Building
design
Our designers share a
common goal: to create
buildings that work better
for people.

Arup unites a global network of inventive and highly skilled

building engineers and design specialists. Together, we are best
known for helping to shape ambitious buildings.
While our most recognisable work is in complex, groundbreaking structures, many of which Arups input made possible,
it is better building performance that drives us. What defines a
buildings performance will depend on its purpose. Listening to
the things that make an asset valuable to our clients, and to their
buildings users, gives direction to our designs. Furthermore, we
are experienced in using BIM (building information modelling)
capabilities to collect all the information in a smart, integrated
digital format.
With world-class expertise creative and technical we help
to realise buildings that are better because they are more useful
and attractive to the people who own and inhabit them, more
sympathetic to their context and more commercially sustainable.

Oita Prefectural Art Museum, Oita

The museum is designed to be open and flexible,

while incorporating the traditional bamboo crafts of
Oita. The ground floor is a large column-free space
that can be fully opened to the outside, while the
upper floor consists of closed exhibition spaces with
timber grid faade.
Arup realised this challenging design by adopting
seismic base isolation, long-span steel trusses and
hanging floor, and also applying state-of-the-art
CFD simulations. The distinctive outer timber grid
walls of the upper exhibition space are made of
structural timber braces and steel columns with timber
coverings that act as fire protection, making full use
of this sustainable material.

While its appearance may be unusual, it effectively
turns the surroundings into its own garden. Two
separate stairways spiral up and unite as one at the
top, just like a metaphor for marriage. They also
form the chapels roof, eaves and walls, creating a
central nave that can accommodate 80 guests.

The buildings design utilises its surroundings and

the sloped terrain to achieve the most desirable
lighting and thermal comfort. ROKI itself is a
firm that researches and manufactures air filtering
components for vehicle engines. The large glazed
roof utilises this material to allow for enhanced
daylight penetration. The adaptive design admits
light and wind naturally into the building, ensuring
thermal comfort. The building has a wide-open
column-free space under a long-span roof supported
by hybrid trusses made of steel and wood.

This base-isolated data centre in Tokyo has a GFA of

22,000m2. To ensure high performance, reliability and
effectiveness in its structural, air conditioning and power
supply systems, Arup engineers proposed to insert
a structural truss beam between the raised floor and
concrete slab to effectively reduce the floor height. The
reversed truss beam leaves the underside of the slab flat
so that it allows easy and flexible anchoring of building
systems on the ceiling. The data centre also features
a range of new technologies such as Diesel Rotary
UPS and low energy cooling systems, achieving high
environmental and cost performance.

Faade engineering

Lighting design

A buildings skin can define its value, performance and

architectural expression. Faades and building envelopes
which form the outer skins of buildings are not only
expressing the project image and creative intent but also
influencing significantly the buildings embodied energy and
operational energy consumption. A thoughtfully designed skin
can make a new building work more effectively for its owners,
occupants and environment.

In skilled hands, lighting enhances, sculpts and inspires. We

understand the interplay of structural form and lighting, and
work with architects and artists to provide original conceptual
designs. Our technical knowledge ensures that concepts
become viable solutions. We also know how lighting affects
people at work, at home, at school and at play from day to
night not just inside but for outside spaces too. This equips
us to shape solutions that are as positive for people as they
are sustainable for the environment and for businesses.

Arups approach is based on ingenuity: everything we do, from

concept design to implementation and renovation, is designled and underpinned by technical rigour such as advanced
3D modelling technology and energy, thermal or daylighting
simulations. Arup works with building owners and architects to
develop faades that encourage productive building occupants
by providing comfortable internal environments. We also
collaborate with contractors and manufacturers to develop new
faade technologies and products.

Arup helps clients think about lighting strategically whether

their goal is to use the visual and emotional impact of light
to strengthen brand experiences or to lower carbon emissions
and save on energy bills. Our truly global team of designers
create expressive, sustainable and award-winning concepts
in light.

JR Kanda Manseibashi Building,

Tokyo

Songshan Taipei New Horizon Building,

Taipei

Within a 10-minute walk from eleven train and metro

stations in central Tokyo, the high-rise office block is
characterised by the openable windows in its faade.
Each floor contains an open space called Winter
Garden for office workers to relax where windows
are openable to admit fresh air. The building has
two main faades. One is a south-facing white wall
and the other is a north-facing glass curtain wall.
The faade configuration makes good solution for
sun shading and daylight penetrations for the office
spaces. Terracotta tiles are also used in parts of the
faade to connect with the historic outlook of the JR
Manseibashi station in red bricks.

