INSTRUCTIONS
1. This is an 80 minutes, Close Book test. One letter size crib sheet (8 x 11) and a non-programmable
calculator may be used, but no other material will be allowed including blank paper.
2. Put your name, student number, email address and section on your test paper in the space provided above.
Dont turn this page until you are instructed to.
3. Use the test paper for all work (including scratch work) and you may use the back of pages; Do not tear
out pages. Hand in the test paper at the close of the examination.
4. Do all problems. Make sure you number the solution parts according to the problem. You must show
your work and explain clearly what you are doing. Answers without explanation or shown work where
appropriate will receive low or zero points.
5. Keep your York photo ID (or other acceptable photo ID) on the desk in front of you so that the instructor
may inspect it without disturbing you.
6. No questions will be allowed during the exam.

Problem 2 [25 points]

A speech signal has the following characteristics:

Duration: 15 seconds.
Maximum frequency component: 6 kHz.
The speech signal is encoded into binary format using a pulse code modulator (PCM).
(a) [5 points] Determine the maximum sampling interval between two samples of the sampled speech signal.
(b) [10 points] Determine the minimum number of quantization levels used in the uniform quantizer if the peak

signal power to average quantization noise power is required to be at least 40 dB.

(c) [10 points] Calculate the minimum storage capacity needed to store the digitized speech signal.

used to represent bit 1 and bit 0 in a binary communication system over a noisy channel corrupted with additive
White Gaussian noise (AWGN) n(t) of zero mean and power spectral density N0/2 = 1012 Watt/Hz. The received
signal is defined by

r (t ) = si (t ) + n(t ), i = 1, 2 (0 t 3T ) .
The receiver shown below is used to detect the transmitted bits from the received signal r(t).

r (t ) = si (t ) + n(t )

was transmitted.
(c) [7.5 points] Calculate the signal component a2(3T) at the output of the switch S1 assuming that signal s2(t)
was transmitted.
(d) [5 points] Calculate the value of threshold 0 used in the maximum likelihood (ML) detector if bits 1 and 0
