Since the introduction of the iPad, which reignited

a dormant tablet industry, Apple has gradually
improved upon the original model and today we
can use devices which are as powerful as some
laptops and desktop computers. The iPad is still king

pple entered uncharted territory by offering five different

models of iPad for sale at the same time. You can choose
from two Airs and four minis, which can be quite confusing
as the differences between some of the models are minimal.
However, we hope to highlight the main ones for you, which
should make a purchasing decision easier as you will be armed with
more information about the subtle changes. We can confirm that
the current iPads perform well, but your particular requirements may
mean that one model stands out above the rest and with the detail
included here, you should be able to find it and enjoy years of reliable
performance at home and when travelling.

iPad Pro

Slim and light

Takes your creativity and entertainment to a whole new scale

When the iPad Pro was unveiled, the Internet
was awash with mirth and images featuring
obscenely oversized iPads being used. But,
all joking aside, the iPad Pro is formidable
beast featuring an expansive 12.9-inch Retina
display, nearly double the CPU power of the
iPad Air 2 and all-new Multi-Touch technology
that allows you to work more efficiently and
take your entertainment to a whole new level.
So what of the Retina display? With 5.6
million pixels, the iPad Pro features the
highest-resolution display of any iOS device,
ever, and the expanded screen size means
that you can do so much more, from editing
videos to designing captivating presentations,
more easily and effectively. Everything is
powered by Apples new A9X 64-bit chip,
which offers desktop-standard performance
up to 1.8 times more powerful than the iPad
Air 2 and double the graphics performance
so even the most demanding apps run
smoothly without a hint of slowdown.
Of course, the device also ships with iOS
10 and all of the new multitasking features
that the operating system provides. You can
now run two apps at the same time, sideby-side on the same screen with Split-View,
effortlessly open a second app without
leaving the one you are currently using with
Slide Over and even scale down a FaceTime
or Video window to open a second app with
Picture in Picture mode. Its a more intuitive
way to use your device that provides all of the
freedom of a Mac computer with the mobility
of a tablet.
The icing on the cake comes with the
iPad Pros astonishingly slim and light design.
Although the device measures just 6.9mm
in depth and weighs 1.57 pounds, it feels
perfectly sturdy and well equipped to tackle
everything you throw at it. It also sounds
amazing too, thanks to four high-fidelity
speakers built directly into its body that can
blast out your movies and games, immersing
you in the experience like never before. Its a
serious piece of tech that will keep the iPad at
the pinnacle of tablet technology.

Utilising the very best of iOS 10

The giant screen of the iPad Pro is
perfectly suited to get the best out
of iOS 10s multitasking features. You
can keep multiple apps open and flick
between them at will and even use the
expansive screen real estate to open
two apps on the same screen (just
swipe from the side and select another
app to open). Best of all though is that
you dont have to cut short a FaceTime

tasks as you can simply scale down the
window and do what you need to do.

iPad Air 2
The iPad Air 2 represents the pinnacle of Apples amazing manufacturing ability
The iPad Air 2 is a classic example of a product
taking the best of the previous generation
and making all of the practical areas even
better than before. Some may see the subtle
improvements in the Air 2 as displaying a
lack of innovation, but those who use iPads
will fully understand the benefits that the
enhancements offer. The original Air was
designed to make the full-size iPad more
portable than ever before and at only 7.5mm
thick, it truly was. The fact that Apple has
shaved a further 1.4mm off the thickness does
not sound that impressive, but when you pick
it up and use it on a daily basis, the decreased
depth and weight are very noticeable. Indeed,

Quality snaps

Its so thin!
The 6.1mm depth on
the Air 2 is amazing
to look at and to
hold in the hand.
It really does feel
impossibly light

these subtle changes come together to offer

an emotional impact that is most unexpected
because the Air 2 feels like a sublime slab
of technology which belies all of the power
that is held within it. The rear camera has also
been improved and at 8 megapixels is now
capable of taking photographs that are worth
sharing and printing. And, despite the front
camera remaining the same as in the previous
model, you can enjoy taking stills and sharing
FaceTime conversations in excellent quality.
Just like the weight and depth improvements,
these camera upgrades offer more benefits
than you may expect because they take the
iPad photography experience to a whole

new level, which makes holding up a tablet

to capture a moment feel completely normal.
Touch ID is the final new feature, which is
also transformative thanks to the security it
offers and its incredible ease of use. Hold your
finger on the Home button for a second and
the Air 2 is unlocked, and you now also have
the peace of mind that simple passwords
cannot offer. If you are used to using a
TouchID iPhone, it is jarring to use an iPad
without it and so this simple addition solves
that problem forever more. The Air 2 may not
offer a myriad of new features, but it is a truly
staggering achievement in terms of how the
technology works in practice.

More new features

There are many other

advances included in the
iPad Air 2 which are not
present in the original
Air launched the year
before, and they all come
together to make the
user experience even
better. The inclusion of
2GB of RAM (previously
1GB) means that more
apps and games can run
at full speed at any one
time. The CPU and GPU
processors have been
upgraded as well, which
results in huge graphics
performance gains and
quicker performance
across the board. All of
this is in a thinner body
and the battery still
offers a highly impressive
10 hours of use per
charge. It really doesnt
get much better.

iPad mini 4

Desktop power

Small, perfectly formed and immensely powerful

When, on the one hand, youve got the
immense size of the iPad Pro and on the other
the small compactness of the iPad mini 4,
the question must surely be asked, is bigger
better or does petite prevail? The truth is that
there is an iPad for everyone and where the
iPad Pro meets the demands of the workers
head-on with its larger screen size and hike
in processing power to effortlessly handle
the big apps, the iPad mini 4 is perhaps
better suited to more casual tablet users who
crave peak performance in a small, more
manageable package.
Powered by the A8 second-generation
64-bit chipset, the iPad mini 4 hardly skimps
on the processing power as desktop-standard
performance is still assured, whether youre
checking emails or recording and constructing
your sonic opus in GarageBand. Some people
may find that the smaller, 7.9-inch Retina
display somewhat hampers the amount of
work they can carry out on the iPad mini 4,
which is why this device is better suited for
photos and fun. The 2048 x 1536 resolution
display (boasting 3.1 million pixels) is ideal for
watching movies, playing games and staying
up to date with social media. And then theres
the cameras.
The iPad mini 4s built-in iSight camera
delivers advanced optics, an improved sensor
and a freshly-designed signal processor, the
upshot being that all of your photos and
videos look incredibly vivid and benefit greatly
from a variety of built-in camera modes,
including panorama, time-lapse, slow-mo,
burst and timer. The front-facing FaceTime
HD camera has also been redesigned from
previous models of iPad with a refined sensor
and larger pixels, so it works even better and
more effectively in low-light conditions.
The iPad mini 4 also benefits from Touch
ID technology to turn your fingerprint into a
unique and unforgettable password, so you
can unlock your device, authorise payments
through iTunes and the App Store and use
Apple Pay simply by pressing your finger
down on the Home button.

