Balanced Content
Everyday Mathematics was developed
by the University of Chicago School
Mathematics Project (UCSMP) in order
to enable children in elementary
grades to learn more mathematical
content and become lifelong
mathematical thinkers. Concepts are
more fully understood after repeated
exposures. The Program Goals are
organized by the following strands
and extend across all grade levels:

Number & Numeration

Operations & Computation
Patterns, Functions, & Algebra
Geometry
Measurement & Reference Frames
Data & Chance

Research-Based, Tested in
Real Classrooms
The University of Chicago School
Mathematics Project (UCSMP) is
committed to improving mathematics
education in the United States.
Everyday Mathematics is a product
of this important commitment. The
program was written and field tested
one grade level at a time, beginning
with Kindergarten. Field tests
gathered information from classroom
teachers and students in three main
areas: teacher preparation of materials,
student response to materials, and
student achievement. Based on
teacher and student feedback, the
authors revised the curriculum before
Everyday Mathematics was published.
Everyday Mathematics began with the
premise that students can, and must,
learn more mathematics than has
been expected from them in the past.
This premise is based on the research
the UCSMP author team undertook
prior to writing the curriculum. The
following are some major findings in
this research:

The typical U.S. mathematics

curriculum is arithmetic-driven,
slow-paced with isolated
instruction, and broad, without
depth of content.

International studies show that

U.S. students learn much less

mathematics than students in other
countries.
Children are capable of learning
more mathematics in a richer
curriculum.
All children can be successful
mathematical thinkers.
Mathematics is meaningful to
children when it is varied, rich, and
rooted in real-world problems and
applications.

High Expectations
The Everyday Mathematics curriculum
inspires both teachers and students
to break through traditional math
barriers and explore math concepts
that arent usually taught at their
respective grade levels. Children
learn probability, geometry, patterns,
algebra, and data gathering and
analysis.
Mathematics is integrated into other
subject areas; it is also incorporated
into outdoor play, ongoing classroom
routines, and free periods throughout
the day. Some examples of this
enriched curriculum include:

Linking past experiences to new

concepts
Sharing ideas through discussion
Solving problems that relate to
everyday situations

Increasing fact power through
games

applications
Solving problems using multiple
strategies
Using mathematics in daily

Providing a variety of assessment
opportunities
Enhancing home/school
partnerships

Mathematical Themes
Students need to develop themes
at every step in their mathematics
education. These themes are the
habits of mind that students will use
when confronted with a mathematics
problem. In Everyday Mathematics,
students can start by developing easy
strategies and then move on to more
sophisticated methods of solving
problems as they progress through
each grade level. Some of these
themes are:
Mental Arithmetic Skills and Reflexes
Estimation and Number Sense
Problem Solving and Mathematical
Modeling
Algorithmic and Procedural Thinking

Lesson Features
While activities, lessons, and
experiences vary from grade to grade,
a typical Everyday Mathematics day
includes:
Three-Part Lesson Plan
Each lesson has been designed to
follow an easy-to-use three-part plan.
This format focuses on 1) Teaching the
Lesson by providing main instructional
activities for the lesson, 2) Ongoing
Learning and Practice by supporting
previously introduced concepts and
skills, and 3) Differentiation Options,
which supports the needs of all
students and is usually an extension of
Part 1, Teaching the Lesson.
Getting Started Activities
The daily Math Message leads into the
lesson for the day. The Math Message
contains quick mental math activities
and follow-up suggestions for Home
Links/Study Links.
Math Boxes
Math Boxes are a main part of review
and skills maintenance in Everyday
Mathematics. They provide continuous
distributed practice of skills and
concepts that students are learning in
the program. Math Boxes are also used
to support assessment.

Mathematics

Fact Practice and Games

Frequent practice is necessary in order
for students to build and maintain
strong mental-arithmetic skills
and reflexes. All grades of Everyday
Mathematics include games that have
been developed to help students
learn specific arithmetic and other
skills, thus ensuring automaticity and
mastery of basic skills and concepts.
Home Links and Study Links
Home Links and Study Links are
the Everyday Mathematics version
of homework assignments. Home
Links consist of active projects and
ongoing review problems that show
parents what the children can do in
mathematics. Study Links problems
review the content of the lesson and
most contain ongoing computational
practice exercises.
Projects
The cross-curricular projects in
Everyday Mathematics cover a wide
array of mathematics activities and
concepts created around themes that
interest students.
Explorations
Students will investigate and discover
mathematics through a variety of
manipulative-based, hands-on group
activities in Grades 13.

Explore, recognize, and identify shapes by feel. [Geometry Goal 1]
Describe attributes of shapes. [Geometry Goal 1]

Terms to Use shape, corner, side, round, curve, circle, triangle, square, rectangle
Materials a variety of shapes; selected attribute blocks (circles, squares, rectangles, triangles); Feely
Box; large posterboard shapes/shape collages from Activity 2 1; tape

Core Activities

Planning Tip See the

Mathematics Extension in Activity
1-3, page 51, for information
about making a Feely Box
(or Feely Bag).

Ongoing
Assessment:

Identifying Attributes of Shapes

Show each of the large posterboard shapes (which may now be shape collages) from the
previous activity. Pass around an attribute block of each shape for children to feel. Ask
children to describe one of the shapes without giving its name. Review the discussion from
the previous activity and prompt children to describe one thing about the shape, such as
the number of corners or sides. You can record the properties that children describe on the
reverse side of the shape collage. Ask children if they know the name of the shape, and
write the name on the back of the shape collage. Repeat this for all four shapes.
Put several matching pairs of attribute block shapes into a Feely Box. Have a child
reach in and pick out two shapes that feel the same. Ask the child to show the shapes to
the group, name them, and replace them for the next child. Ask: How did you know that
the shapes were the same? Repeat several times, then put the Feely Box and shapes in
the Math Center for free exploration and play.

