In This Chapter
This chapter provides an introduction to the Alcatel-Lucent 7705 SAR GNSS Receiver card:
13
The 7705 SAR GNSS Receiver card has one GNSS RF port that is used to connect a GNSS
antenna. See Supported GNSS External Equipment for GNSS antenna and other external
equipment information.
All 7705 SAR-related parameters are configured and maintained through the
7705 SAR CLI or through the 5620 SAM. In addition, the GNSS Receiver card integrated
GNSS port status and statistics are available at the 7705 SAR.
The 7705 SAR GNSS Receiver card provides the following functions and services:
14
GNSS servicesthe GNSS Receiver card can provide a synchronization clock to the
SSU in the router with the corresponding QL for SSM. This frequency can then be
distributed to the rest of the router from the SSU as configured with the ref-order
and ql-selection commands; refer to the 7705 SAR OS Basic System
Configuration Guide for information. The GNSS reference is qualified only if the
GNSS Receiver card is operational, has sufficient satellites locked, and has a
frequency successfully recovered. A PTP master/boundary clock can also use this
frequency reference with PTP peers.
In the event of GNSS signal loss or jamming resulting in the unavailability of timing
information, the GNSS Receiver card automatically prevents output of clock or
synchronization data to the system, and the system can revert to other alternate timing
sources.

refer to the System Specifications section in the 7705 SAR-8 Chassis Installation Guide
and the 7705 SAR-18 Chassis Installation Guide.
20
Provisioning Requirements
To configure cards and ports, you must be able to access the 7705 SAR by console, SSH, or
Telnet connection. Refer to the 7705 SAR-8 Chassis Installation Guide or 7705 SAR-18
Chassis Installation Guide for information and instructions on console, SSH, and Telnet
connections.
The CSM does not require provisioning. However, the IOM, which is an integral part of the
CSM software module, must be activated before you can provision and configure any adapter
card and port parameters. The IOM is activated using the card and card-type CLI
commands to specify the IOM slot number and type. Adapter cards must be provisioned
before the ports can be configured.
Note:
The card and card-type commands activate the IOM. IOMs need only be activated
once on a node.
The mda and mda-type commands provision and configure the adapter card.

You can now remove the installed card and replace it if required; see Installing or Replacing
a GNSS Receiver Card. If you are simply removing the card, insert a filler plate in the empty
slot. If you are replacing the card with a different type, provision the MDA slot with the new
card type before installing the new card. If you are replacing the card with the same type, you
do not need to provision it.
25
Installation Procedures
Installation Procedures
Warnings and Notes
Warning:
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage can occur if cards are mishandled. Always wear
an ESD-preventive wrist or ankle strap connected to a nearby ground point that is
connected to the site grounding point (typically, the grounding stud on the
7705 SAR, or a properly grounded rack or work bench).
Always place components on an anti-static surface.
Do not power up a 7705 SAR before verifying that all common equipment (chassis,
power, cooling, and grounding) is connected properly.
The Fan module and all cards in the 7705 SAR-8 chassis must have the same voltage
type.
If the card is removed and will not be replaced, ensure that the filler plate is installed.
The filler plate must be installed to prevent excess dust accumulation and to help control
airflow and limit electromagnetic interference.
To comply with the GR-1089-CORE requirement R4-9 [31] standard for
electromagnetic compatibility and safety, all intra-building ports are specified for use
with shielded and grounded cables at both ends.
The intra-building ports of the equipment or sub-assembly are suitable for connection
to intra-building or unexposed wiring or cabling only. The intra-building ports of the
equipment or sub-assembly must not be metallically connected to interfaces that
connect to the Outside Plant (OSP) or its wiring. These interfaces are designed for use
as intra-building interfaces only (Type 2 ports as described in GR-1089-CORE) and
require isolation from the exposed OSP cabling. The addition of primary protectors is
not sufficient protection in order to connect these interfaces metallically to OSP wiring.
The GNSS RF port on the GNSS Receiver card is a Type 6 port (antenna port) as
described in GR-1089-CORE.

Tighten the captive screws to secure the card or filler plate. Do not over-tighten.
The recommended torque is 3 to 4 lbf-in (0.34 to 0.45 N.m).
Step 6.
With the ejector levers rotated inward, hold the GNSS Receiver card by the
levers, align the card with the slot guides, and slide the card into the slot.
i.
ii. Press the GNSS Receiver card firmly into the slot by pushing in both
ejector levers at the same time with your thumbs. Make sure that the card
connectors are seated in the backplane connectors and the faceplate is flush
with the front of the chassis.

