Application for New Club

All clubs must begin going through a 1-year trial

period. Clubs that meet the following criteria will be
promoted to chartered status:

Adopt club goals that impact the community in a significant*

way
Document evidence and action plans illustrating stated goals
have been met
Completion of a mid-year audit as well as end of year audit

*Significant impact on the community is assessed by the

Executive Council. The council will use the following criteria to
assess the significance of your impact:
What sets your club apart from existing clubs?
Does your club have an action plan to achieve goals?
Does your club impact the Community (SAS, Shanghai, or
Global) in a way that Adds Value to those impacted?
Does your club have evidence of impact? i.e. purchase sports
equipment for migrant schools.
The point of this application is to focus your club work so that it is
meaningful while simultaneously holding the club members
accountable. If you fail to achieve the above after 1 year of trial
existence, you will not fold, however your club will continue as
unchartered.
Information on TYPE of Clubs:
Service: Service clubs provide a service for individuals or a group
of people. These services usually do not necessitate an economic
contribution. Examples include: Tutoring, reading to the elderly,
attending local orphanage to play with children, teaching
elementary students rugby, computer training, etc. If money is
needed to pay for certain things (school supplies for migrant
children for example), service clubs may apply to the executive
council for funds to cover such costs of operation.
Charitable: Charitable clubs provide financial support for
individuals or groups of people. They are can be associated with
broader international organizations and non-profits. Clubs that are
charitable clubs have bank accounts at SAS and can fund raise
freely. Examples are: Eggschange, Wokai, and Animals Asia.
Interest: Interest clubs are clubs that are formed around
individuals common interests. Chess club, computer programming
club and fitness club are examples of interest clubs.

Application for New Clubs Form A

Clubs Mission Statement:
The Physics Club at SAS wishes to promote interest and educate
students in the field of physics. We hope to create a multidiscipinary approach to physics where we are able to incorporate
other fields of study into physics learning.
Please provide a rationalization for why this club fills a niche
at SAS that is not already being filled by an existing club:
Currently at SAS, there are many science clubs: Chemistry Club,
Science Club, Biology Club, Medical Club, just to name a few.
However, we believe that although some of these clubs may discuss
physics or conduct experiments related to this field, these clubs do
not go deeply enough into the topic for people who truly enjoy
physics to reach the level of understanding they desire. For
example, true physics fanatics may be interested in complex topics
such as relativity or quantum mechanics, however, none of these
other clubs may discuss these topics. We believe that by creating a

physics club, we can bring together those who are very passionate
for physics.
Our Clubs Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and
Time Based (SMART) goals for the following year are (if
more than one, please number):
1. Promote appreciation of physics at SAS by exposing students
to new topics
2. (Possibly) tutor or create study groups for freshmen or AP
physics kids who need extra help
3. Conduct experiments that enhance our knowledge of physics
topics
4. Invite professional or advanced-knowledge speakers on
specific topics to give seminars and lectures
These goals will be successful, if and only if, we achieve the
following (you will be required to file a detailed GOAL
FORM to execs if your club is approved):
1. Weekly meetings to discuss how to reach goals
2. Contact local/visiting professors who have advanced standing
in physics knowledge to request lectures or seminars from
them
3. Reach out to students who take physics to offer help
4. Use the engineering process or experimental deisgn to design
new and innovative experiments that demonstrate physics
concepts
These goals Add Value to the community in the following
way(s):
This club will bring together the community of scientists by uniting
them with a single purpose: the study of physics. By bringing a new
science club to our school, which is focused in a discipline other
than biology and chemistry, we will help apply phsycis knowledge to
the real world. In our school, we have noticed that many juniors and
seniors pick biology or chemistry as their science of choice,
especially girls. In fact, in our physics class, there is a much larger
percentage of boys. By creating this club, we also hope to balance
out the gender discreptancy of girls who choose to take physics.
Describe your clubs Leadership structure (name, position,
responsibilities, email) for the upcoming School Year and
state how theyre chosen:
Angela Sha and Rebecca Shao: Co-Presidentspicked because we
came up with the original idea of this club
angela02px2018@sasstudent.org
rebecca01px2018@sasstudent.org
Major responsibilities: communicating with teachers and
professors outside of school, organizing and designing project
ventures, creating goals

Rachel Hua: Secretarypicked due to her experience in AP physics

Major responsibilities: writing emails to members, organizing
time slots
rachel01px2017@sasstudent.org
Kevin Tu: Public Relations Officerpicked because he has a strong
interest in physics and takes the highest level class available to him
Major responsibilities: getting more people to join the club,
promote events such as experiments, etc.
How does your clubs MISSION STATEMENT align with SAS
Mission Statement and/or Core Values:
This club aligns with SASs mission statement because it encourages
students to have a lifelong passion for learning. Physics is an
advanced topic, both mathematically and scientifically, and students
may feel difficult to continue once the topic becomes harder and
more mathematically modeled. However, with a developed passion
for physics, students can learn to continue to pursue their passion
for learning no matter what the difficulties.