Arup acted as the faade consultant for this composite

facility located in the cultural park in Taipei whose
envelope comprises large-scaled openings with sashes
and glazed screens under an asymmetrically curved
roof. Such kind of overseas projects often require
meticulous collaborations with local architects,
engineers and contractors. As we are experienced in
both domestic and overseas projects, we were able to
support the architectural firm Toyo Ito & Associates
in accordance to local circumstances, especially in

Muse de Louvre-Lens, Lens

Natural light is at the heart of the design. The two

main galleries feature glazed roofs with specially
designed grating that bring in daylight for exhibiting
the artworks whilst providing a nice view of the sky
from inside the building. Underneath the glazing,
there are adjustable louvres which can be opened
and closed to control the amount of daylight entering
the space. The louvres are integrated with the roof
structure and in a frame with the electric lighting
track.
SANAAs architecture requires a simple and
unobtrusive electric lighting scheme, complementing
the spaces. In response, our museography lighting
utilises museum-quality LED spotlights an energy
efficient scheme with no compromise on quality
of light.

Arup worked closely with OMA architects

to develop the lighting design from exterior
to interior. Composed of vertical (tower) and
horizontal (podium) building elements, the
faade lighting reinforces the unique architecture,
deliberately putting the structure in silhouette.
This lighting approach makes a contrast to the
surrounding high-rise towers in the central business
district.
Each floor of the tower is controlled independently,
allowing the operation of the lights to reduce
energy consumption. The luminaires are dimmable,
giving flexibility for scene setting and further
potential reduction of energy consumption while
maintaining the luminous presence of the tower.

Building information modelling

Technologies shape designs. While complex building forms are

made possible around the world, designers mission today also
includes considerations of building performances, the risks
involved in construction and their impact on the environment.
In this regard, digital tools help us further our understanding
on the relationship between those different design factors.

Digital design and co-ordination is broadly embraced by

the industry. Engineering and simulation tools are getting
increasingly sophisticated, no matter it is infrastructure,
environmental consulting, buildings, or urban planning.
At Arup, we believe a context where project participants
all interact will bring out the best from each party. We see
building information modelling (BIM) as a collaborative
platform that lets everyone participate, operate, and
document the progress, running up to the delivery.

Arup has developed a unique set of skills over the years,

allowing us to create, investigate and engineer innovative
building geometries that bring values to our clients. From
energy analysis, to multidisciplinary optimisation, or to
automated shop drawings, Arups advanced computational
design capabilities make a difference in every stage of design.

The strength of BIM is that we remove uncertainty in the preconstruction phase via 3D models co-ordination; however,
selecting the right BIM strategies to match the scope of
work requires experience. As a design firm that has worked
with a variety of clients and projects, Arup is a specialist in
combining BIM with other skill-sets and will continue to
deliver total design to our clients.

Advanced technology and

research
Advanced technology & research (AT+R) plays a central
role in Arup engineering and its technical leadership around
the world. Research, advanced analysis and simulation are
the essence to our work. We bring top specialists together to
develop inventive, practical and cost-effective solutions to
complex problems, serving wide-ranging fields like building
design, infrastructure, automotive, rail and energy sectors.
AT+Rs service varies in fields including wind, seismic and
vibration engineering, damping systems, accident simulations,
offshore engineering, rehabilitation of existing structures,
blast and impact engineering, and value engineering and
optimisation. AT+R has developed numerous features for
the non-linear finite element analysis program LS-DYNA,
particularly in seismic and geotechnical analyses.

Pedestrian flow design

In both public and private venues, it is vital to carefully
consider crowd safety throughout the design process. Crowd
simulation is useful for designers, operators and owners to
understand people movement and their behavioural patterns,
such that adequate provision of space be allocated and crowd
management plans be drawn up accordingly.
Arups very own 3D modelling and crowd analysis program,
MassMotion, has a high-performance database that allows
users to rapidly analyse building designs with a variety
of built-in modelling, mapping and filtering tools. This
predictive power enables decision-making in early stages
of design. MassMotion is also suitable to create evacuation
plans for facilities or large-scale public events.

Silver Mountain catches immediate attention of the

visitors entering the Senzoku Gakuen University
music campus. This mountain form is carefully
cladded with stainless steel panels, and the organic
arrangement of the panels is inspired by fish-scale
pattern. The envelope employs the traditional
technique of Ichimonji-buki, a roofing system
commonly used in Japanese temples and shrines.
Arup has married this with computational techniques
so that 7,800 stainless steel plates are precisely
arranged to maximise the number of identical
instances. This shortened the construction time
while retaining the high sense of uniformity and
cohesiveness in the overall appearance viewed from
any directions.

This city library serves as the cultural centre for Gifu

As the overall curvature of the timber roof largely

depends on the flexibility of the layered thin planks
and the level of on-site bending, a delicate balance

Sludge Treatment Facility, Hong Kong

This is the first sludge treatment facility in Hong

Kong. The facility is self-sustaining: heat generated
in the incinerators will be recovered for power
generation and surplus power will be exported to
the regional electricity grid. Arup, together with
the JV, overcame the challenge of constructing on a
previous pulverized fuel ash lagoon, and achieved
the clients desire for an iconic architectural design
whilst meeting stringent building and fire services
requirements for the process buildings. The entire
delivery adopted a BIM process in which 3D models
were used for co-ordination, drawing production,
operational to maintenance simulation and material
take-off upon completion of the design.

