vi Service Manual 83138-2-TC

Chapter 1. Introduction

Chapter 1. Introduction

The contents of this manual, as a whole, relate to the Raytheon Pathfinder radar series and
associated chartplotter displays. The manual is divided into several parts. This part covers General
matters, as detailed below. Other parts relate to (small groups of) specific Scanner Units, or Display
Units. Refer to the Master Table of Contents at the front of the manual for brief details of each of the
other parts. Further parts will be added to the manual as this family of products grows.
Note:
This Service Manual does not include information on the SL72 and SL74 radars. This is contained in
Document No. 83128.

Overview
Part 1, General deals with matters that are common to the whole family of products. It also provides
the initial fault diagnosis to decide if a problem lies in the Scanner Unit or in the Display unit of a
radar/chartplotter system.
Chapter 2: Deals with routine and occasional maintenance and includes an operational check
giving an indication of the general condition and performance of the radar and/or chartplotter
display. Details are given on how to obtain further assistance, should this ever be necessary and
how to record and report problems to Raytheon for analysis.
Chapter 3: Fault finding procedures utilising the built-in testing and diagnostics, flow charts and
monitoring points are given to help isolate problems to scanner unit or display unit level. The relevant
specific part can then be used for further fault finding.
Chapter 4: Gives details of the NMEA, SeaTalk and HSB interface data communications.
Appendix: Contains current Technical Update bulletins giving additional information not covered
elsewhere in the manual.

Chapter 2. Maintenance and Assistance

WARNING: The display unit and scanner unit contain high voltages. The equipment
should always be turned off, before removing covers. The scanner unit high voltages
can take up to 1 minute to decay. The CRT display unit high voltages can take up to
3 seconds to decay. The specialised service procedures detailed in this manual
should only be carried out by qualified service engineers.

2.1 Maintenance
EMC Servicing and Safety Guidelines

Raytheon equipment should be serviced by authorised Raytheon service engineers. They will
ensure that service procedures and replacement parts used will not adversly affect
performance. There are no user serviceable parts in any Raytheon product.

High voltages are generated in both the scanner and the display unit. Never handle cables/
connectors when power is being applied to the equipment.

Always report any EMC related problem to Raytheons Technical Support Department. We will
use any such information to improve our quality and standards.

Tools
No specialised tools are required for maintenance or service of these radars, within the scope of this
manual, with two exceptions:
If the radome scanner connector as fitted to the interunit cable is to be replaced, using the Radar
Cable Connector Kit, Part No. R126, then a special crimp tool is required. This is available from
Raytheon, Part No. T046.
Always use an insulated trimming tool when making adjustments to the CRT display,
Scan /PSU PCB. Dangerous high voltages exist inside the display.

Materials
Lubricants are not required during maintenance or service of this equipment, except for grease on
the scanner securing bolts. Generally, only fresh water should be used for cleaning and no sealants
should be necessary.
A 10m (light) inter-unit cable assembly, M92692 will allow testing of the radar when the radome
scanner has been removed from its normal location.

Routine Checks

For display units fitted with the internal chart reader, normally keep the door closed to prevent
water ingress into the chart holder compartment.

Wipe the display clean with a damp cloth.

Service Manual 83138-3-Ch2 3

Part 1
Chapter 2

This chapter provides information on routine and preventative maintenance. It includes an

operational check and details on how to obtain further assistance, should this become necessary.

Part 1
Chapter 2

Pathfinder Radar/Chartplotter Series

For CRT display units with tracker balls, ensure the ball is kept clean with fresh water and a damp
cloth.

Wash the exterior of the scanner unit with fresh water. In particular, on open array scanners, the
antenna should be kept clean.

Examine the cables for signs of damage, such as chafing, or cuts.

Check the cable connectors are firmly attached.

Make sure the scanner is attached securely to its mounting.

Once a year, remove, grease and re-fit the mounting bolts, or nuts securing the scanner.

Occasional Checks
Whenever the covers of the display or scanner are removed for service reasons, opportunity should
be taken to make the following checks, of the areas exposed, to ensure:

PCBs and sub-assemblies are securely mounted.

Connectors are secure and fully engaged, with no signs of corrosion on pin or socket contacts.

High voltage areas of the modulator and the magnetron lead and connector are free from dust
and dirt. Clean with a small brush or cloth if necessary. Do not use any solvents.

The drive belts and pulleys are free from dirt and grease.

