INTRODUCTION
The protection of the roofing system against environmental factors represents one of the main challenges for the
design of roof structures: to make them functional, it is necessary to guarantee protection against rainwater whilst at
the same time the necessary breathability.
This is the only way to maintain the functionality of each element of a satisfactory and durable roofing system.
Freudenberg Politex created
in the ST version, consisting of two polypropylene spunbonded nonwoven
Breathable
layers that incorporate a microporous polyethylene film.
Similarly the
PLUS version comprises polyester spunbonded nonwoven combined with a polyurethane film.
These products:
create a protective barrier, mainly against water penetration should the covering tiles break or move;
due to their permeability, allow the natural circulation of air whilst ensuring that the overlaying tiles and
thermal insulation remain dry.

DOUBLE VENTILATION
Sophisticated research has lead to new construction techniques called ventilated systems, namely structures where
the air can circulate naturally within the pitched roof area.
The advantages of this design are well known:

during the summer months, ventilation of the roof area allows the heat to dissipate naturally, thus avoiding transfer
into the house;
during the cold and wettest months, the circulating air allows the insulating material together with the roof tiles to
remain dry, thus preventing the occurrence of deterioration.

The presence of the

breathable membrane
allows the regulation of the air flow created within the
primary ventilation P (between the thermal insulator and
underslating) and the secondary ventilation S
(micro-aeration between
and the tiles above).

BREATHABILITY

thable

It is well known that in older houses, the loft (the non-habitable roof space) guarantees a partially ventilated area,
preserving the roof for many years.
In recent years, the conversion of these lofts into additional accommodation and the environmental laws covering
energy saving measures have strengthened the importance of an appropriate ventilation of the roofing area.
The regulation of humidity on the roof and within the lofts are now more and more linked to the performance of the
underslating membrane.
In particular during winter
, thanks to its perfect breathability, when laid above the thermal insulator prevents
Breathable
the formation of dew drops within the same insulating layer, that would otherwise be ineffective.
Thanks to
, humid stagnant air is able to permeate through the membrane, where it evaporates or, if
condensing, flows into the gutter.

SINGLE VENTILATION
The roofing systemcan be realized without the use
of thermal insulation. The underslating is laid directly
on to the wooden decking or on to the clay block
floor.
thable

In this way
offers its outstanding resistance
to water penetration and furthermore, thanks to its
breathability, regulates the dispersion of flow of
vapour coming from the inside, thus preventing the
wooden basis from rotting.

sheets are nailed down parallel to the gutter line; using a double sided waterproof acrylic tape it is possible to
seal screw or nail heads and join overlapped sheets of the breathable membrane.
The laths and the counter-roof lathing can be located in order to provide the structure with the necessary air circulation.

TEARING RESISTANCE
is nailed on beams without continuous underlying support. This makes it subject to mechanical stress, in particular
during completion of works.
These stresses are balanced by the values of nail tearing resistance of the underslating.
The technical literature identifies three classes that, according to the values mentioned below, determine the distance between
the beams:

DOUBLE SIDED ADHESIVE TAPE
For joining
sheets and protecting from possible water infiltration the areas where nails or screws have been
applied. Freudenberg Politex recommends the use of a double sided adhesive tape, comprising a transparent polyester film
with an acrylic adhesive, providing a high resistance to water on both sides.
