The horizontal distance
between points O and A is 0.25 m.

a) Calculate the velocity at point C for the given time instant (in magnitude and direction).
b) Draw the velocity diagram and compare the velocity of point C (in magnitude and direction)
with the result found in a).
c) Calculate the coriolis acceleration (in magnitude and direction).
d) Draw the acceleration diagram and find the acceleration of point C (in magnitude and direction).
Given: OA = 0.25 m, OB = 0.50 m, = 10 rad/s, = 120 .
