Overview

2.1

Feature Introduction
Although the 2 ms HSUPA E-DCH TTI (ETTI) can increase the transmission bit rate by
decreasing the transmission delay in the Uu Interface, the shorter ETTI reduces the
interleaving protection in the time domain. As a result, the 2 ms ETTI requires higher Tx
power and better channel quality than the 10 ms ETTI. Otherwise, its performance may
be even inferior to that of the 10 ms ETTI. Thus, it is necessary to dynamically allocate
and adjust the ETTI on the basis of the cell load status and channel quality to make full
use of 2 ms ETTI HSUPA and improve the overall performance of HSUPA.

ZTE Confidential Proprietary

Adaptive HSUPA TTI

Dynamic ETTI allocation is based on the cell load and channel quality of a users location.
When a HSUPA service is being set up, the 2 ms ETTI is configured only if the load of the
accessed cell is below a specified threshold and the channel quality reported by the UE
is above a specified threshold. Otherwise, the 10 ms ETTI is configured.
The ZTE RAN also supports coverage-based automatic ETTI adjustment when a HSUPA
service is ongoing. For a HSUPA service using the 2 ms ETTI, when receiving a 6A
event that is reported by a UE and used for ETTI adjustment, the RNC can switch the
ETTI to the 10 ms ETTI. For a HSUPA service using the 10 ms ETTI, when the RNC
receives a 6B event that is reported by a UE and used for ETTI adjustment, and other
conditions of using the 2 ms ETTI are also fulfilled, then the HSUPA service can be
switched to the 2 ms ETTI.
In addition, the ZTE RAN supports HSUPA ETTI switching caused by radio resource
congestion. When a cell rejects a newly requested service because its uplink CE
resource is not enough, the 2 ms ETTI HSUPA services with lower priority can be
switched to the 10 ms ETTI.

Technical Description

3.1

ZWF25-01-033 Adaptive HSUPA TTI

The adaptive HSUPA ETTI feature is only applicable to Traffic Radio Bearers and is not
applicable to an individual Signaling Radio Bearer (SRB).
When an RRC connection is set up, because the UEs ETTI capability is not known, the
ETTI is fixed to 10 ms.
After a Traffic Radio Bearer is established, the ETTI configuration for the SRB is not
considered separately, and is the same as the ETTI for the Traffic Radio Bearer. After the
Traffic Radio Bearer is released and only the SRB is left, the ETTI used before the Traffic
Radio Bearer is released is maintained.
This feature includes ETTI selection when the service is initially established on the
E-DCH and ETTI transition after the service is established on the E-DCH. The scenarios
applicable to the above two sub-features are as follows:

The scenarios applicable to ETTI selection when the service is initially established
on the E-DCH include:

The new service is initially established on the E-DCH

Incoming relocation between systems.

Channel transition to the E-DCH.

Call reestablishment.

Before a hard handover, no E-DCH exists, and after a hard handover, the
E-DCH exists.

Before the serving cell is changed, no E-DCH exists, and after the serving cell
is changed, the E-DCH exists.

ZTE Confidential Proprietary

Adaptive HSUPA TTI

The scenarios applicable to ETTI transition after the service is established on the
E-DCH include:

3.1.1

A service is established on or deleted from the E-DCH.

A 4A event is received (based on user plane throughput measurement).

A 4B event is received (based on user plane throughput measurement).

A 6A event is received (based on UE transmit power measurement).

A 6B event is received (based on UE transmit power measurement).

Radio resource congestion.

Hard handover relocation.

Before and after a hard handover, the E-DCH exists.

Before and after the serving cell is changed, the E-DCH exists.

ETTI Configuration Principles When a Service is Initially Established

on the E-DCH
A conversational class service and a non-conversational class service that are initially
established on the E-DCH use different ETTI configuration principles, which are
described below.

3.1.1.1

ETTI Configuration Principles for a Newly Established Conversational

Class Service
The UE is configured to use the 2 ms ETTI if the following conditions are satisfied:
1.

The 2 ms ETTI parameter UUtranCellFDD.tti2msSuptInd for each cell in the active

set is On.

2.

All the Node Bs of the cells in the active set feedback the 2 ms ETTI capability. (If
the ETTI capability of the DRNC cell cannot be obtained through the Iur interface, it
shall be obtained from UExternalUtranCellFDD.edchTti2SuptInd.)

ZTE Confidential Proprietary

10

Adaptive HSUPA TTI

3.

