Eco Bottle Lab Report

Introduction
(Hangarter, 2000) There is a process where a plant grows directly from a seed, this is called
germination. How germination works is, when a seed is provided with efficient amount of water,
and it has to have an appropriate temperature. When a seed drinks up all the water that it is called
Imbibition. The plants main habitat is soil, soil has many different types of physical properties,
like size, shape and arrangement of the primary soil particles. (Haby V.A, Baker, L. Marvin,
and Feagly Sam, 2016) Another important feature are the pore spaces, and in the article it says
these pore spaces have an effect on how the air and water move. The soil is meant to supply
plants nutrients and water. Soil is a benefit for plants but for that, soil has to benefit on
something. Soil benefits on additional compost. (Augustin Chris, Rahman Shafiqur, 2010)
Compost is a mixture of manure, straw, and animal carcasses says Rahman. He also mentions
Germination also needs oxygen. Oxygen is required for germination because it needs
metabolism. Oxygen is an atmospheric gas, and this kind of gas can be found in soil pore spaces.
If the seed is buried to far deep in the soil, then the seed will be oxygen starved. Another thing
that germination depends on is, light or darkness. (McMahon Mary, 2016) In the article it is
mentions Light or darkness does not affect many seeds, but some seeds that are found in forest,
so it will not be able to germinate unless an open space allows and amount of light to enter. Also,
Germination rate is a count of how many seeds in a plant species. Germination rate is useful for
calculating the amount of seeds wanted. Germination relies on many different sources and its

sources rely on other sources, this tells you how much work goes into germination, because each
process depends on another process.

Experimental Design
Problem Question- How can we determine the difference of seed growth in fertilizer versus top
soil?
Hypothesis- If we analyze seed growth in fertilizer and soil, the seeds in the fertilizer will
germinate twice as much as the seed in the soil because the fertilizer has more nutrients for rapid
seed growth
Independent Variables- Seed growth
Dependent Variables- Seed and Fertilizer

Materials & Method:

For our Eco bottle, my group and I have decided to equip two water bottles. With both bottles we
will cut in half, and we will keep one half of the bottle so we can close our system. With one of
the bottles, the bottle that will be faced to the ground, it will contain minimal water and the other
one that will be face down in the other water bottle and that one will contain top soil. Between
the bottles we will add a leaf plant that will get the water up to the soil.
