The Doxology
H 380, v.3
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below;
praise him above, ye heavenly host: praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
In the Pastoral Office for The Reconciliation of a Penitent, (BCP 448) the Priests Response to the Penitent following his confession of sin and the pronunciation of absolution is, Go (or abide) in peace, and pray for me, a sinner.
The penitent, having confessed his sins to the priest and having received Gods absolution through the priest, is asked to pray for the priest, who is also a sinner.
In the parable in todays Gospel lesson, a Pharisee and a Tax Collector both pray at the
Temple. The Pharisee will leave the Temple and return to his home righteous. He hasn't changed; he was righteous when he came up and righteous as he goes back down.
The tax collector, however, will leave the Temple and go back down to his home justified, that is, accounted righteous by God. How has this happened? The tax collector
makes neither sacrifice nor restitution.
When we have nothing to claim but our dependence on God's mercy we forget for a
moment our artificial divisions and stand before God naked and aware only of our
need, then we, too, are justified by the God of Jesus and invited to return to our
homes in mercy, grace, and gratitude.
As Dallas Willard wrote in his book The Spirit of the Disciplines, Grace is not opposed
to effort, it is opposed to earning. Earning is an attitude. Effort is an action. Grace, you
know, does not just have to do with forgiveness of sins alone. Live your life like there
is Heaven on Earth.

2 The sparrow has found her a house and the swallow a nest where she may lay her
young; *
by the side of your altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God.
3 Happy are they who dwell in your house! *
they will always be praising you.
4 Happy are the people whose strength is in you! *
whose hearts are set on the pilgrims' way.
5 Those who go through the desolate valley will find it a place of springs, *
for the early rains have covered it with pools of water.
6 They will climb from height to height, *
and the God of gods will reveal himself in Zion.
Lector and People

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
