Overview of the 7705 SAR GNSS Receiver Card

Overview of the 7705 SAR GNSS Receiver Card

The 7705 SAR Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Receiver card is a GNSS receiver
that integrates GPS and GLONASS GNSS signals into the 7705 SAR-8 and 7705 SAR-18.
Note:

GLONASS signal integration is not supported in Release 7.0.

Installation of a GNSS Receiver card in a 7705 SAR-8 chassis with a CSMv1 is not
supported.

The 7705 SAR GNSS Receiver card has one GNSS RF port that is used to connect a GNSS
antenna. See Supported GNSS External Equipment for GNSS antenna and other external
equipment information.
All 7705 SAR-related parameters are configured and maintained through the
7705 SAR CLI or through the 5620 SAM. In addition, the GNSS Receiver card integrated
GNSS port status and statistics are available at the 7705 SAR.
The 7705 SAR GNSS Receiver card provides the following functions and services:

GNSS status display

GNSS receiver status
satellite constellation type
GNSS antenna status
synchronization status
GNSS time
operational status
antenna cable delay
elevated mask angle
number of visible and used satellites
antenna location (longitude, latitude, and altitude)

14

GNSS servicesthe GNSS Receiver card can provide a synchronization clock to the
SSU in the router with the corresponding QL for SSM. This frequency can then be
distributed to the rest of the router from the SSU as configured with the ref-order
and ql-selection commands; refer to the 7705 SAR OS Basic System
Configuration Guide for information. The GNSS reference is qualified only if the
GNSS Receiver card is operational, has sufficient satellites locked, and has a
frequency successfully recovered. A PTP master/boundary clock can also use this
frequency reference with PTP peers.

7705 SAR GNSS Receiver Card Installation Guide

GNSS Receiver Card Overview

In the event of GNSS signal loss or jamming resulting in the unavailability of timing
information, the GNSS Receiver card automatically prevents output of clock or
synchronization data to the system, and the system can revert to other alternate timing
sources.

7705 SAR GNSS Receiver Card Installation Guide

15

Typical Deployment Scenario

Typical Deployment Scenario

The 7705 SAR-8 and 7705 SAR-18 support frequency synchronization via a Layer 1
interface such as synchronous Ethernet, and ToD synchronization via a protocol such as NTP
or IEEE 1588v2. In cases where these methods are not possible, or where accuracy cannot be
assured for the service, you can deploy a GNSS receiver as a synchronous timing source.
GNSS data is used to provide network-independent frequency and ToD synchronization.

The CSM does not require provisioning. However, the IOM, which is an integral part of the
CSM software module, must be activated before you can provision and configure any adapter
card and port parameters. The IOM is activated using the card and card-type CLI
commands to specify the IOM slot number and type. Adapter cards must be provisioned
before the ports can be configured.
Note:

The card and card-type commands activate the IOM. IOMs need only be activated
once on a node.
The mda and mda-type commands provision and configure the adapter card.

Configure components in the following order:

1. IOM slot number (use the card slot-number command)
2. IOM type (use the card-type card-type command)
3. Adapter card slot number (use the mda mda-number command)
4. Adapter card type (use the mda mda-type command)
5. Ports (use the port command)

Installing the GNSS Receiver Card

Removing an Adapter Card Configuration

If you remove an adapter card and will not be replacing it, or will be replacing it with a card
of a different type, you must remove the associated configuration, such as port connections,
prior to removing the card. If you will be replacing it with a card of the same type, you do not
need to remove the associated configuration.
Refer to the 7705 SAR OS Interface Configuration Guide for details on configuring cards and
ports.
In the example below, a GNSS Receiver card in MDA slot 2 is being removed and is not being
replaced with another card. In this example, only the port configuration must be removed.
Command Syntax
Step 1. port port-id
Step 2. shutdown
Step 3. exit
Step 4. card slot-number
Step 5. mda mda-number
Step 6. shutdown
Step 7. exit
Step 8. no mda mda-number

Installation Procedures

Installation Procedures
Warnings and Notes
Warning:

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage can occur if cards are mishandled. Always wear
an ESD-preventive wrist or ankle strap connected to a nearby ground point that is
connected to the site grounding point (typically, the grounding stud on the
7705 SAR, or a properly grounded rack or work bench).
Always place components on an anti-static surface.
Do not power up a 7705 SAR before verifying that all common equipment (chassis,
power, cooling, and grounding) is connected properly.
The Fan module and all cards in the 7705 SAR-8 chassis must have the same voltage
type.
If the card is removed and will not be replaced, ensure that the filler plate is installed.
The filler plate must be installed to prevent excess dust accumulation and to help control
airflow and limit electromagnetic interference.
To comply with the GR-1089-CORE requirement R4-9 [31] standard for
electromagnetic compatibility and safety, all intra-building ports are specified for use
with shielded and grounded cables at both ends.
The intra-building ports of the equipment or sub-assembly are suitable for connection
to intra-building or unexposed wiring or cabling only. The intra-building ports of the
equipment or sub-assembly must not be metallically connected to interfaces that
connect to the Outside Plant (OSP) or its wiring. These interfaces are designed for use
as intra-building interfaces only (Type 2 ports as described in GR-1089-CORE) and
require isolation from the exposed OSP cabling. The addition of primary protectors is
not sufficient protection in order to connect these interfaces metallically to OSP wiring.
The GNSS RF port on the GNSS Receiver card is a Type 6 port (antenna port) as
described in GR-1089-CORE.

