Foreword Skip this if you want

Welcome. Congrats on obtaining your first Kindle and joining the magical
world of e-book reading.
While Amazon designed the Kindle to be a truly seamless process, it is
unfortunately not available worldwide. This poses some problems and
restriction if you dont happen to be a user in countries where the Kindle
is officially sold.
This guide is hence created to help those restrictions, so everyone can
enjoy the brilliance of e-book reading.
Wed greatly encourage that you read the entire guide to enjoy the full
Kindle experience. Alternatively, you may choose to view this short video
guide.
If you are interested in buying a kindle in Singapore, please head over to
our website. If not, please enjoy the guide regardless.

1. Setting up your Amazon account (on browser)

1.1. Do not buy books directly from the Kindle device. Always purchase
from browser
When getting Amazon books to your Kindle device:
1) DO NOT purchase books directly from the Kindle device
Always purchase books from your Amazon account on a browser - books purchased on
your Amazon account will sync to your Kindle.
2) Always log on the your Amazon account (on www.amazon.com) using incognito/private
browsing mode

1.2. Creating your Amazon account

At this stage you do not need your Kindle device yet. All these steps should be done on a
computer you will link the account to the Kindle device later.
Go to www.amazon.com
Under Your Account tab in the right corner, click New customer? Start here.
Fill in your details and password

1.3. First of all, change your country of origin.

- Under your account, click manage your Manage Your Content and Devices
- Choose the Settings Tab on the most right.
- Click on Country Settings option
- Choose Change Country
At this point Amazon will request that you enter your US address.
Amazon will accept any address as long as the State and Postal Code matches.
Google any random US postal code or go http://www.findazip.com/, enter your matching
postal code/state and have fun
conjuring up other fictional
details.

2. Three methods to purchase books from Amazon

Important to note:
- DO NOT purchase books directly from your Kindle device. Always buy them
from the Amazon website on a computer using the following methods.
- When buying books, always go on to Amazon.com in incognito mode (for
Chrome) or private browsing (for Firefox).
There are essentially 3 methods you can use to buy books from Amazon. Amazon occasionally
does random checks for non US users (through determining the origin of credit card), flags it,
and prohibits future purchases.
The difference between the methods is how safe and unlikely it is to be noticed by Amazon.
The guide will begin with the safest method, followed by the less safe methods. All methods
can be used even with a local credit card!
My recommendation is to use at least method two (Gift card method) to prevent any
complication. It is not worth it to save a few minutes of your time only to get your account
flagged.

2.1. ONE: 100% Secure - VPN plus Gift card

Install VPN
Install a free VPN such as HotSpotShield or HideMyAss (you can also google other free ones)
which route you through a US IP. It essentially masks your IP as a US based one
Switch on your VPN before switching on your browser.
Buy Gift Card
On Black Navigation Bar>Gift Card
In same page, under Instant Delivery>E-mail.
Buy a gift card with your local credit card and email the gift card to yourself.
Redeem Gift Card
On White Navigation Bar>Redeem
Here, apply the gift card code that you have purchased and sent to your own email. Go to your
account>

Go to your account>Manage Payment Options and DELETE ALL CREDIT CARD INFO that you
have associated with Amazon. You can add back the credit card info when you are ready to
make your next purchase.
Purchase books! YAY!
At the page of the book you want, click 'buy now with 1-click', 'deliver to your Kindle'. If you
choose to wirelessly send it to your Kindle, you should receive the book in less than a minute.
You can also choose to download the file and transfer it to your Kindle using USB.
The price of the book will be deducted from your Amazon gift balance.
When buying the book, if asked for the billing address, use any US address, such as the one you
entered earlier in country of origin.
Switch off the VPN when done purchasing the book. Switch it on again whenever you need to
access Amazon.
**If you buy books regularly, its a good idea to get a gift card of large value (e.g. $50 or $100)
at one go so you dont have to repeatedly add and delete your credit card details.