Ever-ready for action

Featuring a 9.7-inch Retina display and driven by the

power-efficient A7, 64-bit chipset, the iPad Air may not
boast the colossal screen size and peak performance of
its bigger brothers in the iPad range, but it is still a fast
and highly capable tablet to suit a wide range of needs.
At just 7.5mm thin and weighing in at just a pound,
the device is easy to ferry around and great to whip out
when you fancy surfing the web through Safari, checking
your social media feeds, playing games or watching
movies. It is worth noting that not all of the new iOS 10
multitasking features are compatible with the iPad Air.
Picture in Picture and Slide Over modes are present but

iPad mini 3

A sturdy stop-gap

When this enhanced tablet entered the market, we werent exactly blown away by
the specifications when compared with the iPad mini 2. Certainly the most notable
addition was the inclusion of Touch ID, using a sensor housed in the Home button.
This made it instantly easier to secure your device and make purchases online with
Apple Pay. A great deal of third-party apps have also started to incorporate Apple
Pay as a way to purchase goods, so you dont have to worry about inputting your
payment details into numerous shopping apps and websites.
Sat awkwardly in no-mans land between the iPad mini 2 and 4 it is hard to find
other merits to recommend this model, but for many that will be enough.

iPad accessories
An iPad used with the right accessories can
become twice the machine

Smart Case

The Smart Case offers all of the protection you require

for your precious iPad. It covers the back of the tablet,
which can get scratched when moved on a flat surface,
and the clever front works as a stand when rolled up
to aid typing. It can also stand up to let you watch a
movie without even touching the iPad, but the smartest
function is the sleep/wake facility. Lift the cover and the
iPad will turn on and when you shut it, the iPad turns off.
It sounds simple, but it quickly becomes second nature
to use and it will also save battery power over time. The
slightly high price you pay for an Apple Smart Case turns
out to be well worth it after a short period of time.

Wireless drives

You can now purchase wireless drives which will supplement

the storage space your iPad includes by default. A very good
example is the SanDisk Connect 64GB Wireless Media Drive
which lets you store movies, music, photos and documents
locally to be accessed whenever you like using just your iPad. It
connects via Wi-Fi to the iPad, but this doesnt mean you need
a valid hotspot available because as long as the two devices can
see each other, they will work together seamlessly. The included
SD card slot also makes it perfect for sharing photos taken on a
non-connected camera to the iPad in seconds and there is one
final bonus in that it can be used with other devices as well.

A new keyboard

iPads are very powerful tablets that are

capable of complex tasks, but for many uses
a laptop can be more practical. The addition,
however, of a dedicated keyboard for your
iPad can completely change the way you
use it every day. Some of the third-party
keyboards come with built-in cases that will
stand exactly like a laptop in use and almost
all of them offer dedicated hardware keys to
control specific aspects of the iPad without
touching the screen. Potentially, the addition
of a keyboard could be the biggest change
you make to your iPad because it increases its
versatility exponentially. It could be time to say
goodbye to your bulky, limited laptop forever.

Ultimate guide to iPad

Apple Pencil

Its taken a mighty long time but Apple has finally released an attractive stylus and this one is
designed to work with the iPad Pro, to complete that executive package. Designed to be perfectly
in tune with the multitasking features in iOS 10, the Apple Pencil feels instantly intuitive and works
exactly as you expect it to, with laser efficiency. The subsystem scans the signal of the device 240
times per second, providing it with twice as many data points as your finger. The result is incredible
responsiveness with no noticeable lag from your eye to the screen. As you experiment with using
the device you will discover that the pressure sensitive nib serves up a myriad of possibilities.

Stand it up

The idea of a desktop stand for an iPad is not a natural one, but
once you use one you will wonder how you managed without it.
If you purchase a stand for your iPad, you will be able to keep it
charged when you are working at a desk and also use your iPad for
background tasks that you may not have previously considered.
Favourite photos can be streamed over the screen as you work
and you can also leave playlists of music playing while viewing the
album art. News and weather can be updated on the screen and
these are just the tip of the iceberg. A stand can also keep your
iPad in a much safer position where it is less likely to get damaged.

New headphones

iPads do not come supplied with Apple headphones, but they

offer excellent audio quality when used to play music and
movies. You can enhance this even further with a high-quality
pair of headphones and there are literally hundreds available
to suit the way the iPad works. You do not need to spend a
fortune to enjoy excellent audio quality and your personal
tastes will be a major factor in choosing what works best for
you, but the general rule is that spending a little more will offer
many benefits. Also, dont forget that you may want to use your
headphones for FaceTime calls and audio-enhanced gaming as
well, so a decent pair will be advantageous for these uses.

No limits!

There is no limit to what you can do with an iPad and the vast
range of available accessories for specialist tasks take the flexibility
ever further. Music creation can be supplemented with keyboards
and rigs that let you mix the songs you create. Camera stands let
you take time-lapse photographs and you can even buy styluses
which work like paintbrushes to let you create stunning works of
art. Microscopes, game controllers, remote-control cars, drones and
many other varied accessories are available for your iPad to make
it one of the most important and useful devices you could own.
An iPadmarried to the best accessories can become the computer
you always dreamed of.

2: Time to delete

3: Retrieve the app

Long-press on any app icon as

it will no longer appear on the

It will appear with a download
arrow, which when tapped will
immediately return the app to the

Use effects
& animations
in Messages

Strange
messages
If you send an effect to
someone who is not using
iOS 10, they will see a small
message such as (sent with
Shooting Star) in place of the
actual effect. It makes for
a good compromise.

Add some personality to your

outgoing messages in iOS 10
Messages is now about
much more than mere
words thanks to a variety of
animations and effects you
can add to your outgoing
communications. Apple has cleverly
incorporated personal features that take
over the entire screen when the message

is received, but then disappear to

leave you to deal with the important
stuff. The system retains a sense of
simplicity throughout while
integrating these exciting new
features, and it takes no time at all to
learn how to use them. Its great fun,
intuitive and highly effective.

1: Activate the effects

2: View text animation field

3: Choose colours

Tap on the right arrow icon to the left

of the text field and you will see three
icons appear. Tap the middle icon that
represents a heart with two fingers
resting on top.

This will bring up a space for you

to write onscreen and animate your
posts. Tap on the small up icon in the
lower-right corner of the screen to
make this mode full-screen.

Tap on one of the various colours to

change it and then you can write in
freehand in the space provided to add
a bit more personality and spark to
your text messages.

4: Send animations

5: Record sequences

6: Send audio messages

You can also perform gestures on the

screen to create certain animations.
For example, pressing and holding
will create an explosive effect and
releasing will instantly send it.

Tap on the video camer aicon to

record footage or take pictures in-app
and then add animations over the top
of them. Learn what gestures create
which animations.

Dont forget that you can still record

audio messages in-app by pressing
and holding on the mic icon. It no
longer automatically sends when you
stop recording, which is better.

Download
Messages
apps
Add greater flexibility
to your conversations
Apps are being developed that add
more variety to what you can send in
Messages and despite the list being
currently small, it is likely to grow
exponentially in the future.