The UE supports the 2 ms ETTI.

4.

The USubSrv.eTTI parameter related to the sub-service type that is obtained based
on the service class and rate assigned to the subscriber is set to "2 ms ETTI".

If one of above conditions is not satisfied, the UE can only use the 10 ms ETTI.
Note: If the 10 ms ETTI is obtained in accordance with the above principles but the 10 ms
ETTI cannot satisfy the GBR requirement (the determination method is described below),
the service establishment fails.
Whether the 10 ms ETTI can satisfy the GBR requirement of the E-DCH service is
determined as follows:
When the GBR of the UEs E-DCH service is not higher than 1.8 Mbps, the 10 ms ETTI is
regarded as satisfying the GBR requirement of the E-DCH service.

3.1.1.2

ETTI Configuration Principles for a Newly Established Non-Conversational

Class Service
First, the sub-service type on the OMCR is based on the service class and rate assigned
to the subscriber. Second, the ETTI configured by the USubSrv.eTTI parameter of the
USubSrv MO is obtained according to the sub-service type. Finally, the ETTI to be used
is determined in the following way:
1.

If the USubSrv.eTTI parameter is set to "10 ms ETTI", and if the 10 ms ETTI cannot
satisfy the GBR requirement, the service establishment fails.

2.

If the USubSrv.eTTI parameter is set to "2 ms ETTI", the final ETTI depends on
whether the feature of ETTI transition triggered by user plane throughput is enabled
or disabled and whether the feature of ETTI transition triggered by UE transmit
power is enabled or disabled. For details, please refer to the following two sections.
The detailed strategy is described in the following two sections.

3.1.1.2.1

Both of ETTI Transition Triggered by User Plane Throughput and ETTI Transition
Triggered by UE Transmit power Are Disabled
When both of ETTI transition triggered by user plane throughput and ETTI transition
triggered by UE transmit power are disabled, meaning that the following conditions are
satisfied at the same time:
1.

The Switch of ETTI Switching Triggered by User Plane Throughput Measurement

ULogicalRnc.ettiTraffVolSwch is Off.

2.

The Switch of ETTI Switching Triggered by UE Transmit Power Measurement

UlogicalRnc.ettiUePwrSwch is Off.

The ETTI configuration principles for the newly established non-conversational class
service are the same as those in 3.1.1.1 "ETTI Configuration Principles for a Newly
Established Conversational Class Service".

3.1.1.2.2

Either ETTI Transition Triggered by User Plane Throughput or ETTI Transition

Triggered UE Transmit power Is Enabled
When either ETTI transition triggered by user plane throughput or ETTI transition
triggered by UE transmit power is enabled, meaning that the following conditions are
satisfied:
1.

The Switch of ETTI Switching Triggered by User Plane Throughput Measurement

ULogicalRnc.ettiTraffVolSwch is "On".

2.

The Switch of ETTI Switching Triggered by UE Transmit Power Measurement

2.

The Switch of ETTI Switching Triggered by UE Transmit Power Measurement

ULogicalRnc.ettiUePwrSwch is "On".

The ETTI configuration principles for the newly established non-conversational class
service are described as follows:
1.

If the Switch of ETTI Switching Whether Consider UE Channel Quality and Cell
Load ULogicalRnc.ettiQualLoadSwi is "Off ":
1.1 If the following conditions are satisfied, the UE is configured to use the 10 ms
ETTI with priority. Otherwise the determination in step 1.2 is executed:

The 10 ms ETTI can satisfy the GBR requirement of this E-DCH service.

The Switch of ETTI Switching Triggered by User Plane Throughput

Measurement ULogicalRnc.ettiTraffVolSwch is "On" and the Switch of
Controlling HSUPA Service Initially Established on 2ms ETTI or 10ms ETTI
(UUtranCellFDD.hsupaIniEtti) is set to "0 :10 ms".

1.2 If the following conditions are satisfied, the UE is configured to use the 2 ms
ETTI. Otherwise, the 10 ms ETTI is configured:

The Cell HSUPA 2 ms TTI Support Indicator (UUtranCellFDD.tti2 msSuptInd)

of each cell in the active set is set to "Supported".

The UE supports the 2 ms ETTI.

All the Node Bs of the cells in the active set feedback the 2 ms ETTI capability
(if the ETTI capability of the DRNC cell cannot be obtained through the Iur
interface, it shall be obtained from UExternalUtranCellFDD.edchTti2SuptInd.)