2.2. TWO: 90% Secure - Gift card method

The main difference between this and the earlier method is the absence of using VPN. This
should be 90% safe. Most users go for this method.
Buy Gift Card
On Black Navigation Bar>Gift Card
In same page, under Instant Delivery>E-mail.
Buy a gift card with your local credit card and email the gift card to yourself.
Redeem Gift Card
On White Navigation Bar>Redeem
Here, apply the gift card code that you have purchased and sent to your own email.

*If you buy books regularly, its a good idea to get a gift card of large value (e.g. $50 or $100)
at one go so you dont have to repeatedly add and delete your credit card details.

2.3. Three: No Guarantees - Direct purchase method

Go to Your Account> 1-Click Settings
Click edit to add a payment method for your address
Your account is now linked to your credit card
Buying books is now as simple as find the book you want and click buy with 1 click and
choosing to send to your device.
It bears repeating that this method is highly NOT RECOMMENDED. While it is extremely
convenient, there are a number of known users who got flagged. Proceed at your own peril.

3. Registering account to your device and others

3.1. Now that you set up your Amazon account, youll need to link it to
your amazon device. Any books on your Amazon account will
automatically sync to your Kindle.
-

Connect your Kindle to your Wi-Fi network

From home screen>Menu>Settings>Registration
Either log in to your account created in steps earlier

3.2. Refunding your accidental purchase

Books you purchase from the Kindle Store are eligible for return and refund if we receive your
request within seven days of the date of purchase. Once a refund is issued, you'll no longer
have access to the book. To request a refund and return, visit Manage Your Kindle, click the
actions tab for the title you'd like to return, and select "Return for refund."

3.3. Magazine Subscriptions

You will be able to subscribe to Amazons magazines provided you have linked you credit card
details to your account i.e. you must be using method 2.2.
Subscriptions can easily be cancelled under Manage Your Kindle > Subscription Settings

4.Downloading books from other sources

Free library
The following websites are public libraries to download free eBooks.
Simply choose a title you like and download them in Mobi or Awz format.
http://www.gutenberg.org/
http://manybooks.net/

Torrents
Essentially, other than purchasing books from Amazon, E-books can also be downloaded using
torrents.
For the uninitiated, there are two parts to downloading files using Torrent.
First of all, you will need a Torrent Client software that will handle the downloading. There
are tons of Torrent Clients out there. uTorrent is recommended.
After installing the Client, you will need to find Torrent seeds, which are pathways to
download the files people put up for downloading.
You can do a simple Google search for the torrent seeds.
Essentially the steps boil down to (1) install torrent client, (2) find torrent file of book you
want to download and (3) open torrent file and your torrent client will download the book.

4.1. Compatible e-books format

The popular public formats Kindle is compatible with are MOBI and PDF. It is unfortunately
incompatible with Epub.
Try finding MOBI versions of books when downloading e-books from any sources. If it is
unavailable, you can download the Epub version and convert to MOBI using Calibre.
After installing Calibre, import your ePub book into it and right click to convert the format.

4.2. Managing your eBook collection/library

As Amazon doesnt provide any desktop application, you would need a third party application
to manage your non-Amazon books library.
For this purpose, please download Calibre, an amazing open-source software that helps you
manage your library, download news websites into ebooks, convert ebook formats, and send
books to your Kindle wirelessly. Be sure to explore its functions to get the most out of it.

4.3. Transferring books to your Kindle

Books can be transferred to Kindle through simple drag and drop
Connect your Kindle to your PC and drop your e-books into the documents folder

5.Warranty Please Read

It is important to do two things when you first receive your Kindle to facilitate the return
should it be necessary:
1) Register your Kindle to an Amazon account as Amazon will look up the device by pulling
up your account
2) Keep your original box so as to quote the serial number if required
Should any hardware problems surface on your Kindle, please follow the warranty guide
on how to send it back to Amazon for exchange.
