Ithasbecomeespeciallyrelevantintheyearssincethe2008financialcrisis,whichwasblamedontheshortterm

TheRoyalSwedishAcademyofSciencespublishedapaperoncontracttheoryandtheworkthatwonHartand
Holmstromtheirprizethisyear.
Hereisaquickbreakdownofthekeyideas:
1.Contracttheoryhasitsrootsinthe1700s,whenAdamSmitharguedthatsharecroppingcontractsdidnot
incentivisetenantstoimprovetheland.Thetheorywasrevisitedinthe1930swhenAmericanbusiness
executiveChesterBarnardconsideredhowtogetemployeestoputmoreeffortintotheirworkinbig
companies.Barnardisconsideredthepioneeringauthorrelatedtomanagementtheoryandorganisational
studies.
2.Thetheorylooksatthedifficultyoftyingpaytoperformance.AcompanymightpayaCEObasedonan
increaseinstockmarketvalue,butthiscouldendupbeingjustluck.Inthelate1970sandearly'80s,work