Note: if the finial configured ETTI cannot satisfy the GBR requirement, the service
establishment fails.

ZTE Confidential Proprietary

13

Adaptive HSUPA TTI

2.

If the Switch of ETTI Switching Whether Consider UE Channel Quality and Cell
Load ULogicalRnc.ettiQualLoadSwi is On, whether the 2 ms ETTI can be used is
determined with priority. If the conditions for using the 2 ms ETTI are not satisfied,
the UE is configured to use the 10 ms ETTI.
2.1 The conditions for using the 2 ms ETTI are described as follows:

The Cell HSUPA 2 ms TTI Support Indicator (UUtranCellFDD.tti2msSuptInd)

of each cell in the active set is set to "Supported".

The UE supports 2 ms ETTI.

All the Node Bs of the cells in the active set feedback the 2 ms ETTI capability
(if the ETTI capability of the DRNC cell cannot be obtained through the Iur
interface, it shall be obtained from UExternalUtranCellFDD.edchTti2SuptInd.)

The UEs channel quality is good and the cell load is normal (the determination
method is described below.)

Note: If the 10 ms ETTI is obtained in accordance with the above principles but the 10 ms
ETTI cannot satisfy the GBR requirement, the service establishment fails.
Where:
1.

The method for determining the UEs channel quality:

The UEs channel quality is determined according to the reported CPICH Ec/No or RSCP
of UE. For how the UE measures P-CPICH Ec/No or RSCP, refer to "UE Channel Quality
Acquisition Modes" in the ZTE UMTS Admission Control Feature Guide. The details of
judgment are described as follows:
If the UE only reports P-CPICH Ec/No: When P-CPICH_Ec/No > EttiEcNo_Thresh, the
UEs channel quality is regarded as good otherwise bad. Where, EttiEcNo_Thresh is
obtained from ULogicalRnc.ettiEcNoThres.

ZTE Confidential Proprietary

14

Adaptive HSUPA TTI

If the UE only reports P-CPICH RSCP: When P-CPICH_RSCP > EttiRscp_Thresh, the
UEs channel quality is regarded as good. Where, EttiRscp_Thresh is obtained from
ULogicalRnc.ettiEcNoThres.
If the UE reports P-CPICH Ec/No and P-CPICH RSCP: Only when P-CPICH_RSCP >
EttiRscp_Thresh and P-CPICH_RSCP > EttiRscp_Thresh, the UEs channel quality is
regarded as good.
If neither the effective P-CPICH Ec/No nor the effective P-CPICH RSCP reported by UE
is obtained when the RNC is making the determination, the UEs channel quality is
regarded as good.

2.

The method for determining the cell load status:

For each RTWP common measurement report of RTWP, RoT is filtered according to the
following formula:
RoT (t) = RoTreport + (1-) RoT (t-1)
Where:
is the filtering coefficient, which is obtained from URncInfo.loadFilterCoeff.
RoTreport is the currently reported value of the RTWP measurement. The formula for
RoTreport is RoTreport (dB) = RTWP (dBm) - noise_floor (dBm).
RoT (t-1) is the result of the last filtering.
RoT (t) is the result of the current filtering.

The RoT level is determined according to the comparison between the filtered RoT and
the RoT level threshold used for ETTI switching:
RoT Level

ROT

Low RoT level

ROT< UCelInfoFDD.EttiRotThreshold

High RoT level

ROT>= UCelInfoFDD.EttiRotThreshold

ZTE Confidential Proprietary

15

Adaptive HSUPA TTI

When it is the low RoT level, the uplink cell load is in the normal state. When it is the high
RoT level, the uplink cell load is in the high load state.

3.1.2

ETTI Transition
After the service is established on the E-DCH, ETTI transition may be triggered by
adding or deleting a service, the variation of user throughput, the variation of UE
transmission, hard handover or the change of the serving cell.
The details are described as follows.

3.1.2.1

ETTI Transition Based on the Addition or Deletion of a Service

The ETTI transition principles are described based on whether the conversational class
service exists on the E-DCH after a service is added or deleted

3.1.2.1.1

Conversational Class Service Exists After the Addition or Deletion of a Service

If the conversational class service exists after a service is added or deleted, the ETTI
configuration principles after a service is added or deleted are the same as those in
3.1.1.1 "ETTI Configuration Principles for a Newly Established Conversational Class
Service".

