ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Harvest Party was a tremendous success! Thanks for all your help!
BeGroups, begin thinking about whether you are going to meet during the week of Thanksgiving.
Perhaps you may want to spend time together over a meal.

Part 1 ~ Ice Breaker: What is your favorite season in the year? Why?

Topic: Preparing for the Vote

[Pastor Doug]

Part 2 ~ Group Study & Discussion

Pastor Doug took a moment to speak about the upcoming election. We were reminded in the
sermon that despite how we feel about political leaders, we must pray for them. In fact, we must
pray for everyone. Due to the role this current election has played in our society, perhaps we should
consider how God might want the spotlight to be centered less on leaders and who we are as
Christ-followers.

One of the BeGroup values is mutual respect. This value must especially be practiced in light of this
topic & the cultural climate in which it sits. BeGroups are a place where people should feel safe,
respected, and loved. Differing opinions are inevitable, so an atmosphere of mutual respect is
essential. James 1:19 advises us to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger. Respect
one anotherlet this be a key tenet in your BeGroup. Remember, it is not political party that
combines the people of God, rather it is the life, death, burial, & resurrection of Jesus.

1. Without sharing who you plan on voting for in the upcoming election, do you find it difficult
to pray for all candidates involved? Do you find it generally hard to pray for the government
and/or government officials? If you feel comfortable, share a bit with your group.

Read 1 Timothy 2:1-6(NIV). Then read & discuss the questions below.

1
I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made
for all people 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet
lives in all godliness and holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants
all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God and
one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a
ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time.
1 Timothy 2:1-6

At times it might seem like prayer is used as a generic Christian answer for lifes issuespray about
it. Yet, the biblical witness continues to point Christs disciples to the action of prayer. This is
powerful! Prayer is a means to an end. The end is contact with God. Prayer is about being open to
God. It is not about saying certain words in certain ways. It is not about feeling, thinking, or acting
in a certain way. Prayer is the word we use for the ways we open ourselves to the living God.

2. Concerning this presidential election, how might you pray in a non-biased way, where God is
glorified? Do you find it difficult to pray in a non-biased way?

3. In reading 1 Timothy 2:3, what might you say is Gods desire for all people?

4. Have you realized anything surprising about yourself in this election? If so, share a bit with
your BeGroup.

5. Pastor Doug said that we are called to pray that we manifest the lifestyle we are called to in
all godliness and holiness (see 1 Timothy 2:2). What do you think it means to have a lifestyle
in all godliness and holiness? What does this look like practically?

Part 3 - Prayer
We are called to pray for all people, even politicians & governing leaders. Because God loves all people
and Jesus gave Himself for all people, every person has been sent to serve all people. To close out,
spend some time to share your prayer requests for the upcoming election. Also share any personal
prayer requests. Prayer changes things!