1: View the apps

Tap the App Store icon in Messages
and you will immediately see all of the
available options that are installed.
Now tap the Store icon to access
more messaging apps.

2: Have a browse
Take a look at the available apps,
make your selection and download the
ones you want. Try to be selective so
as not to overload the interface with
too many messaging apps.

3: Use the apps

You can now use each app
whenever you want by tapping the
App Store icon when creating a new
message. The choices you now have
are numerous.

Emojify your messages

Choose an extensive array of emojis to express yourself
The standard
array of emojis
has been
expanded in iOS
10, all of which
can be accessed
by tapping the
globe icon on the
keyboard. You can
also download
new sets from
the App Store,
but just how do
you access those
emojis in-app?

1: Tap the Store icon

2: Express yourself

While in Messages, tap the right arrow

icon next to the text field and then
choose the Store icon from the set of
three icons that appear. Now tap on a
downloaded emoji set.

You will now be able to choose

emoji icons from the sets that you
downloaded. Swipe left to cycle
through all of your various sets of
downloaded emojis.

Handwrite a message
Send your handwriting for an added personal touch
You can now
send temporary
messages in your
own handwriting,
which makes
for a much
more personal
experience. It
takes a little bit of
practice to get to
grips with, but its
a fun alternative
to the standard
text fonts that
you can use.

1: Open the panel

2: Pre-written messages

When in a text conversation, tap the

calligraphy icon on the keyboard and a
large blank panel will appear. You can
now freely write in this space using
your finger or stylus.

If you tap on the small clock icon then

you can also bring up a selection
of pre-written messages that you
can send. Select one and it will
automatically be added to a message.

Annotate messages with Markup

Add some clarity to images you share in Messages
You can now
markup images
in Messages, just
as you can in
Photos, without
ever needing to
leave the app. It
means that the
app becomes a
lot more flexible
and potentially
useful for workrelated tasks as
well as for more
personal tasks.

1: Select an image

2: Use the tools

Tap the left arrow and then the camera

icon while composing a message.
Choose an image and you will see a
preview panel appear. Tap the image
and then select Markup.

Select the tools at the bottom of the

screen to annotate each image. For
example, arrows can be recreated
perfectly as the app will recognise
what you have drawn.

Create a
video of your
Memories
Let your phone generate
video memories for you
Creating videos on a mobile has
historically been time-consuming
and complex at best, but in iOS 10
you can have your memories set in
motion with no effort at all.

Search intelligently
with Photos
Let iOS 10 do the hard
work when photo searching
In iOS 10, the Photos app has
been improved in a variety of
ways, but one of the most
useful new features is the ability
to find photos based on almost any search
phrase you use. The only limit to the system
is your imagination, and if you can throw off
the limits you have been used to in the past,
you should be able to find any photo you
want no matter how old it is. We shall now
give some examples of it in use.

1: Create new folder

Select some photos and then use the
sharing icon at the top to add to an
album. Select New Album and then
give it a name of your choosing. Now
open the album.

2: Add to Memories
At the top of the Albums screen, tap
the date line and then scroll down
below the photos. Now tap Add to
Memories and then hit the Memories
icon at the bottom of the screen.

3: A created video
When you tap the memory that relates
to your album, you will see a video at
the top. Tap play, pause it and then
use the editing tools to change the
music and general theme.

22 The iPad Book

1: Just one tap

2: Find anything

Tap the magnifying glass at the top of the

Albums screen to initiate a search of your
photo library. Everything about this process is
obvious and intuitive in use.

Type in the phrase you want to search with

and a selection of results will be displayed
immediately. You really can use any phrase
you like to gain accurate instant results.

3: View the results

4: Use your imagination

Tap the folder of results to see all of the

photos that relate to your search phrase. It
really is uncanny how accurate the system is
and you will likely be very impressed with the
results that it throws up.

The final step is to let fly with whatever comes

to mind and to expect great things. From
animals to tennis shoes, specific dates to
people, iOS 10 Photos can find it
all instantly.

better now

As you make changes, they will

be visible throughout the process
so that you can be sure the
improvements really are better than

Undo your changes

At any point you can revert back
to the original and remove any
changes you have made. This will
give you the confidence to be more
daring with your edits

Classic tools remain

All of the editing features from
previous versions remain, with a
couple of new features added to
complete the feature set. It still
feels familiar and easy to use

Markup

Annotate any image
in clear detail within
Photos
You can quickly
annotate any photo
directly within the
Photos app by
tapping one icon.
Here you will see all of the
available tools that support
annotations, which means that
you can make lots of changes all
in the one app. Its highly efficient
and works extremely well.

1: Select an image

2: Time to play

3: Make it professional

While viewing a photo, tap the

edit icon to start tweaking it.
Next, tap on the round icon
with the in the middle and
then choose the Markup
option from the menu that
appears. Now get to work

You can now play with all

of the tools and we would
suggest to experiment with
each to see what works
best with the image you are
annotating. You can zoom in
for finer detail.

The text and font tools are

useful for adding a sense of
professionalism to the end
result, offering the potential
for annotations that can
be eventually be used in
presentation slides.

Apple
Music

With 3D Touch now

strongly integrated in Apple
Music, you can delete
tracks or add them to
playlists in an instant. Its subtle
in practice, but extremely
useful for managing all of
your songs.

The app has

become much
more streamlined
than before

The visuals remain

Despite the larger-than-average text,
album art is used where appropriate
to add a splash of much-needed
colour. The balance has been struck
very well here

Big text

Your tracks

Apple has greatly increased the size

of the text in the Apple Music app to
make every function more obvious
than previously. The interface is very
clean and works perfectly

Your downloaded tracks are now

separated more obviously so that you
can easily avoid costly data charges
when playing music on the move. It
serves locally stored tracks very well

Just for you

Stream any track

The For You tab is designed to remove

much of the complexity from the
previous version and is designed to
bring you closer to musicians you
want to follow

Many of the original features

remain, such as the streaming Radio
functionality, which can be used even
if you do not have an active Apple
Music subscription

Access your
downloaded
music
Its now easier than ever
to search Apple Music
Downloaded songs almost
got lost when Apple Music
was introduced because
the focus on streaming
was visually overwhelming. In the latest
version, however, things have changed
and you now have the ability to deal
with all of your locally stored tracks and
albums in a more logical fashion.

Any track that has been

downloaded will play
immediately thanks to its
locally stored stature. All
album art will also be stored
locally on your iOS device for
greater efficiency.

Purchased tracks and those

in your library can also be
downloaded to your iOS
device. The main thing to be
aware of here is the amount of
storage space the tracks can
take up.

Pay in Safari
Enjoy the efficiency of Apple Pay when browsing
Apple Pay has proved
to be incredibly quick,
highly secure and
potentially a much
better payment solution in physical stores
than any other. Its a sign of just how much
thought Apple put into the system, and the
way it works with the fingerprint sensor

shows that the long-term plan has worked

to perfection. The only omission, however,
has been the ability to make payments on
the web using Apple Pay, so to date we
have had to put up with inputting a lot of
personal information into multiple websites
and sending card details to unknown
servers. This has all changed in iOS 10.