3.1.2.1.2

Conversational Class Service Does not Exist After the Addition or Deletion of a
Service
If the conversational class service does not exist after a service is added or deleted, the
sub-service type on the OMCR is obtained from the service class and rate assigned to
the subscriber first. Then, the configured ETTI is obtained from USubSrv.eTTI in the
USubSrv MO according to the sub-service type. Finally, the ETTI to be used is
determined in the following way:

If all the non-conversational services are configured with the 10 ms ETTI on the
OMCR, and if the 10 ms ETTI cannot satisfy the GBR requirement, the service
establishment fails.

If one of the non-conversational services is configured with the 2 ms ETTI on the

ZTE Confidential Proprietary

16

Adaptive HSUPA TTI

OMCR, the final ETTI to be used is determined based on the principles of the
following two scenes differentiating whether the ETTI transition function triggered by
the user plane throughput and the UE transmit power are turned on.

3.1.2.1.2.1

The ETTI configuration principles after a service is added or deleted are the same as
those in 3.1.1.1 "ETTI Configuration Principles for a Newly Established Conversational
Class Service".

3.1.2.1.2.2

Either ETTI Transition Triggered by User Plane Throughput or ETTI Transition

Triggered by UE Transmit power is Enabled
When either ETTI transition triggered by user plane throughput or ETTI transition
triggered by UE transmit power is enabled, meaning that the following conditions are
satisfied:
1.

The Switch of ETTI Switching Triggered by User Plane Throughput Measurement

ULogicalRnc.ettiTraffVolSwch is "On".

2.

The Switch of ETTI Switching Triggered by UE Transmit Power Measurement

UlogicalRnc.ettiUePwrSwch is "Off".

Or

ULogicalRnc.ettiTraffVolSwch is "On".

2.

The Switch of ETTI Switching Triggered by UE Transmit Power Measurement

UlogicalRnc.ettiUePwrSwch is "On".

The ETTI configuration principles after a service is added or deleted are described as
follows:
1.

If the 10 ms ETTI is currently used:

1.1 If the 10 ms ETTI cannot satisfy the total GBR of all the services, and the
following conditions are satisfied, the UE is configured to use the 2 ms ETTI.

The Cell HSUPA 2 ms TTI Support Indicator (UUtranCellFDD.tti2msSuptInd)

of each cell in the active set is set to "Supported".

1.2 Otherwise, the current configuration of the 10 ms ETTI is maintained.

2.

If the 2 ms ETTI is currently used, the current configuration of the 2 ms ETTI is

maintained.

ZTE Confidential Proprietary

18

Adaptive HSUPA TTI

Note: In the case of adding a service, if the 10 ms ETTI is obtained based on the above
principles, but the 10 ms ETTI cannot satisfy the GBR requirement, the new service
establishment fails.

3.1.2.2

ETTI Transition Triggered by User Plane Throughput

The principles of ETTI transition triggered by user plane throughput are described as
follows:
When the uplink throughput of the user is low, it is regarded that the 10 ms ETTI is
enough to bear the throughput, and the user shall be reconfigured to use the 10 ms ETTI
to release some resources for users with more resource requirements.
When the uplink throughput of the user is high, which means that the user has high
requirements of the uplink throughput, if the cell load permits and the channel quality is
good (if the Switch of ETTI Switching Whether Consider UE Channel Quality and Cell
Load ULogicalRnc.ettiQualLoadSwi is "On", the cell load and the channel quality need to
be determined, and otherwise it is not necessary,) the user shall be reconfigured to use
the 2 ms ETTI to obtain higher user throughput and better user experience.
The conditions of ETTI transition triggered by user plane throughput are described as
follows:
First Event 4A and Event 4B are defined:
Event 4A: The measurement report value of user plane throughput is above an absolute
threshold for a period of time.
Event 4B: The measurement report value of user plane throughput is below an absolute
threshold for a period of time.
For the enabling/disabling of user plane throughput measurement, refer to 3.1.4.1
"Traffic Volume Measurement Used for ETTI Transition".