Recognizing Student
Achievement
Use Shapes by Feel to assess
childrens ability to name shapes
and describe some of their
attributes. Children are making
adequate progress if they correctly
identify and name a triangle and
a circle. Some children may be
able to recognize the difference
between squares and rectangles.
[Geometry Goal 1]

ELL

Adjusting the Activity

For children who need more practice or a simpler introduction, hold up

a shape and ask children to locate the same shape in the Feely Box without
looking. Then have them identify and describe the shape. For a slightly more
difficult task, name a shape, and then have a child reach in and try to find that
shape by feel. Prompt children to explain how they identified the correct shape.

Adding to Shape Collages

(Revisit Activity 2 1, p. 88)

Put the shape collages and magazines from the previous activity in the Art or Math
Center and invite children to add to them. When the collages are complete, punch a hole
near the top and hang them with string so that both sides will be visible.

ART CONNECTION

Printing or Gluing Shapes

Cut small sponges into geometric shapes for children to use for printing.
Children dip the sponges into paint and use them to print patterns, pictures, or
designs. Children can also make pictures by cutting shapes from colored paper
(or using pre-cut shapes), then gluing them onto construction paper. You might show a
collage-based picture book by Lois Ehlert to inspire childrens artwork.

Teaching the Lesson

Key Activities
Children are introduced to base-10 blocks and a simple way to draw them. They match
numbers to base-10 blocks; model 2- and 3-digit numbers with one or two zeros; and translate
among spoken and written numbers, displays of base-10 blocks, and number cards.

Key Concepts and Skills

Count by 1s, 10s, and 100s with base-10 blocks.
[Number and Numeration Goal 1]

Explore place-value concepts with base-10 blocks; read and write 2-and 3-digit numbers.
[Number and Numeration Goal 2]

Build numbers with base-10 blocks in preparation for modeling addition strategies.

WHOLE-CLASS
DISCUSSION

Briefly discuss childrens responses. Ask children to explain how

they decided which digit names the tens and which digit names
the ones. These numbers will be revisited later in the lesson.
Explain to children that in todays lesson they will use base-10
blocks to create numbers.

The University of Chicago School Mathematics Project

Day 1 of this lesson, children should

complete the Math Message Follow-Up,

explore drawing base-10 blocks, and
begin matching numbers and displays of
base-10 blocks.

s t u d e n t m at h j o u r n a l

Day 2 of this lesson, children should

continue matching numbers and displays
of base-10 blocks and do place-value
exercises. Then have children complete
Part 2 activities.

Ongoing Learning & Practice

Children practice forming and comparing numbers by playing the Digit Game.
Children practice and maintain skills through Math Boxes and Home Link activities.

ENRICHMENT

Children use their calculators to investigate

place value.

Assessment Handbook

Children create as many numbers as

possible using three digits.

Additional Information
Advance Preparation You may want to spend two days on this lesson. For Part 1, you and
each child or partnership will need a set of base-10 blocks (3 or 4 flats, 10 longs, and 10 cubes
in bags labeled with childrens tool-kit numbers). To display a Place-Value Mat, make an
overhead transparency of Math Masters, page 56, or draw a Place-Value Mat on the board using
semipermanent chalk.

Math Message Follow-Up

WHOLE-CLASS
DISCUSSION

NOTE If students are fairly skilled at finding

sums and differences of fractions, this lesson
may take less than one day.

(Math Masters, p. 117)

Ask a volunteer to demonstrate and explain how to use the paper

ruler to measure the line segment. Sample answer: Line up the
right end of A
B
with the mark for 4 in. on the ruler. The left end
5
of A
B
is aligned with the mark for 1
B
is
6 in. The total length of A
5
5

4 in. 1
6 in., or 4 16 in. This ruler shows the two parts of a mixed
number: the whole number and the fraction. A mixed number
can be viewed as the sum of a whole number and a fraction.
Discuss why fractions greater than 1 are easier to interpret when
3
written as mixed numbers. For example, 24 clearly represents a
number greater than 2 but less than 3. This is not as obvious
3
11
when 24 is written as the improper fraction 4.

Geometry Template
A component of the Student
Materials sets in Grades 46; this is
a multifaceted drawing/measuring
device that features 23 geometric
shapes. Includes various sizes of
circles, triangles, and quadrilaterals,
as well as a half-size version of each
of the standard pattern blocks:
pentagon, hexagon, octagon,
and ellipse. Also contains two
protractors, a percent wheel, and
two rulers
(with 17 cm
and 7 scales)
for drawing
circle graphs
and measuring
angles and
lengths. 6 x
7, in blue
plastic.

Fact Triangle Cards

Non-tearable,
lightweight
plastic
flashcards
are more
durable than
those found
in the student
materials. Every
Fact Triangle
consists of three
numbers from a fact family. One
number, marked with an asterisk,
is the sum or product of the other
two numbers. By covering one
number with a thumb, children
can practice addition/subtraction
or multiplication/division facts.
Children also recognize the inverse
relationship between addition and
subtraction and the relationship
between multiplication and
division. Each set of 36 is packaged
with a reclosable plastic bag.
Overhead sets are also available.