Note:

26

Ports cannot be configured until the adapter card is provisioned.

Services cannot be configured until the ports are configured.
Card slot numbers are MDA 1 through MDA 6 on the 7705 SAR-8 and MDA 1 through
MDA 12 on the 7705 SAR-18.
The 7705 SAR-8 and 7705 SAR-18 support the installation of up to two GNSS Receiver
cards.

Warnings and Notes

Warnings and Notes

Lightning and Electrical Safety
Danger:

Lightning strikes are possible during stormy weather, and could result in death or severe
injury. Do not work on the installation, power supply lines, or antenna feeders of a GNSS
antenna during stormy weather.
Never make equipment connections in wet locations.
The equipment must be provided with a readily accessible disconnect device as part of
site preparation.

Warning:

36

The GNSS antenna must be installed such that it is not the highest point in an
installation. The GNSS antenna must not be a lightning rod.
The GNSS antenna must be within the protective cone of any grounded structure such
as a nearby antenna tower or ancillary lightning rod. The protective cone is the area
between the circumference of a circle with a 150 ft (45.7 m) radius that tangentially
touches the ground and the side or top of the grounded structure, as shown in Figure 7.
The percentage of protection for the protective cone area is 96%.
If the GNSS antenna is mounted to the side of an antenna tower above the 150 ft
(45.7 m) point, then horizontal lightning rods must be employed such that the antenna
is outside of the area of a 150 ft (45.7 m) sphere that touches both lightning rods and
between both rods, as shown in Figure 8.
If the GNSS antenna is mounted on a separate pole or structure near an antenna tower
or other grounded structure, and the distance from the pole or structure to the antenna
tower or other grounded structure is less than the height of the pole divided by 6, then
the pole or structure and the antenna tower must be bonded together to eliminate
possible arcing during a lightning strike.
The GNSS antenna site must be grounded with an integrated (multipoint) grounding
system. The equipment is susceptible to lightning surges due to its construction. It is
imperative that all equipment in the GNSS antenna site be properly grounded and that
a low impedance path to earth (10 or less) be provided. Grounding conductors must
be as straight and short as possible. No sharp bends or loops are permitted in grounding
conductors.
Grounding of the antenna feeder cable outer shield must be performed as instructed by
the ground kit manufacturer.

7705 SAR GNSS Receiver Card Installation Guide

Interfacing External GNSS Equipment with the GNSS Receiver Card

Warning: (continued)

The antenna cable shield must be bonded at one point minimum near the equipment,
provided that the GNSS antenna is installed in the protected zone with less than 60 ft
(18.3 m) of coaxial cable.
If the coaxial cable run along the tower is 60 ft (18.3 m) or longer, the coaxial cable
shield must be grounded at multiple points near the antenna and the equipment every
60 ft (18.3 m).
A primary surge protector must be installed at the GNSS antenna cable terminated at
the antenna cable support structure.
The surge protector must be bonded to a nearby ground bus bar that is connected
directly to the grounding electrode system at two points.

General Considerations
Warning:

Do not install the GNSS antenna directly under structures that may accumulate or shed
snow or ice.
All external cable connectors must be at least IP67 rated (total protection against dust
and protection against submersion in water).

Caution:

38

The GNSS antenna installation site should be chosen such that it is not in a direct
radiation pattern of the site transmit antennas, and situated such that no other
antennas, microwave transmit dishes, and other sources of RF radiation that could
affect GNSS reception are in close proximity. The GNSS antenna should not be located
within 10 ft (3 m) horizontally and vertically from any actively transmitting antenna.
All grounding system material (cable, connectors, buses) must be of high quality
materials that resist deterioration and require little or no maintenance.
All antenna cable runs must be appropriately supported in accordance with the
connector and cable manufacturers instructions.
Antenna cable sweeps must be performed prior to the start of the installation.
Ensure that additional attenuation caused by splitter use is accounted for in the antenna
power budget.

7705 SAR GNSS Receiver Card Installation Guide

Interfacing External GNSS Equipment with the GNSS Receiver Card

Supported GNSS External Equipment

The 7705 SAR GNSS Receiver card is designed to operate while connected to an external
GNSS receiver antenna.
The installer is responsible for providing the materials and arranging for the construction of
the antenna site and path from the antenna to the GNSS Receiver card during site preparation.
This includes any required grounding, surge protection, and additional equipment in the path,
and any necessary support structures from the antenna to the location of the GNSS Receiver
card.

GNSS Antennas
Table 4 lists the GNSS antennas supported by Alcatel-Lucent for use with the 7705 SAR
GNSS Receiver card.
Note: Use of a GPS antenna with the GNSS Receiver card will restrict the signal recovery
to GPS signals only. A GNSS antenna must be connected to the GNSS Receiver card to
recover GLONASS signals. Switching the connection from a GPS antenna to a GNSS
antenna will cause a service disruption.

