A pictogram
also called a pictogramme, pictograph, or simply picto, and
also an 'icon, is an ideogram that conveys its meaning through
its pictorial resemblance to a physical object.

An ideogram
or ideograph is a graphical symbol that represents an idea.

A logogram
or logograph, is a single grapheme which represents a word or
a morpheme (a meaningful unit of language). This stands in
contrast to other writing systems, such as alphabets, where
each symbol (letter) primarily represents a sound or a
combination of sounds.

HISTORY OF GRAPHICS

Origin : this illustration by American founding father Benjamin Franklin was printed as a political cartoon well
before the existence of the modern-day poster, its function was similar.
Its message was that the American colonies must unite if they wish to successfully fight the British for
independence a bit of propaganda and a memorable image to mobilize it.

HISTORY OF GRAPHICS

Massimo Vignelli is considered by many as one of the most influential designers of the past century.
Vignelli endeavoured to condense large, busy ideas into more digestible, understandable formats through
design.
This is highly evident in his 1972 redesign of the New York City Subway Map whereby he chose an experimental,
abstracted design that was heavily debated but later proved incredibly effective.

HISTORY OF GRAPHICS

Origin: a motivational poster produced by the British government in 1939, meant to buoy civilian morale
amidst devastating German air raids on London
(it was never actually distributed, however, until being rediscovered in 2000).

HISTORY OF GRAPHICS

Max Miedinger was a Swiss typeface designer known for creating one of the most well known typefaces in the
world, Helvetica (or as it was formerly known, Neue Haas Grotesk).
Helvetica itself is a paragon of Swiss design clean, legible, flexible, and it had no sight of serifs anywhere, so
naturally it caught on pretty quickly.
Miedingers contribution to the development of Swiss design helped shape the movement in an immeasurable
way.
