Instruction to the students Final year


for information to the employer

1. Architecture Office Training AR-914


The subject is grouped under following sub-heads.
a). Complete estimating and specification of a small project.
You should preferably select such a project for estimation and specification
which will enable you to high-light" the local construction practices and the local
materials. Your statements should be supplemented and explained with the help of
drawings and/ or sketches wherever required and these should be attached to the
report.
b). A set of working drawings dealt by you in the Office. The set of working drawings
should include the copies of only those which are drawn by you. It is in your interest
to prepare such working of drawings which can be used by your employer in practice.
c). Log sheet
Regularly and neatly maintained log sheets should form the part of your
submission. Write a brief fortnightly report of the work done by you in the space
provided and get it signed by the immediate supervisor, or the Head of the
organization.
d). Certificate from the Head of the organisation regarding general impression,
regularity and performance.
A very good certificate will be ensured by the following criterias.
a).Your ability to understand and rightly interprete the instructions given to you by
your employer.
b). Your ability to carry out the instructions upto your employers satisfaction.
c). Your interest to learn more about the profession from the organisation.
2. Site Supervision Training A2 923

For the details refer Annexure-I The questionnaire supplied to you must form a part of
your final submission. The final submission may be explained with the help of
drawings, sketches. photographs. etc. The questionnaire should preferably be typed.

Field Observation Studies AR 932

For details refer annexure II. Your observation should high-light the typical features of
the building and/or a function. If you so desire you may conduct a survey of the
beneficiaries and thereby high-light the problem if any. Maintain and submit a diary
showing your day-to-day progress about the aspects related to field observation. The
observation should preferably be related to the construction technology. The
observation to be explained with the help of drawings sketches and/ or photographs.
4. Critical Appraisal. of Built projects AR 942
For details refer Annexure-III. You are required to select any one of the buildings in
the city and critically analyse it from the point of view of the aspects given in the
Annexure. The building that you select should be in use. The appraisal may be
supported with the help of photographs, drawings and/or sketches.
5. Field documentation of Architectural Details AR 953 (25 Nos.)
Though the details can be explained with the help of sketches, the working drawing of
the detail will be most appreciated, hence what is more important is the construction
aspect. The details may be about those elements which are under construction and
dealt by your office or about those that you have observed.
6. Viva-voce
You are required to appear for a viva-voce after the completion of your training and
after the submission.

Field observation studies

Practical Training
AR 923

The student is required to observe and explain. any one of the following, with the help of
drawings, photographs, charts, tables, graphs, sketches etc. so as to highlight the various
related aspects.
1. Observation about traffic movements use of spaces, advertisements etc. at local Air port
or Bus station or Railway station.
2. Observation about an Indian Villages related to rural architecture: spaces,
types
of
buildings, building materials, Functional spaces, nature of use of spaces, day-to day
activities, etc.
3. Comparison between good, ugly and beautiful buildings of similar type. Give your views
and analysis.
4. Study of the building elements of buildings of similar type, for example Doors, Windows,
verandah, balcony, fins louvers etc.
5. Study of man made and natural landscape elements in a group of buildings or in a
building.
6. Traffic movements at any public square or any busy streets.
7. Old Indian monuments in a city, their functions nature of construction, materials.
8. Study of the visual aspects of any building at Night.
9. Observations related to any structural innovations within or outside the building.
10. Study of vertical circulation systems In any building type. For example, stair, elevator,
escalator.

11. Observations about the Entrances of any public building, its scale, architectral treatments,
aesthetic etc.
12. Observatons of market place, its functions, land use, floors use, goods movement
parking, loading-unloading, waste disposal animals and applied problems etc.
13. Obsorvation about open spaces in residential or public buildings.
14. Facades, its architectural treatment, aesthetic considerations climatic considerations,
materials, construction, details, of any public or private building.
15. The building by laws & its effect on building design.
16. Typical internal spaces in any multi-storeyed residential building.
17. Interior of any public halls, theatres, entrance halls, and their technical requirements.
18. Study of a contemporary building as related to the impact of Indian art and architecture or
vernacular architecture.
19. Study of functions as related to schools, library buildings, hospital etc.
20. Study and analysis of a slum in your city.
21. Study of plaza, public parks and play areas.
22. Any other similar topic with the prior approval of the Training In-charge.

Practical Training

Critical appraisal of Built projects AR 942


The student is required to critically analyse any, building or a Cluster of Buildings,
available at place of training as related to following aspects.
1. Reaction of the client and/or users.
2. The architectural design programmes, the area, number of floors, their uses, clustering
flexibility etc. as was decided the design stage.
3. Restriction on the design because of site considerations, climate, cost, time, technical
aspects, finance, phasing, rule. Regulations and by-laws.
4. Assumptions in the part of the architects and the aspects based on which assumptions were
made.
5. The difference if any, between the final design and design executed.
6. Whether the assumptions made by the architect were found valid.
7. The maintenance and administration related aspects of the building.
8. The contractor's comment on the design from construction point of view.
9. Merits and demerits in terms of physical aspects, efficiency of plans, ventilation, services,
flexibility of space organizations, construction methods, construction details, quality of
materials, behavioral aspects and aesthetic considerations.
10. To what extent the purposes of the building design are served in reality, in your view, in
users view, in owner's view and public views.

Practical Training
At least 25 details of different elements, situations, materials to be documented during
Field Study from office records, personal observations elsewhere etc. This may include
historic as well as contemporary details. The selection of details should be based on their
special nature due to practical field situation.
