Mark chooses UW-Stout

made his college choice of the
University of Wisconsin-Stout
ocial last Tuesday during a
brief signing ceremony with
family and friends at EHS.
Although Mark plans to play
football at UW-Stout, sports
was not the biggest factor in his
decision.
Mark said academics was
his top priority. His goal is to
become an aerospace engineer,
and academically Stouts engineering program was the best
t.
Since thats what I am
going to school for, engineering
was denitely the clincher for
me, Mark said.
Mark narrowed his search
to UW-River Falls, UW-Eau
Claire and UW-Stout once he
decided to play football and
stay close to home for college. Football coaches at all
three Wisconsin Interscholastic
Athletic Association schools
had recruited Mark to join their
programs.
Marks parents, Jackie
and Steve Mark, credited his
commitment to academics at
Tuesdays signing ceremony. They recalled a discussion during the college search
process about whether Mark
should try to play football at a
higher-level NCAA program.
Mark responded that his top
priority was to nd a school that
ts his engineering goals.
He said, Mom, heres the
deal, Jackie Mark recalled.
When you get into Division
1 and 2, its really sports-based.
Thats serious stu. I need to
put my career in engineering
rst, and play football as my
fun.
Mark played a number of
positions for the Panthers

The Ellsworth boys basketball team improved to a

4-7 record in Middle Border
Conference play this season
with a 63-56 victory over
Amery last Tuesday.
The Panthers were led
oensively by two underclassmen. Sophomore Drake Flom
knocked down six three-pointers and nished with 27 points
of oense. Freshman Logan
Benson also scored 19 points,
with nine coming on free
throws. Flom also grabbed 12
rebounds in the game.
With only two weeks left
in the regular season, the
Ellsworth boys basketball team
had only three games remain-

football team on oense and

defense this year. Mark played
middle linebacker on defense,
and jumped between multiple
positions on the oensive line.
At UW-Stout, Mark said he
will play on defense and feels
most comfortable at the middle
linebacker position.
I talked to all the coaches,
I sat down with the defensive
coordinator, Mark said. And
he ran me through where he
thought I would be the best
t. He saw my future, what he

thought was the best t for me.

So that was great, it really felt
like home.
Mark credited the UW-Stout
football program for having an
orientation process that made
him feel comfortable. The orientation program was organized
and gave recruits the opportunity to meet with players and
learn more about life in college.
At Stout, we sat down with
the players, Mark said. They
told us what it was like. They
took us out for dinner, they

showed us everything from the

ins and the outs. They did a
heck of a job.
Mark said it was a relief now
that he has the college selection
process completed. Now he is
ready to focus on nishing his
senior year of school at EHS.
Its nice to have it all done
and over with, he said. I can
just focus on the rest of my year
now. Put college aside for now
and pick it up in the summer
with lifting. Be ready to go by
Aug. 13.

The Prescott wrestling team

is sending Ty Sanford and Dillon
Kimmen to the Division 2 individual sectional tournament
on Saturday after they nished
top-two at Saturdays Ellsworth
regional.
As a team, Prescott nished
in fourth place out of six with
a score of 129.5. Kimmen led
the Cardinals as the teams
sole regional champion after
he pinned Ellsworths Jacob
Kinneman in the third period
of the 220-pound title match.
Kimmen jumped out to a 2-0
lead after two periods in the
match. He solidied the win in
the third after landing a move
that put the Panthers Kinneman
on his back.
I basically just broke him
down, Kimmen said about the
move that earned him the pin.

and faced a lot of tough kids. But

its been going pretty well.
Kimmen said earlier this season that one of his season goals
is to earn a spot at the Division
2 individual state tournament.
Now he has to nish top-three at
this Saturdays Osceola sectional
to make that happen.
I think its attainable,
Kimmen said. There are some
really tough kids that I have
already faced. Ive not always
come out on top, but I think if I
work really hard I denitely have
a shot at going to state.
Sanford also nished in second place at 195 pounds in order
to advance to the Osceola sectional. The Cardinals sophomore
defeated a Bloomer-Colfax wrestler by 12-5 decision to advance
to the nals. Osseo-Fairchild/
Augusta/Fall Creeks Jerey
Breaker defeated Sanford by fall
in the championship match to
drop him to second place.
Kimmen and Sanford will
wrestle in the Osceola sectional
on Saturday, Feb. 20 with the

