AutoCAD is a drafting program, used for technical drawing. It is useful to have an
understanding of how it works, you may use it some as an engineer, but most
design firms have draftsmen who do the bulk of their technical drawing under the
direction of the engineers. I work in bridge design, and I make only minor edits to
drawings, if substantial work needs done I mark up a copy of what I need and give it
to the CAD guys. I do use drafting software sometimes to obtain measurements and
properties of shapes that are harder to calculate, just because it is sometimes faster
to sketch things than to do the math. You can learn everything you need for using
CAD programs in a couple of days. AutoCAD and Microstation are the two most
common.
STAAD.Pro is a structural analysis and design program. You use it to actually model
and design things like bridges and buildings - obtaining forces and displacements
and such. If you specialize in structures as a civil engineer, you will need to become
familiar with how some analysis program works, you will probably use quite a
variety of them during your career. STAAD is good, we prefer a program called
MIDAS here at my office, GT-STRUDL is also very good in terms of general analysis
and design. There are also a variety of programs for specialized designs, such as
Florida-Pier for substructures, MDX for steel girders, etc., you'll probably learn some
of these as well. There isn't much benefit to trying to learn these programs on your
own, because different companies prefer different ones, and if you learn the basics
you can adapt to any of them with just a little practice. Do summer internships, and

when you get a job later on you'll be able to learn the software that is specific to
your employer.
It is more important for you right now to learn the things going on in the background
of those programs, to understand the answers that the software gives you so that
you can effectively use it and interpret it. If you are interested in structures, and the