2: One more

A small pane
appears giving
you the choice

3: The email

see a message
included that
shows your
unsubscribe

give all the details you need to be sure
it was sent to the right place.

4: A better
method
Not every
email can be
unsubscribed
from, so youll
need to use
the traditional
method now
and again. It
feels slow in comparison.

26 The iPad Book

3: Check details

Historically you had to check

and will require an account
to make a purchase. This
long process changes greatly

Sites that support Apple Pay

will include the magic Apple
Pay logo, which should be
tappable. When you tap it, you
will be prompted to choose a
card and use your fingerprint.

All of the information you need

to remain secure should be
presented, because Apple has
required a specific interface
to allow Apple Pay to be used.
You are always protected.

Get to know Settings

The way you handle the Settings available on an
iPad can completely change how reliable and
personal to you it is in daily use

Make the
iPad truly
personal
to you in
Settings

You might think that the Settings app would

contain a spattering of options to change specific
features of the iPad, but it actually presents you
with a huge list of options which contain further settings
within them. The list has grown over time and can be
confusing at first, but the best advice is to take a long look at
what is available and to then only change what you need to.
The number of options will also expand as you install new apps
because many will push their individual settings to the main
Settings panel, so that is something to be aware of if you are
struggling to make changes in an app. Here, we will highlight
the most useful settings and also show you how to navigate
through the long lists, but each person will have different
requirements, so spend as much time as you can making the
iPad truly personal to you in Settings. For quick changes when
in an app or game, you can use the Control Centre accessed
by swiping up from the bottom of the screen so in theory
you will only need to access Settings occasionally. It is now time
to get a glimpse of what is available in Settings, and you may
be surprised at how beneficial the options are.

Settings Understand the iPad Settings

1: Understand your iPad

2: The display

3: Deeper settings

Go to Settings, tap General in the left panel,

then About. You can now view advanced
information about your iPad, including amount
of storage available and serial numbers.

Tap on Display & Brightness in the left panel

and make sure the Auto-Brightness button is
green. This will provide the optimum brightness
setting in all lighting conditions.

Some settings offer more options within them.

For example, the Mail, Contacts or Calendar
setting offers a myriad of preferences to tweak
to your specific requirements.

Customise Touch ID on your iPad

Add and rename extra fingerprints to keep your iPad as secure as possible
Now that Touch ID is
available on the iPad
Air 2 and mini 4, its
easier than ever before to secure
your device against potential
thieves, or mischievous friends
that you dont want accessing
your information. The best news
of all is that its just so easy to set
up youre prompted to add a
fingerprint when you first activate
your device, but you can add
up to five individual prints if you
want to make unlocking your
device more natural. And for even
greater security, you can then add

Touch ID

a complex passcode, made up

of numbers and letters, on top
of your prints, to make it even
harder for people to break into
your device. Read on to get all our
security tips, so you can rest easy
knowing that nobody unwanted
is going to be able to gain access
your personal files.

For even greater

security, you can add
a passcode, made up
of numbers and letters,
on top of your prints

Customise Touch ID settings

1: Switch it on

2: Add a code

3: Help it learn

Open Settings, and select the Touch ID &

Passcode option from the list. Switch on the
option that says Use Touch ID for iPad unlock,
and add a fingerprint when prompted.

Youll also have to add a security passcode;

when you restart your iOS device, you will need
to input the code the first time you unlock,
rather than using Touch ID.

When you touch the Touch ID sensor with a

finger that your device has learned, it will be
highlighted in the list. This actually helps it learn
your print, so keep doing it!

4: Whats in a name?

5: Multiple fingers

6: Add more names

Tap on the name of the fingerprint by default

Finger 1 or Finger 2 and youll be taken to
this screen, where you can give each one a
specific name to help you keep track.

You can add up to five fingers to the Touch ID

section, so you can either add different fingers
from your own hands, or fingers of different
people if there are multiple users.

For each fingerprint, you can change the name

so that you will always know which finger is
which. This will make things easier if you ever
need to remove a print.

Five fingers

You can use Touch ID to unlock your device,

or to authenticate purchases through the App

to make it easier to sign in, and Apple Pay users
in America will need it set up to use the service

You can add up to five fingers, but they

could all theoretically be the same finger if
you wished. It would hugely improve the
scanning accuracy for that single finger, but
you wouldnt be able to add any others

Erase iPad
At the bottom of the Touch ID & Passcode
menu is an Erase iPad option. By switching
this on, your iPad will be erased if the incorrect
passcode is entered ten times in a row. If you
are concerned about thieves accessing your
information, this isnt a bad idea, but bear
in mind that anyone could enter random
numbers ten times just to erase your iPad,
which would be very annoying.

You can now type a passcode of any length

that includes letters and numbers this
is much more secure than a standard
passcode, but will take longer to enter.

If you switch to the numbers keyboard

and only enter numbers as your complex
passcode, the unlock screen will only show
the number pad, rather than a full keyboard.

This will allow you to unlock your device

more quickly, as you should be able to do it
with one hand. When youve typed in your

Contacts

You may think that keeping a contacts list is an easy

thing to do and it certainly can be if all you need is
an accurate listing of your friends and colleagues.
However, if you want more, the standard iPad Contacts app
is more than capable of providing it. You can set up as many
groups as you need and separate your acquaintances into
logical listings, which will speed up your people finding every
single day. With groups you can still access all of your contacts
with one tap if needed, which is handy, and you can even
link contacts together to share data. For example, if you have
accidentally created a duplicate of one person, simply use
the link contacts option and they will magically merge
into one contact. iCloud completes the set of features and is
actually required to create groups, but it offers so many more
advantages that it would be foolhardy to ignore it, especially
considering its free. The personal approach of the Contacts
app makes it easy to understand and use, but it is capable of
being used in business and at no point will overcomplicate
the process. We will show you how to get all of your contacts
organised and fortunately the process is surprisingly easy.

The Messages app probably benefitted the most

from the recent iOS 10 update, with a raft of cool
new features made available to iPad users. Of
course, you can still send text messages quickly and easily, but
you can now express yourself in new and imaginative ways
thanks to Digital Touch mode and downloadable emoticons.
Digital Touch allows you to perform on-screen gestures to

FaceTime with friends

Change the way you contact friends and family, and
make the entire experience more personal. You can
also save money when using FaceTime

Video calling
makes the
experience
so much
fun and
verypersonal
FaceTime

FaceTime is an fantastic app in that it only offers

benefits and no downsides at all that we are aware
of. You can use Wi-Fi to make and receive calls and
this of course will decrease your mobile call spend, and you can
also use it for audio calls. Again, the audio calls can use Wi-Fi
and the resultant call quality is much better than you would
receive over a mobile network. It is, however, video calling that
makes the experience so much fun and very personal. If you are
speaking to family members who live some distance away or
simply chatting to friends before a night out, there is something
special about doing it face to face and standard audio calling
never feels quite the same again. Even better, the setup process
for FaceTime is minimal and you can start using it straight
away, but you may need to manage which numbers and email
addresses you are using to avoid confusion when making and
receiving calls. We will detail the simple process and give you
some pointers for the on-screen controls while making calls,
and within minutes you will be enjoying a whole new way of
communicating. Once you start using FaceTime, you wont stop
because it really does change every conversation for the better.

