Safety precautions

Adhere to the following safety precautions:

Electrostatic discharge (ESD)
You must be properly grounded when making contact with the Alcatel-Lucent 1850
Transport Service Switch (TSS-320 and TSS-160) frame and handling circuit packs, disk
drives, and tapes. Wrist strap ground cords should be routinely tested for the minimum 1megohm resistance. The code of the Wrist strap is AD 03406 0001.
Plug-in storage
Circuit packs should be stored in static-safe packaging or in a grounded cabinet.
For additional safety precautions, please see the Safety Guide.
General Rules

Check that the equipment is operating with all the shields properly positioned (dummy
covers, ESD connector protections, etc.).
Carefully observe the front-panel warning labels prior to working on optical connections
while the equipment is in-service.
To reduce the risk of damaging the electrostatic sensitive devices, it is mandatory to use
the elasticized band (worn around the wrist) and the coiled cord connected to the rack
ground when having to touch the equipment.
FIXING THE UNITS (AND MODULES) INTO THE SUBRACK
(caution to avoid equipment damage)
The screw tightening torque for fixing the units (and modules, if any and if screwfastened) into the subrack must be:
2.8 kg x cm (0.28 Newton x m) 10 %
Exceeding this value may result in screw breaking.
Rules for shielded cables

WARNING: The intra-building port(s) of the equipment or subassembly is suitable for

connection to intrabuilding or unexposed wiring or cabling only. The intra-building
port(s) of the equipment or subassembly MUST NOT be metallically connected to
interfaces that connect to the Outside plant or its wiring. These interfaces are designed
for use as intra-building interfaces only and require isolation from the exposed Outside
plant cabling.
The addition of Primary Protectors is not sufficient protection in order to connect these
interfaces metallically to Outside plant wiring.
Equipment heat release
viii

Alcatel-Lucent - Proprietary
See notice on first page.

8DG09019HAAATQZZA
June 2009

Due to high heat release of the TSS-320 and TSS-160 equipments, special room cooling
is required.

Electrostatic discharge

Electrostatic discharge (ESD), caused by touching with the hand for example, can destroy
semiconductor components. The correct operation of the complete system is then no
longer assured. Industry experience has shown that all semiconductor components can be
damaged by static electricity that builds up on work surfaces and personnel. The
electrostatic discharge can also affect the components indirectly via contacts or conductor
tracks.
The electrostatic charges are produced by various charging effects of movement and
contact with other objects. Dry air allows greater static charges to accumulate. Higher
potentials are measured in areas with low relative humidity, but potentials high enough to
cause damage can occur anywhere.

ESD instructions

Observe the following ESD instructions to avoid damage to electrostatic-sensitive

components:
Assume that all solid-state components and assemblies are sensitive to ESD.
Wear working garment made of conductive (ESD safe) not entirely cotton to avoid
electrostatic charging.
Touch the circuit packs at the edges or the insertion and removal facilities only.
Touch the SFP modules at the edges only.
Ensure that the rack is grounded.
Wear a properly grounded ESD wrist strap (connected to the rack bonding point, for
example).
Work in an ESD safe work area or workstation. An ESD safe work area should be
equipped with a grounded ESD wrist strap and a grounded ESD mat or ESD grounded
dissipative work surface. A grounded ESD mat or work surface must have a ground cord
with one end attached to the mat or surface and the other end connected to a ground point
(the rack ESP bonding point, for example). Do not work with ESD sensitive devices
unless the area is properly equipped.
Conductively connect all test equipment and trolleys to the rack ESP bonding point.
Store and ship circuit packs and components in their shipping packing. Circuit packs and
components must be packed and unpacked only at workplaces suitably protected against
build-up of charge.
Whenever possible, maintain the relative humidity of air above 20%.
ESD instructions are valid in the field during the installation steps.

Electrical installation rules

Overview
Description

Installation must be executed without powering the equipment.

Ground connection protection must be the first operation.
The power supply connection must be the last to be executed.
The electrical wiring is located directly on the boards front plate PSF320, EC320, and
MATRIX, and on the upper side of the Back Panel TSS-320 and over the sub-rack TSS160 for the common parts.
Electrica SFP modules can be plugged on data units (see 2-13)
The optical connections are directly wired on the units.
Figure 38 on page 2-11 illustrates all the connection points on the TSS-320 equipment.
Figure 84 on page 2-66 illustrates all the connection points on the TSS-160 equipment.
To properly install the cable and fiber inside the rack, use the spaces shown in Figure 33
on page 2-3.

Figure 34, Figure 35, and Figure 36 show the possible rack lay-out configuration.
The assembly sequence for a correct installation of the sub-racks into the rack depends on
which direction the cables originate from:

If the cables originate from the bottom, the first subrack must be assembled on the
top of the rack

If the cables originate from the top, the first subrack must be assembled on the
bottom of the rack

All the intershelves optical connections always run through the cable ducts that are
vertically placed on the racks as shown in Figure 34, Figure 35 and Figure 36 on page 24, 2-5, and 2-6.

HO to HO+LO migration (MT320LO and LOAs)

Description

The migration from HO to HO+LO requires the replacement of HO Matrix units with
HO+LO matrix units and the insertion of LOA10G adapter cards in reserved slots. This
could imply moving the already inserted cards to other free slots with traffic hit, not
needed if reserved slots were left free as per handbook and DRACO configurator
recommendations.
The following steps describe the procedure to upgrade from the MT320 to the new
MT320LO.
1
2

Disconnect the electrical cables from standby MT320.

Replace the standby MT320 with the new MT320LO.

Reconnect the electrical cables to the new MT320LO.

Wait till the EPS led becomes orange (not blinking) and the status led becomes
green. Operate a manual EPS to make the new MT320LO active.

Disconnect the electrical cables from MT320 (in standby).

Replace the MT320 with the new MT320LO.

Reconnect the electrical cables to the new MT320LO.

Figure 146 reports the Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-320 subrack layout before and after the
migration.
Table 21 reports all the possible configurations of LOA10G card into the Alcatel-Lucent
1850 TSS-320 equipment in Release 3.x.
