Problem Set 1: Problem 6
Galaxy 1:
Smooth
Completely Round
No merging or odd features

Galaxy Zoo
classifications
are inside the
text boxes.

I made the above choices because there are no discernible features

and the galaxy is very round in shape. For the same reasons, I
classify this galaxy as an E0 elliptical galaxy.

Galaxy 2:
Disk
No Bar
Spiral
Medium Wound
3 arms
Obvious Bulge
No merging or odd features
This galaxy very clearly has 3 spiral arms with no evidence of a bar.
The bulge is quite distinguishable and the arms are not very tightly
wound. Because of this, I classify this as an Sb spiral galaxy.
Galaxy 3:
Disk
No Bar
Spiral
Tightly Wound
3 arms
Obvious Bulge
No merging or odd features
This galaxy also has 3 spiral arms with no bar. The bulge is obvious
and the arms are tightly wound. Because of this, I classify this as an
Sa spiral galaxy.

Galaxy 4:
Smooth
In Between Roundness
No merging or odd features
The lack of features shows that this is an elliptical galaxy. Because
it is more elliptical than round, I classify this as an E4 galaxy.

Galaxy 5:
Smooth
Completely Round
No merging or odd features
The lack of features shows that this is also an elliptical galaxy. This
galaxy is rounder than the previous one, but still not perfectly round,
so I will classify this as an E1 galaxy.

Galaxy 6:
Disk
No Bar
Spiral
Medium Wound
2 arms
Obvious Bulge
Merging and Tidal Debris
This image shows the collision of 2 spiral galaxies. The larger of the
two has 2 arms and a defined bulge. It is also displaying a tail of
tidal debris caused by the other galaxy. Because the bulge is defined
and the arms are not tightly wound, this is an Sb galaxy.

Galaxy 7:
Disk
No Bar
Spiral
Tightly Wound
4 arms
Obvious Bulge
No merging or odd features
This spiral galaxy has 4 tightly wound arms and a small but definite
bulge. Because I can still see between the spiral arms, I also call
this an Sb galaxy.

Galaxy 8:
Smooth
Cigar Shaped
No merging or odd features
The lack of features shows that this is an elliptical galaxy. Because
it is very elliptical, I classify this as an E7 galaxy.

Galaxy 9:
Disk
Bar
Spiral
Medium Wound
2 arms
Obvious Bulge
No merging or odd features
This spiral galaxy has 2 arms and a small but definite bulge.
Because it has a bar and I can still see between the spiral arms, I
call this an SBb galaxy.

Galaxy 10:
Disk
No Bar
Spiral
Medium Wound
2 arms
Obvious Bulge
Merging and Tidal Debris
This image shows the collision of 2 spiral galaxies. The larger of
the two has 2 arms and a defined bulge. It is also displaying a tail
of tidal debris caused by the other galaxy. Because the bulge is
defined and the arms are not tightly wound, this is an Sb galaxy.