Installation Procedures
34
Step 7.
If you replaced the GNSS Receiver card, check the Pwr LED on the faceplate. If
the GNSS Receiver card is properly inserted and the 7705 SAR-18 has valid power,
the Pwr LED is lit red. See 7705 SAR GNSS Receiver Card Connectors and LEDs
for a description of LED activity.
Step 8.
If applicable, reattach the cables removed in Step 1. See Interfacing External GNSS
Equipment with the GNSS Receiver Card for information about connecting the
GNSS Receiver card to external GNSS equipment.
In This Chapter
This chapter provides information about interfacing external GNSS equipment with the
7705 SAR GNSS Receiver card:

Lightning strikes are possible during stormy weather, and could result in death or severe
injury. Do not work on the installation, power supply lines, or antenna feeders of a GNSS
antenna during stormy weather.
Never make equipment connections in wet locations.
The equipment must be provided with a readily accessible disconnect device as part of
site preparation.
Warning:
36
The GNSS antenna must be installed such that it is not the highest point in an
installation. The GNSS antenna must not be a lightning rod.
The GNSS antenna must be within the protective cone of any grounded structure such
as a nearby antenna tower or ancillary lightning rod. The protective cone is the area
between the circumference of a circle with a 150 ft (45.7 m) radius that tangentially
touches the ground and the side or top of the grounded structure, as shown in Figure 7.
The percentage of protection for the protective cone area is 96%.
If the GNSS antenna is mounted to the side of an antenna tower above the 150 ft
(45.7 m) point, then horizontal lightning rods must be employed such that the antenna
is outside of the area of a 150 ft (45.7 m) sphere that touches both lightning rods and
between both rods, as shown in Figure 8.
If the GNSS antenna is mounted on a separate pole or structure near an antenna tower
or other grounded structure, and the distance from the pole or structure to the antenna
tower or other grounded structure is less than the height of the pole divided by 6, then
the pole or structure and the antenna tower must be bonded together to eliminate
possible arcing during a lightning strike.
The GNSS antenna site must be grounded with an integrated (multipoint) grounding
system. The equipment is susceptible to lightning surges due to its construction. It is
imperative that all equipment in the GNSS antenna site be properly grounded and that
a low impedance path to earth (10 or less) be provided. Grounding conductors must
be as straight and short as possible. No sharp bends or loops are permitted in grounding
conductors.
Grounding of the antenna feeder cable outer shield must be performed as instructed by
the ground kit manufacturer.
Warning: (continued)
The antenna cable shield must be bonded at one point minimum near the equipment,
provided that the GNSS antenna is installed in the protected zone with less than 60 ft
(18.3 m) of coaxial cable.
If the coaxial cable run along the tower is 60 ft (18.3 m) or longer, the coaxial cable
shield must be grounded at multiple points near the antenna and the equipment every
60 ft (18.3 m).
A primary surge protector must be installed at the GNSS antenna cable terminated at
the antenna cable support structure.
The surge protector must be bonded to a nearby ground bus bar that is connected
directly to the grounding electrode system at two points.

General Considerations
Warning:
Do not install the GNSS antenna directly under structures that may accumulate or shed
snow or ice.
All external cable connectors must be at least IP67 rated (total protection against dust
and protection against submersion in water).
Caution:
38
The GNSS antenna installation site should be chosen such that it is not in a direct
radiation pattern of the site transmit antennas, and situated such that no other
antennas, microwave transmit dishes, and other sources of RF radiation that could
affect GNSS reception are in close proximity. The GNSS antenna should not be located
within 10 ft (3 m) horizontally and vertically from any actively transmitting antenna.
All grounding system material (cable, connectors, buses) must be of high quality
materials that resist deterioration and require little or no maintenance.
All antenna cable runs must be appropriately supported in accordance with the
connector and cable manufacturers instructions.
Antenna cable sweeps must be performed prior to the start of the installation.
Ensure that additional attenuation caused by splitter use is accounted for in the antenna
power budget.
GNSS Antennas
Table 4 lists the GNSS antennas supported by Alcatel-Lucent for use with the 7705 SAR
GNSS Receiver card.
Note: Use of a GPS antenna with the GNSS Receiver card will restrict the signal recovery
to GPS signals only. A GNSS antenna must be connected to the GNSS Receiver card to
recover GLONASS signals. Switching the connection from a GPS antenna to a GNSS
antenna will cause a service disruption.