This mixed-use development is located in

Nanjings city centre featuring retails, offices and
hotel and residential development. Arup carried
out traffic engineering design from conceptual
design stage to construction drawing review stage.
It considered the feasibility of traffic facilities as in
the existing Phase 1, while attempting to separate
traffic circulation according to its types. Using
the crowd simulation software MassMotion, Arup
analysed the peak-hour pedestrian movement of
different activities within the site. Width of each
internal pedestrian walkway, the design of cinema
evacuation paths and the size of lift waiting areas
were analysed. Aimsun, the vehicle simulation
software, was also used to optimise internal and
external road designs.

Prada Ginza, Tokyo

This mega store in Tokyo suburb was challenging

in that Arup had to balance the requirements by
Japanese construction practices with the clients high
expectation for both innovation and efficiency.
Prior to awarding this design-and-build contract, we
facilitated a two-stage competition, allowing general
contractors to bring their ideas and construction
techniques into the design at an early stage. To meet
Ikeas high safety criteria, Arup also advised on how
to apply the US National Fire Protection Association
standards on top of Japanese regulations for the
sprinkler, smoke exhaust and fire alarm systems.

Prada had to move its flagship store in Ginza to

another location due to redevelopment. There were
many constraints during the removal, including a
tight schedule. As the project manager, we needed to
maintain good communication with the client and the
buildings owner in order to solve the issues properly.
Arup was consulted on the structural, MEP and
faade technical design for the store.

New Kansai International Airport Company Ltd

Transaction advice for Kansai and

Osaka international airports, Osaka

Arup is a global leader in conducting technical and

commercial due diligence for infrastructure asset
across classes. Our unique approach which integrates
technical, operational and commercial issues within
transactions is highly recognised by leading investors
and infrastructure operators. For the first large
scale infrastructure concession deal in Japan, we
conducted vender due diligence for the two airports
in Osaka and the results help inform global investors
about the opportunity to transform performance of
existing assets.

Arup played a central role in delivering infrastructure

and venues for the London 2012 Olympic and
Paralympic Games. We provided a great variety of
services, including transport and security consulting
from strategy development, planning stage to
operation. Arup continues to provide vital services
for its legacy transformation in order to bring
lasting benefits to the local and wider community in
Stratford.

City Resilience Framework

Zuidas Dok

Zuidas Development Amsterdam,

Amsterdam

The Zuidas project demonstrates Arups vision of

how Transit Oriented Development (TOD) should
look like. Arup was appointed to develop strategic
guiding principles and ambition for the districts
future development. The central core accommodates
930,000m of mixed-use development around the
new high-speed rail station and a robust network of
infrastructure and access routes to be submerged to
below ground. The creation of a collection of new
public squares as part of the open space network of
Zuidas and its surroundings is the cornerstone for a
timeless and long-lasting development framework for
the city.

City resilience is the capacity of a city to function,

so that citizens survive and thrive no matter what
stresses or shocks they encounter. Arup developed
the framework as a tool for cities to understand their
resilience. It consists of four aspects of resilience
health and wellbeing, economy and social, leadership
and strategy, infrastructure and ecosystems and
12 indicators, and is used to shape urban planning,
practices and investment.

Social
usefulness
One of our founding
pillars is to be socially
useful in our work. We
research into the future
and help the community
with our expertise
wherever we can.

Research and development

Underpinning it all is the firms research expertise. Arup
works to expand and communicate the know-how, building
the foundations for future business by identifying needs and
opportunities as well as sponsoring research with external
partners.

Contributing to society
Arups global network of expertise and insight provides a
wealth of advice for countries who are looking for a brighter
future, and for communities that require relief and aid.
In the aftermath of the recent Tohoku earthquake and tsunami
with nuclear issues still going on, Arup supported architects
having high motive to build a Home for All in Soma city
(Fukushima prefecture) on a pro-bono basis, to provide
a much needed communal setting for affected families to
gather and raise each others spirit.

In the past 70 years, we have been recognised as the go-to firm

for the most structurally and logistically complex projects.
Sydney Opera House, for instance, still very much defines the
host city or even as a national icon to the world.

Arups legacy is seen around

the world a testimony that
we always achieve fantastic
ideas for current and future
generations.

Legacy
projects

Even in Japan, our presence extends far beyond a landmark in

Tokyo, but also covers shop fronts of luxury stores, seismicproof city halls, next-generation factories to airports, or even
kindergartens for local communities. We influence the built
environment with you together.
