HLA Happenings

Tomato grafting workshop will be held on November 14 and 16 from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Southwest Purdue Ag
Center. More information please contact Wenjing Guan.
HLA Thanksgiving Lunch. Tuesday, November 15 from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm in the HLA Greenhouse. HLA will provide
main course and drinks. Please bring an appetizer, side dish or dessert to share. Undergrad, graduate students, staff,
faculty and families are welcome.
On November 15, David Barbarash will be one of seventeen new members inducted into the Teaching Academy. New
Fellows and Associates are selected based on winning the Universitys highest undergraduate teaching award the
Murphy Award or independent review of their teaching and pedagogy credentials. Congratulations David!
Gail Ruhl (Botany and PP) and Rosie Lerner will be presenting a hands on workshop on "Diagnostic Challenges Is my
tree dying and why?" at the Indiana Professional Lawn and Landscape Association Regional Workshops, November 15 in
Plymouth, IN and November 17 in Columbus, IN.
Wednesday, November 16 from 10-11 am, HORT 217. Coffee Hour. Drop in to interact with your colleagues. Graduate
Students, this is your chance to chat with faculty. Please bring your own cup.
Aaron Patton, Kyle Daniel, Cale Bigelow and Tammy Goodale will be presenting and involved with the MRTF Turf &
Landscape Seminar November 16-17, 2016 at the W.H. Daniel Turf Center, West Lafayette.
Ahmad Shah Mohammadi will present his PhD Dissertation Seminar on Thursday, November 17 at 1:00 pm in HORT 222
entitled Managing Bacterial Wilt (Erwinia tracheiphila) on Muskmelon with Early Control of Striped Cucumber Beetle
(Acalymma vittatum (F)) and through Varietal Selection.
Yihai Wang in Jian-Kang Zhu's lab, will be speaking on behalf of Zhu lab in the Indiana Seed Trade Fall Luncheon in
Lafayette at the Indiana Crop Improvement Association on November 17, 2016. The topic will be "Gene Editing:
Principles and Applications in Crop Improvement".
Thursday, November 17 at 3:30 pm, Reception at 3:10 pm, HORT 117. Horticulture Seminar presented by Fred
Whitford, Purdue University, How to Communicate Your Ideas to An Audience.

Bruce Bordelon will be traveling to Burlington, Vermont Nov 17-18 for the NE-1020 Committee meeting, Multi-state
Evaluation of Wine Grape Cultivars and Clones.
Xiaojun Zhao will present her MS Thesis seminar on Friday, November 18 at 2:00 pm in HORT 222 entitled Suppressive
Effects of Forest Industry Byproducts Applied at Two Rates on Phytophthora Blight in Three Different Soil Types.
Lori Hoagland will present Fostering beneficial plant-microbial relationships in vegetable production systems at the
Purdue Forum on Soil Health, Ag Water Management, Nutrient Management and Cropping Systems on November 18 at
the Hendricks County Fairgrounds Conference.
Dean Jay Akridge will be visiting HLA on Friday, November 18 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. During this time, we will have an
open forum where all faculty, staff and students will have an opportunity to meet with him. The open meeting will be
held in room 117 HORT beginning at 2:00 p.m. Please make every effort to attend.
HLA 3rd Friday Social. Friday, November 18, 5:00 pm at Jakes Roadhouse, 135 S Chauncey Ave, West Lafayette. Come
join in conversation and networking.
Jay Akridge, Jason Henderson, Ariana Torres, Joan Fulton, Maria Marshall, Chris Hurt, and Jim Mintert attended the
Indiana Farm Bureau-Purdue Supper Series on November 7, Indianapolis.