3.1.2.3

ETTI Transition Triggered by UE Transmit Power

The principles of ETTI transition triggered by UE transmit power are described as follows:
When the UE transmit power is high, it is regarded that the 2 ms ETTI has too much
influence on the uplink interference, and the user should be reconfigured to use the 10
ms ETTI to decease the interference on other users.
When the UE transmit power is low, if the user has high throughput requirements, the cell
load permits, and the channel quality is good (if the Switch of ETTI Switching Whether
Consider UE Channel Quality and Cell Load ULogicalRnc.ettiQualLoadSwi is "On", and
otherwise it is unnecessary), the user should be reconfigured to use the 2 ms ETTI to
obtain higher user throughput and better user experience.
The conditions of ETTI transition triggered by UE transmit power are described as
follows:
First, Event 6A and Event 6B are defined:
Event 6A: The measurement report value of UE transmit power is above an absolute
threshold for a period of time.
Event 6B: The measurement report value of UE transmit power is below an absolute
threshold for a period of time.
For the enabling/disabling of UE transmit power measurement, refer to

3.1.4.2 " UE

Transmit power Measurement Used for ETTI Transition".

1.

When Event 6A that is used for ETTI transition and reported by the UE is received,
the UE is reconfigured from the 2 ms ETTI to the 10 ms ETTI.

2.

If Event 6B that is used for ETTI transition and reported by the UE is received, and
the following conditions are satisfied at the same time, the UE is reconfigured from
the 10 ms ETTI to the 2 ms ETTI.

ETTI Transition based on UE channel quality and cell load is controlled by Switch of ETTI

ULogicalRnc.ettiQualLoadSwi. This function takes effect only when either ETTI transition
triggered by user plane throughput or ETTI transition triggered by UE transmit power is
enabled.
The change of the UE channel quality and the cell load cannot trigger ETTI transition,
When ULogicalRnc.ettiQualLoadSwi is "On", the UE channel quality and the cell load are
only used to determine whether the condition for the 2 ms ETTI is satisfied. Only when
the UE channel quality is good and the cell load is normal, can the 2 ms ETTI be used.
For the details of the usage of the UE channel quality and the cell load when the service
is initially established on the E-DCH, refer to 3.1.1.2.2 "ETTI Transition Triggered by

For the details of the usage of the UE channel quality and the cell load after the service is

3.1.2.5

ETTI Transition Triggered by Congestion

The function of ETTI transition triggered by congestion is controlled by the function
switch URncInfo.ettiCongSwch. When the switch is on, if the cell is congested due to
uplink CE, RTWP or uplink equivalent user number, 2 ms HSUPA ETTI users need to be
reconfigured to use the 10 ms ETTI to release resources for resolving congestion in the
procedure of selecting target users for load reduction.
The strategy for ETTI transition triggered by congestion is described as follows:
When the cell is congested due to uplink CE, RTWP or uplink equivalent user number, all
the users (including HSUPA users using the 2 ms ETTI and R99 users) are ordered
based on the congestion control priority. For the HSUPA users, the rate used for the
ordering is GBR/NBR. For the determination of the congestion control priority, refer to
ZTE UMTS Congestion Control Feature Guide. Guaranteed Bit Rate (GBR) is applicable
to streaming and conversational services. Nominal Bit Rate (NBR) is applicable to
interactive and background services.
When

target

users

for

load

reduction

are

being

chosen,

at

most

ULdCtrl.MaxNumUeOfDecRat users (excluding 10 ms ETTI HSUPA users) can be

selected according to their congestion control priority from low to high. The method is
described as follows:
If an R99 service is chosen, the DCH decreasing rate is executed.
If an HSUPA service is chosen, the 2 ms ETTI is changed to the 10 ms ETTI.
When URncInfo.ConForbAmrSwit is set to "forbidden", the HSUPA conversional services
including CS conversational services and PS conversational services are not chosen as
target users of ETTI transition. Otherwise, HSUPA conversional services should be
handled in accordance with the strategy of ETTI transition triggered by congestion too.
Note: Because ETTI transition is executed for a user, if the user who is an HSUPA user
has more than one RAB, the highest priority of congestion control among all the RABs is
used as the congestion control priority of the user.

3.1.4

Judgment for the UE Channel Quality

The judgment for the UE channel quality is as follows according to the CPICH Ec/No
and/or RSCP of the best cell reported by the UE:

If the efficient CPICH Ec/No/RSCP reported by the UE cannot be obtained when

judging, the current channel quality is regarded as good.

If only CPICH Ec/No reported by the UE can be obtained, the channel quality of the
UE is regarded as good when it is larger than the EcN0 threshold used for ETTI
transition set by the OMCR, otherwise it is regarded as bad.