41

GNSS RF Port Input Power

GNSS RF Port Input Power

The signal gain from the antenna to the GNSS RF port must be within a range of 16 to 26 dB.
Simple gain calculations provide a means of determining the viability of a particular GNSS
antenna installation. The total loss from cable, splitters, surge protection devices, and
connectors is subtracted from the total gain from the GNSS antenna and any active splitters.
The resulting gain must be within the required 16 to 26 dB range.
The signal gains and losses from all components should be considered at the GPS L1 band
and GLONASS L1 band frequencies.
Table 7 lists the losses from the two recommended antenna cable types.
Table 7: Supported Antenna Cables Signal Loss
Cable Type

Loss Per 100 ft (30.5 m)

FSJ4

4.6 dB

LDF4

2.8 dB

The loss from the recommended HUBER+SUHNER 3403.17.0050 EMP protector or an

equivalent external surge protection device is 0.5 dB.
The loss from a typical unamplified GNSS splitter ranges from 0 to 6 dB. Amplified splitters
add to the gain of the antenna.
The maximum loss from the recommended 3HE07961AA and 3HE07962AA adapter cables
is 0.8 dB.
The loss from a typical antenna cable connector ranges from 0.1 to 0.3 dB.

GNSS Antenna Power Budget

The minimum required input gain at the GNSS RF port is 16 dB; therefore, the maximum
allowed attenuation over the course of a cable run is 10 dB when using a 26-dB gain GNSS
antenna, or 24 dB when using a 40-dB gain GNSS antenna.
Antenna Gain Minimum Input Gain = Maximum Allowed Attenuation
Table 8 lists the maximum cable lengths possible while keeping the attenuation within 10 dB
for a 26-dB gain GNSS antenna, and 24 dB for a 40-dB gain GNSS antenna.

Caution: The following data does not take into account signal loss from unamplified GNSS
splitters, surge protection devices, and connectors, or signal gain from amplified GNSS
splitters. A detailed power budget analysis including all sources of loss or gain should be
undertaken when planning a site installation.

Installing External GNSS Equipment

Installation Site Selection

The GNSS antenna installation site should be selected such that the maximum aggregate of
all blockages above the configured elevation mask angle (default 10) does not exceed 25%
of the surface area of a hemisphere around the GNSS antenna. The blockage in any given 90
sector (or quadrant) should be less than 12.5% of the surface area of the hemisphere.
Caution: GNSS antennas installed in the northern hemisphere require the clearest view to
the south, east, and west. GNSS antennas installed in the southern hemisphere require the
clearest view to the north, east, and west.

The following types of obstructions and possible sources of interference must be considered
when selecting an installation site:

hills, mountains, trees, and surrounding plant life

Trees do not totally block, but rather degrade, GNSS reception, especially during
periods of heavy rain or snow. Consider whether increased summer plant growth
could also become a problem.

adjacent buildings or any large structures such as grain elevators, airplane hangars,
bridges, water towers, and overhead roadways

any locations where birds or animals may easily nest or build on or around the
antenna

any colocated RF transmission antennas, TV stations, cable television cables, or

arc-welding equipment
The GNSS antenna installation site should be chosen such that it is not in a direct
radiation pattern of the site transmit antennas, and situated such that no other
antennas, microwave transmit dishes, and other sources of RF radiation that could
affect GNSS reception are in close proximity. The GNSS antenna should not be
located within 10 ft (3 m) horizontally or vertically from any actively transmitting
antenna.

Configuring the GNSS Receiver Card

After the GNSS Receiver card has been provisioned, installed, and connected to the external
GNSS equipment, the card must be configured in the config context with the
characteristics of the installation site. The steps below configure a GNSS Receiver card in
MDA slot 2.
Command Syntax

Example

Step 1. port port-id

Step 2. gnss
Step 3. antenna-cable-delay signal-delay
Step 4. elevation-mask-angle mask-angle
Step 5. type [gps] [glonass]
Step 6. exit

port 1/2/1
gnss
antenna-cable-delay 650
elevation-mask-angle 12
type gps
exit

The following example displays the gnss, antenna-cable-delay,

elevation-mask-angle, and type commands to configure the GNSS Receiver card in
7705 SAR-8 card slot 2 (MDA 2) with an antenna cable delay of 650 ns, an elevation mask
angle of 12, and a GNSS type of GPS.
Note: GLONASS is not supported in this release.

under-current status caused the port operational
status to be down. Currently, the port remains
operationally up in the event that any GNSS
splitters used do not provide a load.
over-current: short circuit, or maximum power
limits for the receiver have been exceeded
no-bias voltage: antenna power disabled

Sync Status

locked: GNSS time is within alarm limits (1 s)

not locked: GNSS time is outside of the alarm
limits, configured alarm threshold is too low,
time-receiver autonomous integrity monitoring
(TRAIM) is turned off, or there is an
insufficient number of tracked satellites

Receiver Status

Acquiring Satellites: GNSS receiver is

attempting to track satellite