Communicate in style

1: Set it up

2: Who to call?

3: Start the conversation

Go to FaceTime in the Settings app and tick

the numbers or email addresses that you want
to use with FaceTime. Tick only one of each to
avoid confusion between devices.

Open the FaceTime app and a list of contacts

will display in a column. Tap any of these
contacts and select a number or email address
to make a call.

The call will initiate and you will see the dialling
dialogue at the top of the screen. Wait for the
call to connect and remember that occasionally
it can take time.

applies to FaceTime Audio,

iOS 10 widgets
One of the new features introduced with iOS 10
is the addition of widgets to your iPads Spotlight

Widgets

key features
of certain
apps

Although widgets have been a feature of the

Android operating system for a while, they have
now been introduced to your iPad as part of the
iOS 10 update. Widgets allow you to use and experience key
features of certain apps without launching the actual app itself.
For example, you can view the latest headlines in the News app,
see whats up next in the Calendar app, see whats nearby in
the Maps app and so on. Many of your iPads bolt-on apps will
carry their own widgets, but some third-party apps will also
supply them and you have full freedom to activate whichever
widgets you want and even change the order in which they
appear on your Spotlight search screen.
To start using your iOS 10 widgets, simply swipe to the right
from the Home or Lock screen and the Spotlight search screen
will appear complete with the default widgets in the default
order (appearing in two columns if viewed in the landscape
orientation). You can change them and re-arrange them simply
by scrolling down and hitting Edit, as demonstrated here.

Siri can help you in an endless number of ways,
and in a style that feels personal, efficient and even
friendly. Its remarkably effective

You can

your iPad
and Siri will
understand
Siri

Siri is a brilliant invention from Apple and can be

used for much more than you might expect. We will
highlight some of the more popular and lesser known
features, but the best advice is to just speak to Siri and see
what answers you get back. Web searches are built in and Siri
is also capable of interacting with many default apps including
Maps, Contacts and Calendar. However, it is the way that Siri
works that is most impressive: you can speak naturally and it will
understand you. The more you use it, the more accurately it will
recognise your voice and over time youll find yourself speaking
to it just as you would a friend. Dont ever feel restricted by
what you believe it can or cannot do think of anything and
chances are that Siri will understand and respond in exactly the
way you want it to. The advantages of the system will be crucial
to those who require the accessibility help, but we can think
of very few people who would not benefit from the way Siri
works. It is one of those rare systems that gets better the more
you use it, and it works very well from the start anyway.

Get more from Siri

1: Get the weather

2: Manage hardware

3: Working with other apps

Asking Siri for weather information is

surprisingly natural. Say something like What
will the weather be like in Brighton tomorrow?
or Do I need an umbrella? to send the request.

You can control many hardware features in Siri

by simply asking. Turn on Bluetooth is enough
to switch it on immediately and the same
applies to Wi-Fi and other features.

Siri is woven into the fabric of your other apps,

including Music. So you can ask Siri to find you
new songs by a particular artist and the Music
app will launch and load the required page.

Siri also has the ability to
control hardware features.
You can turn Bluetooth and
other connections on and
off using natural language

4: Check the sports results

5: Roll a die/flip a coin

6: Ask anything

Siris abilities are quite extensive and you can

even ask if a sports team that you follow won.
You will be presented with the result from the
respective teams last game.

Siri even works for the simpler things, such as if

you have mislaid a die for your favourite board
game or if you want to make a decision on the
flip of a coin, but dont have one!

For a more detailed run down of other things

you can ask Siri, tap the small ? icon and you

One of the welcome new enhancements specifically to
Safari is the introduction of ad-blockers, third-party applications
that you can toggle on or off in Safaris settings to ensure that
your web experience isnt tainted by intrusive ads. Apart from
this, Safari remains unchanged from before, although the new
keyboard layout makes it easier to type keywords into search
engines and generally hurtle around the web at a much faster
speed. Here we take a look at the apps other, older, essential

Use your iPad for longer

The iPad naturally offers impressive battery life, but you
can make it perform for even longer between charges
with a few simple tweaks

There
are many
tweaks you
can make
to increase
battery life
System

The iPads battery performance will easily get you

through a busy day, but theres still a lot you can do
to increase it further. If you consider that the screen
and wireless connections are the two main battery hogs and
if you manage these two areas well, the benefits will become
obvious immediately. We will show you how to manage these
to increase power and also the areas that can be tweaked to
offer even more battery life between charges. There are many
tweaks you can make to increase battery life and not all of them
are obvious, but when combined you have the ability to add
an hour or two of use every day, which will be advantageous if
you are often away from a power source. Some of these tweaks
require proactive management which can take a little time in
the initial stages, but the fairly recent addition of the Control
Centre means that you can also make changes in seconds
should your situation require it. If you think logically about your
requirements and take advantage of the advice offered here,
your iPad could become a much more usable device overnight
and you may even be able to avoid upgrading to a newer
model. Its time to manage your iPad battery effectively.

Optimise your iPad battery

1: Automatic brightness

2: Display time out

3: Use Wi-Fi

Use Auto-Brightness to set the display to work

at the perfect balance between visibility and
power efficiency. Go to Settings>Display &
Brightness and tap the switch to turn it on.

Go to Settings>Display & Brightness>Auto-Lock

and then select either 2 minutes or 5 minutes
to dim the screen earlier when not in use. This
will save a great deal of battery power.

If your iPad has cellular access, try to use Wi-Fi in

place of 3G/4G as much as possible. Wi-Fi uses
less power than a mobile network connection
due to the latters signal fluctuations.

4: Set Airplane Mode

5: Close unnecessary apps

6: Background app refreshing

the email retrieval to Manual to save lots of
power immediately.

In Settings>General>Accessibility set Reduce

Motion to On and Zoom to Off. Removing
these unnecessary visual tricks will have a
positive effect on your power usage.

10: Reduce your apps

11: Turn Bluetooth off

12: Do Not Disturb

Reducing the number of apps you have

installed on your iPad will not only save storage
space, but also help preserve power. Try to only
install apps and games you need.

You may only need to use Bluetooth

occasionally for connecting to a keyboard or
other accessories, so try disabling it at all other
times. It can drain power quite quickly.

Enabling Airplane Mode overnight will save

the most power, but going to Settings>Do

away from
iTunes
Family Sharing

Youve always been able to use one Apple ID as the

main account for multiple iPads and iPhones, and
it has worked well, but it can lead to confusion and
even annoyance as purchases are shared between people.
Family Sharing, a great feature from Apple, is designed to
take those problems away by letting you use one account for
payments and so benefit from using an app or song on more
than one device, but it includes a degree of separation by using
different Apple IDs for family members. You will see when we
explain the process that theres not much to learn here and that
it will work for you consistently without you needing to think
about what is happening, and your children will be able to feel
like individuals as you can set up new accounts for them. You
can use Family Sharing to set limits on what your children can
buy and what they are allowed to view, and you can also share
calendars and even create new online photo albums together.
Family Sharing takes all of the hassle away from iTunes and
will help you organise multiple family member accounts and
devices without even thinking about the process. It may not
gain as much attention as other features, but it works well.