If only CPICH RSCP reported by the UE can be obtained, the channel quality of the
UE is regarded as good when it is larger than the RSCP threshold used for ETTI
transition set by the OMCR, otherwise it is regarded as bad.

ZTE Confidential Proprietary

25

Adaptive HSUPA TTI

If both the CPICH Ec/No and CPICH RSCP reported by the UE can be obtained, the
channel quality of the UE is regarded as good only when both are larger than the
corresponding threshold; otherwise it is regarded as bad.

Where, for the following channel transition scene (The channel transition scene

scene includes the following:

transition from PCH state to E-DCH (in the PCH state the UE sends CELL UPDATE
message with the cause of

uplink data transmission or paging response)

transition from FACH state to E-DCH

transition from DCH to E-DCH

the mutual transition between E-DCH 10ms and E-DCH 2ms caused by the traffic
volume measurement

Where, for the above scene of transition from the common channel to EDCH, whether
the channel quality should be judged depends on the evaluation result in the section
DRBC F/P->D Performance Optimization in ZTE UMTS Dynamic Radio Bearer Control
Feature Guide.

3.1.5

The determination of the uplink RoT load is as follows:
ROT(dB)=RTWP(dBm)- Rise of

Thermal(dBm), RTWP is the result of the common

measurement, each time the ROT report is recorded after the common measurement is
reported, and the ROT is filtered as the follows:

Traffic Volume Measurement for ETTI Transition

Traffic volume measurement for ETTI transition is implemented by the user plane.
When the following conditions are satisfied at the same time, the measurement is
initiated:

The Switch of ETTI Switching Triggered by User Plane Throughput Measurement

ULogicalRnc.ettiTraffVolSwch is "On".

The E-DCH is established for the UE and the UE supports the 2 ms ETTI.

The Cell HSUPA 2 ms TTI Support Indicator (UUtranCellFDD.tti2msSuptInd) of

No conversational service exists on the E-DCH, and USubSrv.eTTI of at least one

of the non-conversational services is 2 ms.

The 10 ms ETTI can satisfy the GBR requirement.

Otherwise, the measurement is not initiated. If it has been initiated, it needs to be

Application Scenario
The general application scenario for this feature is described as follows:
ETTI transition based on UE transmit power and ETTI transition based on UE channel
quality and cell load indicate whether the HSUPA ETTI should be adaptively adjusted
based on coverage and whether UE channel quality and cell load should be considered
during ETTI adjustment, so that the 2 ms ETTI can be used when the UE transmit power
is low, the cell load is low and the UE has good channel quality. The performance of the 2
ms ETTI HSUPA can be used to improve the entire performance of HSUPA. When the
UE transmit power is high, the cell load is high, or the channel quality is bad, the UE can
only use the 10 ms ETTI. Compared with the 2 ms ETTI, the 10 ms ETTI can improve
users' successful PS RAB establishment rate and reduce the dropped-call rate.
This feature can improve the throughput of the entire system and other basic KPIs.
Therefore, if HSUPA is enabled, it is recommended to enable this feature.
ETTI transition based on congestion means that the resources of the 2 ms ETTI users
are released when uplink resources are congested to admit more users or hand over
users. This feature can improve the successful call establishment rate and reduce the
dropped-call rate. Therefore, when uplink resources are congested in the network, it is
recommended to enable this feature.
ETTI transition based on throughput can allocate an appropriate ETTI for a UE according
to the user's actual throughput requirement to prevent users with low throughput
requirements from occupying unnecessary resources, so that radio resources can be
fully used, and that the throughput of the entire system can be improved. Therefore, if
HSUPA is enabled, it is recommended to enable this feature. The effect is even better

ZTE Confidential Proprietary

65

Adaptive HSUPA TTI

when this feature is used together with ETTI transition based on UE channel quality and
cell load.

Impact on Network KPIs

The function of the ETTI transition based on UE transmit power and the function of the
ETTI transition based on UE channel quality and cell load have the following advantages:

ZTE Confidential Proprietary

83

Adaptive HSUPA TTI

When the UE transmit power is low, the cell load is low and the UE has good channel
quality, the 2 ms ETTI can be used so that the performance of the 2 ms ETTI HSUPA can
be fully used to improve the performance of the entire HSUPA. When the UE transmit
power is high, the cell load is high, or the channel quality is bad, the UE can only use the
10 ms ETTI. Compared with the 2 ms ETTI, the 10 ms ETTI can improve the ratio of
successful PS RAB establishment of the users and the dropped-call rate.