at SVHS. This has been valuable as a business education
teacher, a position in which
he has worked at Spring
Valley for 28 years.
You kind of get more of
a pulse of whats going on,
Bosshart said. I am afraid
if I were not coaching that
I would kind of get out of
that loop a little bit. Im not
all that young anymore, and
there is getting to be an age
gap. Every year that age gap
is getting bigger.
Bosshart said many students have remained connected with the basketball team
even after their graduation
from SVHS. Many keep tabs
in the local media, and some
even return to see the team
during practices and games.
All three of Bossharts
sons have played basketball
under the direction of their
father as students at SVHS.
Bossharts youngest son,
Dylan Bosshart, currently
plays with the varsity team
as a freshman. His oldest son,
Tyler, played basketball at
SVHS from 2005 through
2009. Middle son, Kyle, was
part of the basketball team
from 2008 through 2012.
Bosshart said being the
son or daughter of a head
coach at the high school level
can be an interesting dynamic
at times.
They understand there
are positives and negatives
of being a coachs kid,
Bosshart said about his sons.
They get more opportunities in the oseason, have
more resources, all that kind
of stu is really an advantage
to them. The disadvantage is
sometimes they have to ght
that perception there might
be that because they are the
coachs kid, things might not
always be fair.
Bosshart has had his share
of successful seasons during
the past 26 years. His teams
have won ve conference,
regional and sectional championships during his tenure. Athletic director Matt
Ducklow said one interesting
statistic is that Bosshart has
never lost a sectional game,
holding a 10-0 all time record
in those tournament games.
Spring Valley teams under
the direction of Bosshart have
advanced to the state tournament in 1991, 1992, 1999,
2001 and 2004. Of course,
one of the more memorable
moments in Bossharts career
was in 1992, when Spring
Valley won a Division 4 state
championship. The Cardinals
defeated Cassville 66-51 in
the 1992 title game.
The Cardinals had nished as the Division 4 runner-up the previous season in
1991, and Bosshart said the
team returned many players
in 1992 who were dedicated
to getting a state title.
However, Bosshart said
the state title does not stick
out as the most memorable
moment in his coaching history. One big moment was
in 2008, when his son Tyler
knocked down a three-point
shot at the buzzer to help
Spring Valley defeat St.

Croix Central in the regional seminals. Another was

in 1990, when Bosshart
was a junior varsity coach
at SVHS. JV player Sean
Hoolihan decided to play in
a game the Saturday after
his father and SVHS teacher,
Larry Hoolihan, had passed
away. Sean ended up scoring
a triple-double in the game,
which ended up being a small
step in the healing process
for the Spring Valley community.
You could just feel
the emotion in the gym,
Bosshart recalled. That was
just something, the quality of
play. You could just tell he
was really driven.
Bosshart also recalled a
clutch basket from Travis
Hannack during the 1992
state championship run.
Hannack knocked down
a last-second shot to help
Spring Valley defeat rival
Elmwood in the rst round of
the playos.
Bosshart credited his assistant coaching sta throughout
the past 26 years for having a
hands on approach to working with players. His current assistants include Matt
Ducklow and Aric Gregg.
Previous assistant coaches
have included Rick Gould,
Duane Jourdeans, Cory
Ducklow and Je Thompson.
Ive been really, really
lucky that in 26 years we
havent had a ton of turnover on my sta, Bosshart
said. Ive really had a minimal number of coaches. My
assistant coaching sta has
been just phenomenal, they
really take ownership of our
program.

Ducklow also had the
experience of playing on a
Bosshart-coached team as a
student at SVHS. He said
what sets Bosshart apart from
other coaches is his dedication.
I think his commitment
to the game, his 26 years
of coaching, Ducklow said.
Now a days, you dont nd a
lot of long term coaches like
that. Its tough to nd guys
and girls who would stick
with coaching that long.
Bosshart said one important thing that basketball
players and coaches should
always remember is to keep
having fun. Sometimes at the
varsity level it can be easy
to get caught up in wins and
losses, and other expectations
that will turn the game into
almost a job.
As long as the enjoyment
remains, Bosshart said he
has no current plans to stop
coaching anytime soon.
It has to be something
you enjoy doing every single
day, he said. I tell the kids
all the time, if this is not
something you enjoy doing
you shouldnt be doing it.
The same applies to me.
Bosshart will be honored
as a member of the 2016
Hall of Fame class during
the WBCAs annual Hall of
Fame Banquet on Sept. 24
at the Wilderness Lodge in
Wisconsin Dells.