Keep your purchases separate

1: Find the options

2: Follow the screens

3: Invite a member

Go to Settings and select iCloud in the left

column. Now look for the Set Up Family
Sharing option and tap it. All of the relevant
settings are held here.

You now need to tap through a series of

warning screens to ensure that you are happy
with everything Family Sharing offers. Read
every screen to be sure.

At the Add Family Member screen, enter their

Apple ID (email address) and then send the
invitation to them. You can also ask for them to

iCloud Backup

iCloud Backup is a feature that could easily be

classed as essential for anyone who owns an iPad.
It is exceptionally easy to set up and Apple offers 5GB
of free online storage that you can utilise by simply creating
an Apple ID. When a backup is performed, it will take care of
every important piece of data that you need to keep safe, from
messages to apps preferences to game progress. Physical apps
are not backed up, but the fact that you own them is, and
when you restore through iCloud to a new device, they will be
automatically installed as part of the process. A restore will bring
back 100 per cent of your personal information and the device
will look identical to the way it was before. This means that a
stolen iPad will not cause you to lose any precious data and
the same applies if you suffer a major system failure. If you take
the time to set up iCloud Backup to cover the apps and data
you need, it will run invisibly in the background every day and
you will always have peace of mind knowing that everything is
stored securely. It is often true that your data is more valuable
than your hardware, so you really should keep it safe just in case
the worst happens.

Retrain Siri to
understand you better
If Siri doesnt comprehend you, it is easy to reset
the relationship and start again

Enjoy a
whole
new Siri
experience
that is more
accurate than
ever before
Siri

Siri is an extremely clever personal assistant

and if you take the time to use it fully, you will
definitely benefit in a variety of ways.
There are times, however, when Siri starts to lose the
recognition of your voice and, if we are honest, the reasons
for this are unclear. This will not be the end of the world
though because there is an easy way to retrain Siri to
understand your voice again by resetting what it has learnt
so far in order to improve your usage in the future.
There are many other ways to improve Siri recognition,
but it is fair to say that it will improve the more you use it
for the vast majority of people, and you should be able
to speak naturally every single time. Follow our tutorial if
you are struggling to reset Siri and you will likely be able
to enjoy a whole new Siri experience that is more accurate
than ever before. It only takes a few minutes to reset Siri
completely, and its well worth doing if youre going to
use Siri frequently or will be starting to do so soon. It wont
take long, and before you know it, you will feel like you are
talking to an old friend.

Give Siri some extra training

1: Reset Siri

2: Get to the set-up screen

3: Time to respond

Turn your iOS device off and back on, and head
to Settings>Siri. Disable the Allow Hey Siri
option and then enable it again to start the
learning procedure from scratch.

The set-up screen appears, which confirms

that everything has been reset to the point
you would see when setting up a new device.
Everything in this tutorial should feel familiar.

Siri will ask you to say Hey Siri for the first
time. Make sure you are in a quiet environment
because the more nuances the system hears,
the more accurately it will work.

Do anything
with Siri

Add family
members
Telling Siri who your family
members are will help speed
up future recognition for many
common tasks. Simply say
something like Joanne is my
wife and Siri will search your
contacts database to find the
name, at which point you will be
able to say Text my wife in the
future and Siri will know who
you are talking about.

Heres how Siri

can help you
every day
Use Siri for numbers
You can use Siri to replace built-in
apps such as the Calculator, but it does
need to understand you in order to
undertake complex calculations and
deal with very large numbers

Dealing with names

Names may also need to be spoken
more clearly, but for most common
monikers you should not come across
any problems. Siri will scan your
contacts database and perform the
task requested

Speak clearly
For some words, such
as city names, you may
need to be more phonetic
in the way you speak. It
wont take long for Siri to
understand when you
need to speak more clearly

Visual indicators
For some tasks Siri will offer panels to show
what the result of your query or task is. This is
useful for ensuring that alarms or text messages
have been completed as you require

4: Repeat for success

5: Say something complex

6: Use Siri

You may be asked to repeat certain phrases, but

it is worth taking your time with this as it will
mean far greater recognition. You should also
only need to perform this training once.

The process will continue by asking you for

a slightly more complex phrase. When you
consider that the general accuracy of Siri is
high, this set-up process is quite short.

You will be advised when the process has

completed and you are now ready to use
Siri by either holding down the Home button
or saying Hey Siri.

Notes

The Notes app on iOS has long been a source of

frustration for Apple users. While it is a functional
tool that allows you to jot down lists and things to
remember, it has traditionally been a basic, bare bones app. The
iOS 9 update brought great changes to Notes, giving users a
raft of extra functions, such as the ability to format your notes
and write in different colours. You can also add in photos and
other handy memory aids, transforming your notes from bland
documents to vibrant, interesting lists. Although many people
will just want to use it to write down an address or a booking
reference number, there are plenty of times where a range of
options will prove useful to people using Notes. The addition of
a photograph can be a much better memory jogger than just
text and it will stop the need to send photographs separately.
Lets also not overlook the fact that doodling away on your
phone is a lot more entertaining, too. This tutorial will take you
through the steps of changing the fonts and formatting of
your notes as well as instructing you on how to add in extra
attachments, such as photos.

are nearby places of interest
(as supplied by your recently
enhanced iOS 10 Maps app) and
the latest news articles that are
trending in your local area.
It is also worth knowing that Siri
can power your Spotlight search,
providing even more answers
when you start typing keywords
into the search field. But then who
needs to waste time typing? Just
hit the microphone icon and talk
to Siri for all your search needs.

Finding app and web information

1: Find nearby places

2: Check the weather

3: Look up sports scores

If your current location is supported by the

Nearby feature of your iOS 10 Maps app then a
selection of categories for nearby places will be
instantly available on your search screen.

Of course your can simply use your Weather

app, but if youre on the search screen anyway,
type Weather and you will be able to instantly
see the weather where you are and more.

If you type in the name of your favourite sports

teams the score of the respective teams most
recent match will be displayed along with other
related news and websites.

4: Open a website

5: Discover Wikipedia entries

6: Skip to iTunes

Spotlight recognises many popular websites. So

when you type a word in its search bar, it will
look for a suggested website tapping on the
result will open it in Safari.

Spotlight now integrates Wikipedia into its

results. When you type a term, it will look for
entries on the online encyclopedia, displaying a
small image and a brief summary.

As well as showing you Wikipedia entries and

web results, searching for a musician, album,
song, TV show or podcast will display the
relevant media from the iTunes Store.

