ASSESSMENT BRIEF
Assessment Title:

Assignment 1 Decoding the Jargon recommending The Best Solution

Decoding the Jargon

You are employed as a Network Manager at the Belfast College of Technology,
which will soon have a hardware and software upgrade to the computer
network system. As part of this upgrade, you have been requested to
prepare some reports on various aspects of computing as part of a staff
development program in order to help alleviate any problems that may arise
from the upgrade process.

Scenario The Best Solution

(must be programme
orientated and relevant
to module under study)

You must produce a system specification requirement that meets the needs
of the BMC Web Development team. This should clearly identify the hardware
specifications of the system with appropriate explanations of your choice of
components. You are also required to provide some comment on the choice
of Operating System and software requirements.
The Web Development Team has asked you to recommend a suitable
computer system with justification of how the recommended system would
meet the requirements for web development within BMC. This must meet
current industry standards.

Task 1
P1
explain the function of computer hardware components
Please create a report (which could be in the form of a table for easy reference by the staff members)
which explains the function of computer hardware components. Use images or photographs to aide your
explanations and remember that not all staff are computer literate so you need to try and keep the
terminology simple. You must describe how the components communicate with each other.
Task 2P2
explain the purpose of operating systems
The college will soon be introducing an upgrade to the operating systems on the college computers.
Please create a table (or report) to outline at least six basic functions of operating systems and how
they are used to facilitate users.
Task 3P3
explain the purpose of different software utilities
The college will soon be installing some new software utilities onto the staff members computers. Please
create a table (for easy reference for staff members) that explains the purpose of different software
utilities. Screenshots may be used to enhance your table. Please include the following categories of
software utilities and include the name of at least one example of a software program for each of these
three categories:
1. Security (e.g. anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewalls)
2. Clean up tools (e.g. removal of cookies, Internet history, defragmentation)
3. Drive formatting
Task 4
M1
compare the features and functions of different operating systems
The college is thinking of introducing other operating systems (such as Linux and Apple Mac computers)
as well as using the existing Windows operating system. Please create a report (which can be in the form
of a table) that compares the features and functions of two operating systems (e.g. Linux and Windows).
The report should summarise the strengths and weaknesses of both operating systems to the staff
members. You should include at least eight features in your comparison. Screenshots may be used to
enhance your report.

Task 5D1
explain how software utilities can improve the performance of computer
systems
Please create a report that explains how different software utilities can improve the performance of the
staff members computers. Include the following headings in your report:
Anti-virus; anti-spyware; firewall; clean-up/diagnostic tools; defragmentation.
Please include the name of at least one example a software utility/program for each heading. Also, in
your report you must explain to the staff members the benefits of these software utilities by giving
reasons how the software utilities can improve the computers performance. Your report should not
exceed 750 words.
Task 6P4

recommend a computer system for a given business purpose

Produce specification requirements that meets the needs of the BMC Web Development team. This
should clearly identify the hardware specifications of the system with appropriate explanations of your
choice of components. You are also required to provide some comment on the choice of Operating
System and software requirements.
Research three market leaders (e.g. HP, Dell, Acer, etc) and create a table to compare the performance of
each computer system that you believe would benefit the Web Development Team. You can create a
further table to research and compare different types of software, operating systems etc

Task 7M2

justify choice of computer system to meet a given business purpose

Recommend one of the computer systems you provided with justification of how the recommended
system would meet the requirement of the Web Development Team.
Create a presentation for the Web Development team explaining which system you believe will best suit
their needs and why. You must also include your recommendations for software to be purchased and
justify these choices.
Considerations for selection should include some of the following: cost; user requirements e.g. software
to be used, network sharing, need for maintenance contract, outputs required, need for integration with
other systems e.g. home entertainment; processing power, storage capacity, accessibility for disabled
users, the ICT competence of the intended user, training requirements and security.
