All children are special and have rights. They are entitled to be
treated with respect and dignity and have the right to be protected
from all forms of discrimination.The UN Convention on the Rights of
Children is a piece of legislation that applies to young people under
the age of 18. It sets out the rights that children have including the
right to play, to be free from abuse and to be free from
exploitation. It is particularly relevant to Equal Opportunities. The
Human Rights Act 1998 strengthens adults and childrens rights and
is a piece of legislation which looks at the way in which we relate to
children. The Race Relations Act 1976 outlaws discrimination on the
grounds of colour, race, nationality and ethnic origin. The Disability
Discrimination Act 1995 outlaws discrimination of a disabled person
or child. The Sex Discrimination Act 1975 outlaws sex discrimination
against individuals. The Care Standards Act 2000 passed the
responsibility for the regulation to OFSTED the aim being to
standardize care throughout the country.
