Ball State public access, faculty or staff machine, both desktop and laptop.

Enabling or Installing .NET

Windows 7 Users
If your machine is running Windows 7, you must enable .NET features.

Select Turn Windows Features On or Off

Expand the Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5.1 Option

Check both of the folders in this option and click OK to close out of the
options.

Restart your machine before installing the software.

SP1 is installed. Windows 8 Users

In Control Panel, choose Programs and Features, choose Turn
Windows features on or of, and then select the .NET Framework
3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0) check box.
Mac Users
You will need to install Windows Boot Camp, Parallels or a similar software
program to run ArcGIS Desktop 10.3.1 on your machine

Accessing the Installation Files

1. Make sure you are on campus and on the BSU network (wirelessly
connected either as BSU Guest or BSU Secure)
2. If you have to install from off campus, you will need to connect to the BSU
Network via VPN.
a. Click on the following link: \\libgis\installs\ArcGIS Desktop
10.3.1\desktop
b. Or you can open Windows Explorer and type
\\libgis\installs\ArcGIS Desktop 10.3.1\desktop in to the address bar and hit
enter
3. You will need to enter your username and password when prompted
a. Username: bsu\ bsuid replacing bsuid with your bsu username.
b. Password: your bsu password

Removing Previous Versions of ArcGIS

ArcGIS 10.3.1 is an upgradeable software update. If you are currently
running ArcGIS Desktop 10.1 or higher you dont need to remove anything
before installing ArcGIS Desktop 10.3.1
If you are running a version prior to 10.1, you will need to run the
103UninstallUtility.exe to remove them.
1. Click on the UninstallUtility folder (image below), then the 103 1U n install

Installing 10.3.1
1. Open the ArcGIS_Desktop_10.3.1 folder and click on setup.exe.

3. Accept the License Agreement and choose a complete installation on
the next window.

4. Accept all the default locations and keep clicking next and install until the
program begins to install. Installation could take an hour. Click Finish
on window that tells you Desktop has been successfully installed.

Choosing the Correct License Manager

If you have installed ArcGIS10.3.1 with no previous version of ArcGIS on
your machine, you should be directly taken to the ArcGIS Administrator Wizard
once the software installation has completed. If this window doesnt
automatically pop up you can open it from start>All
Programs>ArcGIS>ArcGIS Administrator and then click on the
Desktop folder in the left panel. (Image below)

licenses and their expiration dates in the panel on the right.

Borrowing a License from the License Manager to

Allow for No Network or Coverage Use while
Disconnected from the License Server
Instead of the ESRI Site License Coordinator creating a single-use license file
for every faculty laptop, end users can now borrow a license directly from
the License Manager. This will allow users access to the GIS software while not
on the BSU network and when there is no internet coverage. Licenses can be
borrowed for 365 days (or until the end of the annual contract, November
30th)
*** When borrowing a license, make sure that you are actually on a campus
network such as BSUSecure or BSUguest and not accessing the software via

the VPN. You will not be able to access the software while in the field if you
borrow the license while accessing the network via VPN**

Open the ArcGIS Administrator start>All Programs>ArcGIS>ArcGIS

Enabling Extensions in ArcGIS Desktop
Once your software has been installed and licensed, you should turn on
all the available extensions in ArcGIS Desktop.

Click Open to open a blank map on the window that pops up
On the Main Menu, click on Customize and Extensions to open the
Extension Manager

10.3.1 Setting up Relative Paths as the

Default for all Map Documents

Relative paths are essential for those who need to move from one machine
to another easier and with far few broken links. For public access and lab
computers this is very important.

1. In the Main Menu Click on Customize and ArcMap Options

2. In the ArcMap Options window turn on Make relative paths the

default for new map documents.