Microsoft Word

A recent update to Microsofts Office apps enables

you to create documents for free as long as you
have a Microsoft account (Xbox Live or Windows8
login email account will do). The functionality and features
share a strong resemblance to the desktop equivalent and
the app has been adapted to the iPads multi-touch controls
perfectly. It has plenty of formatting options so you can create
professional-looking documents on the fly. In the tutorial well
show how to do this, though most of the options should be
easy to work out if youve used the desktop version before.
A good tip is to use the pre-installed templates and edit the
default text and images to suit your own needs. A downside
to the app is that it saves in the new .docx format and certain
features, such as tracking changes, require an Office 365
subscription (from 7/$8 a month). However, most docs can be
opened and converted with the formatting left intact. You can
even open them from a OneDrive or Dropbox account or work
offline as long as youve initially signed in online.

Create and format a document

1: Microsoft account sign-in

2: Create a new document

3: Choosing a style

Swipe through the intro tabs and tap Sign In,

or create a new account. Follow the wizard
and, when prompted, enter your email address
(associated with your account) and password.

Once you have signed in, tap Create and Edit

Design simple but striking digital business cards on your iPad

The iPad certainly
isnt just a device for
fun apps like Pages,
Numbers and Keynote, as well
as the Microsoft Office suite,
make it just as good for business
as it is for entertainment.
And one of the things it does
particularly well is design work;
the iPads touchscreen is perfect
for combining images and text,
and Pages is a great place to do
just that. Plus, with the brilliant
selection of built-in templates,
you can create all kinds of projects
within a few seconds.

Pages

If youre one of those using your

iPad for work, you can even use
it to make your own business
cards. Whether you want to print
the design or hand it out digitally,
Pages has everything you need
to make your card a reality, from
professional-looking templates
to editing tools that let you get
creative. Heres how it works.

You can create all

kinds of amazing
projects in Pages
within a few seconds

Design custom business cards

1: Pick a template

2: Customise

3: Change fonts

Tap the + button in the top-left and choose

to create a new document, then scroll down
to see the options for pre-made business card
templates for you to start with.

You can start to customise the design youve

picked, moving elements around and altering
the colours of the included templates, like lines
and boxes, to fit your colour scheme.

Start playing with the fonts, too. Not every

design will have the perfect font included
automatically, so select the text, then tap in the
control bar to select a new one.

4: Add images

5: Make it personal

6: Get creative

You dont have to add images to your card to

make it look good, but they can add a personal
touch. Tap the + button and choose your
image from the Media browser.

Everyone has business cards, so youll need to

add something personal to make yours stand
out from the masses. Add a photo of yourself, a
quote or something similar.

If you can come up with a great idea it will only

help make your name stand out from a pile
of other cards. Spend time playing with your
design to create something memorable.

Printing

Before you start your design, take a look

in your sector. Dont copy them, but get
inspired by the best ones and try to come up
with something unique and eye-catching

Remember that you can use AirPrint from

your iOS device to print your cards directly,
or share them via iCloud with your Mac or
PC to print them from another device with
more controls for printing options

Saving an image file

Its not straightforward to save your
document as an image in Pages, so instead
simply zoom in on your card and grab a
screenshot with your iOS device. In the
Photos app you can crop it down to the
perfect size, ready to share, but the quality
of the image will still be high thanks to the
Retina display.

Double-sided

double-sided,
create another

using the same

template. Then,
when you print,
put the sheet back
into the printer
and print the back
from the second
document

Depending on the
business you are
in, you may need
different styles
of card. Simple,
minimalist cards are
great, but bright
colours and bold
fonts can help your
name stand out
in other situations

8: Make it visual

9: Export for sharing

If youre designing a card that youre going to

You dont need to make several as youre not

conversations, so make it visual to make sure
that it stands out from the crowd.

When youre finished, tap the Share button in

The built-in apps on your Apple device work

perfectly with the hardware and are optimised
to take full advantage of the operating system.
So while alternatives like Microsofts Office suite are still worth
a look, Apples own iWork apps offer similar functionality,
complete compatibility and a much nicer interface. Also, since
the iWork apps are designed to work the same on Mac and iOS,
you wont be frustrated by missing features. But Apple knows
that many people still use Microsoft Office, and it has therefore
made it quick and easy to import and edit Microsoft files using
iWork apps. You can continue to enjoy the improved interface
of iWork on your iPad without having to transfer to a Mac or PC
to work on a full version of Office. And better still, when youre
finished with editing your work, you can export it as an XLS file
so that your friends and colleagues can pick it up where you left
off, no matter what app theyre using. Lets get started and find
out how to import and edit Excel files in the Numbers app.

Edit Excel documents in Numbers

1: Open in Numbers

2: Edit formulae

3: Add functions

When you receive an Excel document, it will

appear like this in the email or message. Tap

Create a simple but effective monthly spreadsheet using Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel is part
of the Office suite of
apps that you can
download for free. It lets you
create effective spreadsheets
with formulas, albeit not as many
as the desktop version as long
as you have a Microsoft account,
although certain options require
an Office 365 subscription (from

we showcase how to set up a
monthly spreadsheet to keep track
of your expenditure. The process
of using the app is very intuitive
thanks to the interface adapting

Microsoft Excel

perfectly to the iPads multi-touch

controls. It also bears a similarity
to the Excel desktop version, with
the core layout comprising a series
of rows and columns that you can
use to input values and then add
or multiply them together using
formulas. The latter require an
understanding of maths and logic,
but once set up they will speed up
the process of calculating figures.
For example, =SUM(B1:B8)*0.04
will add up whats in cells B1 to B8
and then multiply this by 0.04 to
get a total. Dont worry, the tutorial
will showcase formulas in action.

2: Basic formatting

3: Advanced formatting

Tap Done to bypass the Whats New window,

then tap New Blank Workbook. Double-tap cell
A1, type Monthly Expenditure 2014 and then
select the green tick on the far right.

If you tap between column headers, eg A and

B, you can drag across to resize a column. Now
select cell A1 and use the formatting options in
the bar near the top to change the aesthetics.

Type in the remaining cell headers, as shown.

Select cell B3, then long-press on the corner to
drag the box to cell F3 to highlight them. Select
the top bucket-fill icon to change the colour.

4: Adding borders

5: Currency and numbers

6: Values and formulas

Tap cell A3 and drag the select tool to F16. Tap

the border icon (next to fill) and choose All

Select B5 and highlight to E18. Tap the General

header and choose Currency. Re-tap Currency,
select F18 and repeat the above. Select F5 to
F16, tap General and choose Number.

Key in the values as above (ignore the signs

for now). Tap B18 and then the Formulas tab.
Choose AutoSum > SUM and select the green
tick. All the values will now be added together.

storage can be accessed by other devices and computers.
In the tutorial we showcase how to enable iCloud Drive if
you havent done so already and look at how files are saved to it
using the core app, Pages although the principle can also be
applied to Keynote and Numbers. In addition, we show how to
open and import documents from compatible third-party apps,
as well as providing a tip on how to access your files via your
Mac, PC or iCloud.com. Whats useful to note here is that any
changes saved in one app/service will sync across to all of your
devices in real-time (with a good internet connection).
The only requirement is that all devices must be running at
least iOS8, the latest iCloud Windows software or Mac OS X
Yosemite to use iCloud Drive; so be aware of this before you
upgrade, as activating iCloud Drive will change the file structure
so older devices wont be able to access the content.