CRT display units only. Two drain tubes are fitted to the Trackball assembly to prevent water
build-up. If the normal mounting position of the CRT face is more than 50 from the vertical, any
water will drain through the rear tube. If the angle is less than 50, the drain is via the front tube.
Check the condition of the drain tubes whenever they are exposed, during service dismantling. If
possible blow through the tubes to ensure they are clear.

Check inside the rear cover of the CRT display for a build-up of dirt along the lower edge. Clean
as necessary ensuring the small drain hole is clear.

Always examine the display and scanner unit seals for signs of damage or wear, before replacing
the covers. Replace the seal if necessary.

2.2 Operational Checks

At the conclusion of maintenance checks, or after the completion of a repair, or if the radar has been
re-installed on the vessel the following procedure should be carried out to give an assessment of the
general performance of the radar.
The checks cover all three LCD display variants, both CRT variants and all scanner units. Follow the
procedure for the particular display(s) in use. For dual display systems, first test the display (if any)
that is connected to the scanner unit, otherwise test the RC520. The second display should be
initially left switched off. Refer to additional checks below to check this display and the HSB.

Chapter 3. Initial Fault Finding

Chapter 3. Initial Fault Finding

Please read the 3.1 Safety Notices and 3.2 General Notes before commencing a service operation.
You should also read the 3.3 Built-in Testing/Diagnostics. To begin the fault finding procedure, refer
to 3.5 System Trouble-shooting Check List which will advise on the appropriate course of action.

3.1 Safety Notices

The following checks are intended only for qualified service technicians.
When the display unit is powered with the case opened GREAT CARE MUST
BE TAKEN as the unit contains DANGEROUS HIGH VOLTAGES.The CRT
display anode is at 11 kV and voltages in excess of 400 V may be present on
the CRT Base PCB. In the LCD display, voltages in excess of 700 V may be
present on the Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL), connector SK9 and
its associated cable.
The radar scanner also contains DANGEROUS HIGH VOLTAGES in the
vicinity of the high voltage power supply unit, Modulator and magnetron
connections.
DANGER
Non-ionising Radiation

The radar scanner emits non-ionising radiation from the magnetron,

circulator and antenna assemblies. There are also low levels of ionising
radiation (x-rays) in close proximity to the magnetron when it is transmitting.
It should not be operated in transmit mode near to any persons, or within
enclosed buildings.

3.2 General Notes

1. IMPORTANT: Whenever the microwave core assembly is removed from the radome
assembly the 4 foot seals must always be renewed to guarantee the water seal integrity
of the radome unit.
2. See the Replacement of Parts chapter, notes and exploded views/photographs, in Parts 2, 3, 4
and 5 for guidance in dismantling and assembly of the radar.
3. The Connector / pin labelling convention used in this manual is as follows :
J4-6 means connector J4, pin 6.
4. When measurements to Picoflex ribbon cable connectors are specified, these can usually be
made by carefully probing the slots in the cable connector. Pin 1 is marked by the red cable stripe
at the end of the connector that has the wide location peg.
5. Video Noise tests. A number of diagnostic procedures make reference to whether video noise
can be observed. The procedure for verifying this is as follows: With the Sea Clutter and Gain set
to manual, as the Gain is gradually increased the screen should show increasing speckle
corresponding to increased video noise, indicating that the IF receiver is driving the video signal.
Under normal circumstances the range of adjustment over which the screen fills with speckle is
around 10% of Gain adjustment (approximately 85 to 95%). If the video signal is not present this
will occur over 1 or 2 % of Gain adjustment.
Service Manual 83138-2-Ch3 9

Part 1
Chapter 3

This chapter details the fault finding to isolate problems to scanner or display unit for the Pathfinder
series Radars and Chartplotters.