Disadvantage:
The function of the ETTI transition based on UE transmit power may increase the UE
reconfiguration.

6.5.2

Impact of Enabling ETTI Transition Triggered by Congestion

1.

None.
2.

Impact on Network KPIs

The function of ETTI transition based on congestion has the following advantages:
When the uplink resources are congested, the resources of the 2 ms ETTI users are
released to admit more new users or hand over users. This function can improve the
successful ratio of call establishment and dropped-call ratio.
Disadvantage:
The function of ETTI transition based on UE transmit power may increase UE
reconfiguration.
Some 2 ms ETTI users are transitioned to the 10 ms ETTI whose user experience may
be affected.

2.

Impact on Network KPIs

The function of ETTI transition based on user plane throughput has the following
advantages:
ETTI transition based on throughput can allocate an appropriate ETTI for a UE according
to the user's actual throughput requirement. In this way, users with low throughput
requirements are prevented from occupying unnecessary resources, so that radio
resources can be fully used, and that the throughput of the entire system can be
improved.
Disadvantage:
The function of ETTI transition based on user plane throughput may increase the UE

6.6

The Actual Test Data and the Result Analysis

Compare turning on and turning off the switch of E-TTI switching whether consider UE
channel quality and cell load ULogicalRnc.ettiQualLoadSwi, ZTE did some test on the
commercial networks which has turned on the function of adaptive HSUPA TTI.
Generally, after turning on E-TTI switching based on UE channel quality and cell load,
the improvement of the call dropped rate is obvious and the following KPIs have no
obvious negative gain: RAB assignment success rate, RRC connection setup success
rate, HSUPA throughput, uplink RTWP. Because different operators have different
strategy, the following network KPI figures are just for reference.

ZTE Confidential Proprietary

85

Adaptive HSUPA TTI

6.6.1

RAB Assignment Success Rate, RRC Connection Setup Success

Rate RRC
The following figure records the change of the RAB assignment success rate and RRC
connection setup success rate. The first timestamp represents the time when the
function of E-TTI switching based on UE channel quality and cell load is turned on, and
the second timestamp represents the time when the function is turned off. From the total
curve, the RAB assignment success rate and RRC connection setup success rate have
no obvious change.

6.6.2

Call Dropped Rate

From the following curve of the CS call dropped rate and the PS call dropped rate, it is
obvious that after the function of E-TTI switching based on UE channel quality and cell
load is turned on, the call dropped rate of CS and PS are improved for some degree
(Three timestamps represent the time when the function is turned on, the time when
Ec/No threshold is modified from -11 to -13, and the time when the function is turned off
separately). The PS call dropped rate is decreased by 0.01%, and the CS call dropped
rate is not stable which is decreased by about 0.03% to 0.04%, and is caused mainly
from the concurrent services.

ZTE Confidential Proprietary

86

Adaptive HSUPA TTI

6.6.3

The Proportion of 2ms E-TTI Users

When the quality is bad or the cell load is high, the service cannot be established on 2ms
ETTI, so when the function of E-TTI switching based on UE channel quality and cell load
is turned on, the decreasing of the proportion of 2ms E-TTI users is expected. From the
actual condition, after the function is turned on, the proportion of 2ms E-TTI users are
decreased from 83% to 72%, probably decreased by 10%, and when the Ec/No
threshold is modified from -11 to -13, the proportion of 2ms E-TTI users is increased by
about 2%.

ZTE Confidential Proprietary

87

Adaptive HSUPA TTI

6.6.4

Availability of the CE Resource

CE consumption of the 2ms users is higher than the 10ms users, so the trend of the
availability of the CE resource of the 2ms users is in accordance with that of the
proportion of the 2ms user.

6.6.5

The Uplink Throughput

The advantage of the 2ms E-TTI users is the delay experience and is not high throughput,
and in the commercial network when the test is executed, the traffic of the RNC is low,
and the throughput varies highly, so it is hard to observe the variation of the throughput.
But from the curve, it is normal variation and has no positive or negative influence to the
throughput.

ZTE Confidential Proprietary

88

Adaptive HSUPA TTI

6.6.6

The Average Value of the Uplink RTWP

The average value of the RTWP varies between -106.1 to -106.4. After the function of
E-TTI switching based on UE channel quality and cell load is turned on, there is no
obvious change of the variation region.