Saving to iCloud Drive

1: Enabling iCloud Drive

2: iCloud with Pages

3: Editing default template

Launch the Settings app, tap iCloud in the left

panel, then choose either Upgrade to iCloud
Drive or, if the option has been disabled, select
iCloud Drive and toggle this to on.

Launch the Pages app for instance and

after tapping Continue, choose the option Use
iCloud when prompted. Next tap on Create a
Document and choose Visual Report.

In the template example we selected, just tap

on the existing text and change this. Next, tap
the Visual Report header to change the title. To
finish, tap Documents.

when you install the iCloud software.
However, you can log in via iCloud.com
to access the drives contents and edit
the documents from here. Alternatively,
you can even create subfolders for

iTunes

iTunes started life as a way to purchase and

download music from your computer onto your
iPad. Since then it has expanded to cover films, TV
shows and audiobooks. As with apps, you can access iTunes
purchases across all of your compatible devices. iTunes also
comes with its own recommendation service called Genius,
which uses your previous purchases to highlight music, films
and shows you might like. When it comes to music on iTunes,
youll be making an outright purchase of an album or single
that you can then transfer to other devices. That doesnt
necessarily mean you have to download the music to your
device since purchased music can be streamed via the Music
app as long as you have an internet connection. TV shows
are also purchased outright, whereas movies can either be
bought or rented. Renting a movie is a cheaper option and
you will be given a month to watch your rental. Once you
start watching the movie, you will then have 48 hours to view
it before it becomes unavailable again. As soon as a purchase
has been made in iTunes, it will be made available in the
appropriate sister app such as the Music or Video app.

Take time-lapse videos

Since the iOS 8 software upgrade youre now able

Rather

Camera

iPad owners running iOS 8 and up are now able to

take awesome time-lapse videos with the built-in
Camera app. Time-lapse videos work in the opposite
way to slow-motion videos, speeding up long clips in a fastforward style. This is the type of footage youll have seen in
documentaries when clouds are racing through the sky. Rather
than filming continuously, time-lapse footage takes photos
at intervals, leaving you with this sped-up version of events.
The Camera app enables you to create this impressive type
of footage in just a few easy moves. The time-lapse feature
is perfect for condensing a beautiful, burning sunset into a
short but dramatic video clip, or capturing a long and winding
journey into just a few seconds of footage. This innovative
feature has broadened the creative output of the iPad and
allows you to make amazing cinematic videos to share with
your friends, or edit into longer videos. This tutorial will show
you how to navigate the Camera app, record fantastic timelapse video clips and play them back again.

between the Drums and Audio Recorder.

A default amp setup appears, typically English

Combo under the Clean Combo category.
Swiping left or right switches between nine
amp heads, providing new dials and controls.

Each selected amp has associated knobs

for shaping the sound. These are rotated by
pushing up or down, with Master and Output

Additional effects are available via the

stompbox button in the top-right. You may add
a maximum of four by tapping a vacant slot
and selecting from the pop-up menu.

When it comes to

from there. Thankfully this isnt

you tap out beats live on a trio

1: Choosing Drums

2: Playing with kits

3: Switching kits

On GarageBands Instruments browser we start

by choosing the normal Drums option. You
should find its snare drum icon between the
Keyboard and Guitar Amp instruments.

From here you are presented with a full virtual

Drum kit. You control the sound output and
create beats by tapping the individual drums,
the cymbals, hi-hat, snare etc.

Tap the name label situated above the selected

kit. A pop-up menu lets you switch between
three Classic, Vintage and Live Rock kits plus
three electronic drum machines.

4: Drum Machines

5: Mixer controls

6: Song Settings

Selecting a Drum Machine changes the kit into

a grid of 16 touch pads. Each has an icon for
drum type, with beats performed by simply
tapping one or multiple pads.

Tap the Mixer button right of the Metronome.

Here you set effect levels, adding echo and
reverb etc, alongside Velocity Sensitivity and
whether bass drum plays with cymbal.

Next to the Mixer button is Song Settings,

crucially for setting Metronome Sound along
with project Tempo and Time. Changing

your children, or let your hair down and get

So why would you play games on your iPad

underestimate the power of the mobile device
youre holding in your hands. The latest iPad Air

And then theres that screen in all its 9.7-inch
glory. Its Retina display clocks up a resolution

and 264 per inch. The iPad Air 2s display is also
thinner and has more vivid colours and greater
contrast. It also has the least reflective display of
any tablet in the world thanks to a brilliant antireflective coating. All in all then, the iPad is an
ideal machine for gaming, even those high-end
games that ask a lot of your mobile device.

Puzzle & Word

Its time to solve those mind-testing puzzles
Puzzle or word games may not be the first
genre you think of when it comes to iPad
games, but there is fun for all the family to
be had in this section of the App Store. The
joy of these apps is just how engrossed you
get in them. Download one of these and
youre going to while away a fair bit of time,

which is no bad thing when the games are

this good. Some of the apps showcased
across these pages are remarkably simple
ideas, put into practice exceptionally well.
Words With Friends, for example, become a
cultural phenomenon a few years ago and
is still going strong today: a simple idea,

implemented impeccably. Other apps like

Threes! and Rules! are firm favourites and
are never far away from the award spotlight
because they are so well crafted. The
underlying fact is that everyone loves to test
their brain out with a puzzle or word game.
Here are the pick of the crop.

Rules!
Price: 2.29/$2.99

As the name suggests, this addictive iPad

game is all about following rules, and
getting better at following them. Each
level gives you a new rule to follow. For
example, level six might tell you to tap
all whales, but the twist lies in the fact
that once youve done that you need to
follow rule five, rule four and so on. Not
until youve recalled all the rules will you

clear the board. You will inevitably be

hooked within minutes playing Rules!
and it also happens to be one the cutest,
most adorable puzzle games around, to
boot. As with all the best puzzle games,
the more you play it, the better it gets.
Truly, Rules! needs to be played to be
believed, and it really is well worth the
small asking price.

between the pair. As youd expect, things start off pretty
easy, but youre soon weaving your way through hundreds
and hundreds of levels, fighting hopelessly against the clock
to complete each screen. Along the way youll be searching
through hundreds of high-quality pictures, including famous
landscapes, beautiful action shots, celebrities snaps and pop
culture images.

1: An easy start

2: Becoming an expert

3: Getting it right

Things start off fairly easily in the earlier

levels, but its still a race against the clock to
notice the subtle differences in the skyline,
buildings or lighting.

As you move through the levels, the

difficulty soars. Every screen in this app
looks great, but do you want to skip a
level or request more time?

Nothing beats completing a screen and

moving up a level, but youll need all your
powers of observation to make sure you
beat the clock.

A game for all ages, Whats the Difference? sees gamers

hunting for discrepancies between a pair of similar images