Part 1
Chapter 3

Pathfinder Radar/Chartplotter Series

6. Normal Motor Operation. For radome scanners, motor rotation commences when the radar is
switched on and continues during the warm-up countdown period and for approximately 1
minute afterwards with the radar in Standby. For open array scanners motor rotation
commences when the radar is switched to transmit. In both cases the motor starts at a reduced
speed for a few seconds and then accelerates to full speed (24 r.p.m.). If the motor is stationary
when transmit is selected, there maybe a few seconds delay before the display sweep is in sync
with the antenna rotation.
7. The Display unit may be powered with the case open after the rear case screws have been
removed. If necessary the CPU PCB may be operated unscrewed from the moulding if great
care is taken to ensure it does not short-circuit to any other pcb. Under no circumstances
should the LCD displays be operated without the LCD module plugged in to the CPU assembly
(connector J8) - to do so can damage the CPU PCB assembly.
8. Both the scanner and display unit operate from an internally isolated PSU. Thus ships battery
voltage measurements must be made with reference to the ships battery negative, whereas the
internally derived PSU outputs must be made with reference to the secondary ground. For the
LCD Display unit this can conveniently be probed at the GND test pad near J7 on the CPU PCB,
and for the CRT Display unit, any part of the metal sub-chassis. For the scanner unit this can be
conveniently probed from the metal casting of the scanner assembly which is connected to the
secondary GND. The open array motor and motor drive are referenced to ship's battery negative.
Unless otherwise stated measurements given in the text are relative to the secondary grounds.
9. When switching the display unit on/off repeatedly you will notice that it is necessary to wait for
several seconds after switching off before the unit can be switched on again from the POWER
key. This is quite normal.

3.3 Built-in Testing / Diagnostics

The Pathfinder series Radars and Chartplotters incorporate a diagnostics menu to aid the service
engineer in finding some of the possible faults that could occur with the system.
The diagnostics menu can be accessed from either standby or transmit modes by the following key
sequence:
Press the MENU key. Press the RADAR SET UP or CHART SET UPsoft key. Press and hold
ENTER for approximately 5 seconds - a new set of soft key options will appear at the bottom of the
screen. Select BUILT-IN TEST.
Note:
Generally a repeater display or a RC520 cannot access the diagnostic menu, although early display
versions may access very limited data.
See Diagnostics Menu - detailed description in Part 2, or Part 5, Section 3.6 for a full desciption
of its features.

3.4 Master and Repeater Displays

When two displays are connected via the HSB bus, it is necessary, prior to isolating the fault to the
scanner or the display, to determine which display is the master i.e. connected to the scanner. In the
event that the rear of the units are not easily accessible, then this may be determined by powering
both displays on and waiting for the WARMING UP banner to count down to zero.
10 Service Manual 83138-2-Ch3

Chapter 3. Initial Fault Finding

Power one of the two units off.

It will be possible to use scanner from the master display.

If the unit remaining powered up is the repeater, again a message HSB LOST will be displayed, and
the alarm will sound for about 5 seconds. If the unit then displays SCANNER NOT RESPONDING
then it is either a repeater or the scanner is faulty. Repeat the procedure above on the other unit to
determine if the fault is in the repeater or the scanner.

3.5 System Trouble-shooting Checklist

Read down the list until the appropriate fault category is found. Then refer to appropriate checklist:

We would also like to take this opportunity of reminding you of the minimum information that
must be filled on the Raytheon Marine Europe Warranty Claim Forms in order for the credits to
be processed promptly. These are listed below:
Customer Code
Return Authorisation Number (If Applicable)
Distributor Name and Address
Product Number
Original Product Number
Serial Number
Date of Installation/Sale
Date of Failure
Date of Repair

Without this information the warranty claim form will be subject to a delay in processing while
correctly completed forms are dealt with first. Incorrectly completed claim forms will be
returned for amendment.
All warranty claims must be returned within 15 days of the end of the month in which the
repair was undertaken to ensure that the credit will be raised in the following month.
eg,

Repair in January
Correctly filled in claim submitted by mid February, credit raised before the end of
March.

I would also like to draw your attention to the service report, since this information is also
useful to us for our statistical analysis. Please describe in one or two sentences in English, the
fault description, then the details of repair work done. A brief statement is all that is required,
however, service reports consisting of broken, PCB replaced, unit dead etc, will not be
accepted.

I would like to thank you for your help in this process and I am sure that you will appreciate
that the minimum amount of information requested above can be quickly and easily filled in on
the forms, thus enabling prompt credits.
We would also like to advise that all warranty repairs carried out will receive labour at the
single labour rate in force at that time, provided the standard terms and conditions of the

We would also like to remind you that in return for the 5% administration fee added to all
warranty claims for spares - (unless you hold consignment stock), in addition to the credit for
your spares used, RME expects you to cover the costs of electronic media which may be
required in the future for electronic transmission of warranty claims and credits, etc.
Again, should you have any questions concerning any of the above, please do not hesitate to
contact the Customer Support Department at Raytheon Marine Europe.
Thank you in advance for your continuing support and assistance with this.

Technical Update

ISSUE NO:
DATE:

Attached to this Technical Update are three data sheets providing additional information:
1. Use of Target Waypoint and Displaying Chart Information (Port Area & Tide Data)
Note:

This is an Interim Sheet and is included with the HSB Series Chartplotter
Owner's Handbook, except for the very early RC520 and RL70RC products.

