SmartPlant 2007 and Oracle Upgrades

Oracle / SPI Requirements

Prior to version 2007 SPI supported a variety of Oracle character sets
Oracle databases instances:
Required:
One server per oracle character set or

The client must relate to one character set.

One instance per character set and SPI software patch

Backup and retrieval should always be to the same settings as above!
Could relate to multiple Oracle servers when working with end users data

Oracle / SPI Requirements

SPI 2007 now supports one Oracle character set.
Recommended
National Charter Set: AL16UTF16
Local Character Set: AL32UTF8
Oracle databases instances with one character set
Required:
One instance per software patch
Backup and retrieval should always be to the same settings

Oracle / SPI Requirements

SPI 2007 now supports Oracle on versions:
Version 9 & version 10
Version 8 has been retired

Oracle Version 9:
Still only supports 1 character set per server/client machine

Oracle Version 10:

More flexibility - supports more than one character set per server/client
Enterprise is now related to the new character for all products.
PDS can be RIS unloaded and placed in a new character set instance.
The Server can support more than just SmartPlant product.
Limitation for SPI is now software patch version on instance.

Oracle / SPI Upgrade Requirements

Upgrading to version 2007 considerations:
Will require more than one database instance to upgrade.
Due to project requirements, to only upgrade one of many project on a
particularly instance may increase the number of oracle instances required.
If you have a Watcom licenses you may find this a simpler way to upgrade
projects.

Oracle / SPI Upgrade Requirements

Upgrading to version 2007 bullet points for using Oracle:
For one domain or to test:
Restore into new oracle Instance at the same character set.
Run check db:
Fix issues as normal
Check product guide for upgrade requirements
Export unit of measure from SPI from save to external file.
Load version 2007 software at the latest service pack
Open administrator and upgrade administrator and project.
Run check db & fix issues
Changing character set:
Run utility to modify data character set prior to changing instance
Initialise into new instance
TO BE CHECKED WITH SUPPORT PRIOR TO UPGRADE.

Upgrading Oracle to version 2007, bullet points for using Watcom:
Note: Saving to Watcom does not take the changes log table.
This is the largest table in the database and power builder cannot cope
with back-up and restore of this table.
However, there are other means to save and restore this table. Contact support if
you need to take this tables contents forward using Watcom.
