WhatisthedifferencebetweenOnDelay,OffDelay,SingleShot,IntervalOnandalltheseothertimedelayfunctions?
Solution/Resolution:
Understandingthedifferencesbetweenallthefunctionsavailableintimedelayrelayscansometimesbeadauntingtask.Whendesigningcircuitsusing
timedelayrelays,questionssuchaswhatinitiatesatimedelayrelay,doesthetimingstartwiththeapplicationorreleaseofvoltage,whenistheoutput
relayenergized,etc.,mustbeasked.
Timedelayrelaysaresimplycontrolrelayswithatimedelaybuiltin.Theirpurposeistocontrolaneventbasedontime.Thedifferencebetweenrelays
andtimedelayrelaysiswhentheoutputcontactsopen&close:onacontrolrelay,ithappenswhenvoltageisappliedandremovedfromthecoil;on
timedelayrelays,thecontactscanopenorclosebeforeoraftersometimedelay.
Typically,timedelayrelaysareinitiatedortriggeredbyoneoftwomethods:
applicationofinputvoltage
openingorclosingofatriggersignal
Thesetriggersignalscanbeoneoftwodesigns:
acontrolswitch(drycontact),i.e.,limitswitch,pushbutton,floatswitch,etc.
voltage(commonlyknownasapowertrigger)
CAUTION:anytimedelayrelaythatisdesignedtobeinitiatedwithadrycontactcontrolswitchtriggercouldbedamagedifvoltageisappliedtothe
triggerswitchterminals.Onlyproductsthathavea"powertrigger"shouldbeusedwithvoltageasthetrigger.
Tohelpunderstand,somedefinitionsareimportant:
InputVoltage-controlvoltageappliedtotheinputterminals.Dependingonthefunction,inputvoltagewilleitherinitiatetheunitormakeitreadyto
initiatewhenatriggerisapplied.
TriggerSignal-oncertaintimingfunctions,atriggerisusedtoinitiatetheunitafterinputvoltagehasbeenapplied.Asnotedabove,thistriggercan
eitherbeacontrolswitch(drycontactswitch)orapowertrigger(voltage).
Output(Load)-everytimedelayrelayhasanoutput(eithermechanicalrelayorsolidstate)thatwillopen&closetocontroltheload.Notethatthe
usermustprovidethevoltagetopowertheloadbeingswitchedbytheoutputcontactsofthetimedelayrelay.