It clarifies the use of Target Waypoints to ensure that the correct target waypoint within a
route has been selected. It then expands on the Port Area and Tide Data information that
can be displayed as chart information.
2. Using the Auxiliary Junction Box to Connect a SeaTalk GPS and Differential Beacon
Receiver
Note:

This is an Interim Sheet and is included with the HSB Series Chartplotter
Owner's Handbook, except for the very early RC520 and RL70RC products

The recomended method of providing position (course and speed over the ground)
information to the HSB displays is by connection to a Seatalk GPS. The RC520 and
RL70RC displays are supplied with an Auxiliary Junction Box, whose main purpose is to
make this connection easier. The junction box has two flying leads, one with a seatalk plug
for connection to the display and the other lead is for connection to a 12V power supply
(the display does not provide power for the GPS). When this method is to be used, the
interim sheet details the connection of a number of different type of GPS and (where fitted)
a beacon receiver to the Auxiliary Junction Box.
The connections detailed in Figures 1 to 4 ensure that the GPS will always operate in its
SeaTalk mode. Note that the Raystar 112LP must be the SeaTalk version.
3. NMEA OUT and HSB connector details for RL70, RL70RC and RC520
Additional installation information is provided in this data sheet. In particular, it provides
details for the connection of the NMEA OUT cable. It also provides similar information for
the HSB cables, should it become necessary to join them. With due regard to EMC, it is
important the screens of the HSB cables are joined , as well as the the blue and white cores.
Please bind a copy of this Technical Update into the Appendix of Part 1 of the Pathfinder
Radar/Chartplotter Series Service Manual.

We hope that you are pleased with the Raytheon equipment you have purchased and trust that it
will meet your expectations. However, to maximise your enjoyment of the equipment we would
like to draw your attention to certain chartplotter functions and features.

Use of Target Waypoints

Before starting to follow a route, you should always make sure that you have selected the correct
Target Waypoint within the route.
The Target Waypoint is
shown as a waypoint symbol
with a square box around it
and it is the position you wish
to navigate towards. Simply
choosing to follow a route
without checking could cause
you to navigate towards the
wrong waypoint.

Vessel navigating to
Target Waypoint
Target Waypoint

D4274-1

For example, this situation can arise after a route has been reversed or if a route on screen was
being followed but was stopped before reaching the last waypoint. In these circumstances either
place the cursor over the waypoint that you wish to navigate towards first and use the FOLLOW
FROM HERE soft key. Alternatively, use the FOLLOW ROUTE soft key and then advance
waypoints through the route until the desired waypoint is shown as the Target Waypoint.
Chapter 3 of the HSB Series Chartplotter handbook clarifies the terminology used above and
provides more detailed information in relation to the use of Waypoints and Routes.

Displaying Chart Information

Information provided on the C-MAP Chart Card can be displayed on the Chartplotter as described
in Section 2.3 of the HSB Series Chartplotter handbook. This information now includes Port and
Tide Data described below. The port area and the tide data object information pop-ups also
include other relevant entries such as depth area, land area and source of data.

Port Area
At large chart scales port area information is indicated by the symbol . The port facilities are
listed in the object information pop-up and, where available, details for each facility can be
displayed.
In some areas the chart shows symbols for individual facilities. The facilities and their associated
symbols are defined overleaf.

Introduction
The software for the RL70, RL70RC and RC520 can be easily upgraded by the
distributor/dealer. An upgrade may be required for reasons of product improvement, or adding
additional features/enhancements.
The key to the software upgrade is a special cartridge which contains the new programme. For
RL70RC and RC520, the 'upgrade cartridge' is inserted into the top slot in the chart reader.
RL70 displays do not have a chart reader, but can be upgraded from a RL70RC or RC520 via
HSB.
When a software upgrade is available, details will be advised to the distributor/dealers through
the Technical Update system, including instructions for obtaining the appropriate 'upgrade
cartridge'
Preparation
CAUTION - When the software is upgraded, existing waypoint and route lists will be lost
and the display will revert to the factory default settings. The display can generally be
restored to its former state, if the correct preparation is made before the software is
changed.
In order to retain the waypoint and route data and the current settings carry out the
following, before upgrading the software:
Waypoint and Route Lists - RL70RC and RC520 Displays
To save the waypoint and route lists it is necessary to have a second RL70RC or RC520
display available, complete with power lead and HSB lead. This display could be part of
a dual display system.
1. If required, save the current route (ref. Chartplotter Handbook, Section 3.3 'Saving
the Current Route')
2. Transfer the waypoint and route list via the HSB to the second display (ref.
Chartplotter Handbook, Section 3.6 ' To receive waypoint and route lists:').
Caution: Any existing waypoint and route lists, in the second display, will be
over written.
3. After the software upgrade, transfer the waypoint and route lists now in the second
display, back to the original display via the HSB (ref. Chartplotter Handbook,
Section 3.6 ' To receive waypoint and route lists:')

