SCULPTURE RESIDENCY IN TOOLANGI FOREST, VICTORIA
5 - 20 NOVEMBER 2016
The Toolangi Sculpture Trail was created in November 1996 by artists from the Asia-Pacific
region, including Australia. Sculptors worked with found material of the forest to respond to this
environment and to broader ecological concerns.
To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of this unique undertaking, Victorian artists are invited to
submit applications for a 2-week residency, from 5 - 20 November, creating site-specific sculpture
in the existing trail. Toolangi State Forest will provide the inspiration and materials for new work
which will be gifted to the people of Victoria.
Toolangi Sculpture Trail 2016 is supported by Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP),
Murrindindi Shire Council, Yarra Ranges Shire Council, Member for Eildon, Yarra Valley Arts, Kinglake Ranges Foundation
and the community of Toolangi.

Laura Jones
Jones talent for capturing lowers is showcased
in her irst solo exhibition at Olsen Irwin,
Wildlower. Narrowing her skew to Australian
natives, her cover image Flowering Gum and
Striped Cloth is just one of the many large-scale
works that celebrate Australian wildlowers. In
art, wildlowers have been used in Australia as a
way of exploring and deining place and identity,
says Jones. hey have been painted over the years,
sometimes as botanical curiosities, other times as
a means for redeining Australian art. Jones sees
wildlowers as a metaphor for who we could be as
a society, a symbol of our unique environment, a
motif for strength and femininity.

Laura Jones
As skilled with a pair of secateurs as
she is a paintbrush, Laura Jones past
moonlighting as a lorist, while she
studied at COFA, has informed her
still-life paintings. Jones collects lowers,
vases and sets up little vignettes for
her observation-based studio practice.
heres an ease to her arrangements and
composition, which is ofset with vibrant
colours and energetic marks that bring
a liveliness to her work, moving it into
the contemporary. A talented portrait
painter, Jones says she was drawn back to
lowers for her Wildlower exhibition
due to their symbolism. We hold a
nostalgic attachment to the European
lowers that have been with us since
early white settlement, says Jones.
Our fondness for them comes from
a romantic ideal of home, still visible
in our own gardens, detached from the
bush So in contrast to the reverence
for the rose, we claim the wildlower
when we want to identify ourselves as
Australian, they are expressions of our
Australian-ness, a tool to diferentiate ourselves
from the rest of the world.

20th Biennale of Sydney:
Embassy of Translation
he future is already here its just not evenly
distributed, a quote from leading science iction
author William Gibson is the source of inspiration
for the 20th Biennale of Sydney, the largest
contemporary visual arts event in the Asia-Paciic.
he Biennale is structured in thematic clusters
with each participating venue designated as
embassies of thought: Cockatoo Island (Embassy
of the Real); Art Gallery of New South Wales
(Embassy of Spirits); Carriageworks (Embassy
of Disappearance); Artspace (Embassy of
Non-Participation); Museum of Contemporary
Art Australia (Embassy of Translation); and a
bookshop (Embassy of Stanislaw Lem). For
the irst time, a former train station,
Mortuary Station (Embassy of Transition)
will also be a Biennale venue. In addition, a series
of in-between projects have been commissioned
for the Biennale including a project by artist
collective Brown Council.
Artistic Director Stephanie Rosenthal says: One
of the key ideas this Biennale explores is how the
common distinction between the virtual and the
physical has become ever more elusive.
A focus on in-between spaces is key: in terms
of our interaction with the digital world,
displacement from and occupation of spaces
and land, and the interconnections and overlaps
between politics and inancial power structures.
he Biennale will explore, in depth, the practice of
73 Australian and international artists including
Richard Bell, Daniel Boyd, Marco Chiandetti,
William Forsythe, Bharti Kher, Lee Mingwei,
Mike Parr, Nyapanyapa Yunupingu, Xu Zhen
and others. Around 70 per cent of the
represented artists will present new commissioned
works, including a series of performances and
site-speciic installations.

To April 16 Francis Upritchard. From her early
Travellers Collection (2003) with its bound mummy
and associated burial artefacts, to primates made
from discarded fur coats and more recent enigmatic
igures, Francis Upritchard has developed a particular
language of sculpture, referencing the deep recesses of
museums collections, the world of Um, counter culture,
high modernist design and futuristic imagining, and
combining art with craft practices. his twenty year
survey exhibition at MUMA, the irst for Upritchard,
will include little-seen as well as a number of signiicant
early artworks, her arresting sloths, a selection of curious
personal and ritualistic artefacts and talisman, her small
sculpted igures and their furniture supports, as well
as recent life-size freestanding igures such as Believer
(2012) and Sun Worship (2013). he exhibition will
show both continuing thematic threads and categories in
her practice as well as its material and subject evolution:
through objects and igures, animals and human
forms, small scale to larger, sculptural to more spatial
installations, and from a South Paciic cultural focus to
broader cultural and sub-cultural references including
Eastern mysticism and hippie counter culture.