Introduction
The software for the R70 and R70RC can be easily upgraded by the distributor/dealer. An
upgrade may be required for reasons of product improvement, or adding additional
features/enhancements.
The key to the software upgrade is a special cartridge that contains the new programme. For
R70RC, the upgrade cartridge is inserted into the top slot in the chart reader. R70 displays do
not have a chart reader, but can be upgraded from a R70RC via HSB.
When a software upgrade is available, details will be advised to the distributor/dealers through
the Technical Update system, including instructions for obtaining the appropriate 'upgrade
cartridge'.
Note that 'upgrade cartridges' for R70/R70RC CRT displays are different to 'upgrade
cartridges' for RL70/RL70RC/RC520 LCD displays and are not interchangeable.
Waypoint and Route Lists - R70RC Displays
To save the waypoint and route lists it is necessary to have a second R70RC, RL70RC
or RC520 display available, complete with power lead and HSB lead. This display
could be part of a dual display system.
1. If required, save the current route (ref. CRT Display Handbook, Section 5.4 Saving
the Current Route)
2. Transfer the waypoint and route list via the HSB to the second display (ref. CRT
Display Handbook, Section 5.6 (R70RC), or Chartplotter Handbook, Section 3.5
(RL70RC and RC520) To receive waypoint and route lists:). Caution: Any
existing waypoint and route lists, in the second display, will be over written.
3. After the software upgrade, transfer the waypoint and route lists now in the second
display, back to the original display via the HSB (ref. CRT Display Handbook,
Section 5.6 To receive waypoint and route lists:)

Technical Update

ISSUE NO: TU046A

DATE: 17.06.99

1. Introduction
This Technical Update clarifies the compatibility of the 5S 48" Open Array Scanner Unit with the 7"
CRT and LCD Display Units. It provides details of the new Display Unit software which optimises the
open array scanner performance and improves some display features. As an open array scanner draws
considerable power, installation requirements, particularly for 12V supplies, are discussed.
The above topics require some changes to the Owner's Handbooks and copies of the Interim Sheets for
the Scanners, CRT Display and HSB Series Radar are attached and should be read in conjunction with
this Technical Update.

2. Clarification of Display Unit Compatibility with Radar Scanner Units

CAUTION
The 5S 48" Open Array Scanner must not be used with the SL70 or Autohelm 7" LCD Display
Unit. This may result in damage to the display due to the high power requirements of the open
array scanner.
Radome and open array scanner units can be connected to the RL70, RL70RC, R70 or R70RC display
units to form radar systems.
In addition the two Radome scanner units can be connected to SL70, or Autohelm 7" LCD display
Refer to the Interim Sheet attached for changes to the Scanners Owner's Handbook.

3. Display Unit Software for 5S 48" Scanner Compatibility

To obtain all the features of the 5S, open array scanner, a new version of the display software is
required. This software is compatible with both radome and open array scanners. The new software will
be provided with all displays from the introduction of the open array scanners. If an older display is to
be connected to an open array scanner, then a software upgrade is necessary. Operation of the open
array scanner with old display software is possible, but performance will be degraded as the old
software provides only be 3 transmitter pulse widths (instead of 8) and AUTO operation will be
severely compromised.
The software version required for full operation is 4.15 (or higher) for a R70/R70RC display, or 5.05
(or higher) for a RL70/RL70RC/RC520 display. Display Units from the serial numbers given below
will already be fitted with this software:

Confirmation of the software version may be made by switching-on the display and checking the
version number during the magnetron warm-up sequence. Note that if a scanner unit is not connected
then the version number is only displayed for 10 seconds.
For a dual display system Raytheon recommend that the software of the Repeater Display is upgraded
as well as the Master display.
An improvement has been made to Sea Clutter automatic adjustment. The SEA control will now toggle
between Auto-Harbour (default setting), Auto-Offshore and Manual modes. In Auto-Offshore mode,
the Pathfinder Radar optimises the Sea setting to account for the effects of sea clutter. In harbours or
close proximity to land different auto settings may be necessary to cater for the effects of land
clutter. To avoid losing small targets it is therefore advisable to set the Sea control to AutoHarbour mode. Alternatively, set both Sea and Gain to Manual mode and then adjust the settings
to ensure all small targets are visible.
Refer to the Interim sheets for changes to the Owner's Handbooks.
A few navigators, GPS receivers, etc. output high rates of NMEA data and, if the display is particularly
busy with other tasks, a queue overflow is possible causing data to be incorrectly decoded, which may
be seen as a temporary loss of fix alarm. The new software eliminates the possibility of this problem.
The improvements to the Sea Clutter automatic adjustment and the handling of NMEA data are
available to both dome and open array scanners.
Where, necessary Software Upgrade Kits are available from the Customer Service Department.

4. Compatibility with Operation on 12V Supplies

The 4kW, open array scanner draws considerable power from the vessel's power source, but will
operate correctly, within its specification down to a minimum supply voltage of 10.7V, providing that
all recommendations for ensuring a low resistance power cable system are observed. Refer to page 15,
Power cable open array scanners and to page 27, Power Connections in the Scanners Owner's
Handbook.
To assist with operation at low voltages, the HSB LCD and CRT displays have been modified as
follows:
Software reset occurs at a lower minimum voltage level.
Display Unit, Power Supply PCB's will be capable of operating at lower voltages.
The new software will turn the scanner unit off, before opening the system relay in the event of
a power failure, or the supply falling below the minimum specified level.
These changes will be effective from the introduction of the open array scanner and will occur at the
serial numbers given above.

Technical Update

ISSUE NO: TU046A

DATE: 17.06.99

A further measure to enhance low voltage operation on the CRT displays is the removal of the system
fuse, F1. Raytheon recommend that power is fed directly to the radar via its own dedicated cable
system and MUST be protected by a thermal circuit breaker or fuse fitted close to the power
connection. Refer to the Scanner Handbook, page 27 for further details. This not only protects the radar
system, but also protects the power cable and any power cable extension. Additional to this
modification is a circuit change that prevents the system from powering-up, if the scanner unit cable has
shorted.
Older displays, which do not have the hardware modifications mentioned above, but have had their
software upgrade, will operate correctly with open array scanners under virtually all conditions,
providing they have been properly installed. In the very unlikely event of a battery at 10.7V and wind
speed approaching 100 knots, then the radar may reset or power down.

Power Cable

This section should read as follows:

The HSB Series display is intended for use on ships DC power systems
operating in the 10.7 to 44 V DC range (that is, 12 V, 24 V and 32 V). A
1.5 m (5 ft) power cable is supplied for connecting the ships DC power
to the radar via the display unit.
Longer power cable runs may require larger wire gauges to minimise any
voltage drop in the cable. The scanner type and the length and type of the
inter-unit cable also affect the wire gauge required for the extension

Raytheon Marine Company Interim Sheet

power cable. For further details on the master display power cable length
refer to the HSB Series Radar Scanners Owners Handbook.
If a longer power cable run is required, use the supplied power cable to
connect to the display unit. Then use a suitable connector block to
connect the free end to the extension cable, taking particular care to
ensure the correct polarity. The supplied power cable has a cross-section
of 2.0 mm2.
Note: For repeater displays, the power cable may be extended by up to
20 m using a wire gauge of 1.5 mm2 (AWG 16) or greater, irrespective of
the inter-unit cable length.

display software is required. This software is compatible with both
radome and open array scanners. The new software will be provided
with all displays from the introduction of the open array scanners. If an
older display is connected to an open array scanner, a software upgrade
is necessary.

Preface

The following paragraphs should be added above Warranty:

Display Software Version

For full operation of the 5S open array scanner, the display software
version must be 4.xx (or higher) for a R70/R70RC, or 5.xx (or higher)
for a RL70/RL70RC. These software versions are normally already
installed in the display unit and are also fully compatible with the 2D and
4D radome scanners.
Early display units may not have the correct software for use with open
array scanners and will therefore require upgrading.
The software version can be confirmed by switching-on the display and
checking the version number during the magnetron warm-up sequence.
Note that if a scanner unit is not connected then the version number is
only displayed for 10 seconds.
We recommend that where a repeater display is fitted, both the repeater
and the master display are upgraded.
Where, necessary Software Upgrade Kits are available from your dealer,
distributor or from Raytheon Marine, Part Nos. R55020 (R70/R70RC)
and R55019 (RL70/RL70RC).
