Lumens per wolt have greatly increased with continued advances

in vaporJight-source efficiency. For exampie, a four-foot fluo-

rescent gave 2000 lumens in 1940, now gives 6900 lumens. And
a 400-watt mercury went from a lumen rating of 13,200 lumens
to a rating of 22,000 iumens today.

Residentiol lighting with efficient, modern luminaires enables

progressive communities to make streets safe and attractive and

helps to build civic pride. New luminaires, such as the M-250R,

take advantage of low equipment, operating and maintenance

costs which make good residential lighting feasible.

Relotive life of vapor lamps has increased many times over

filament lamps, changing many relamping and maintenance
expense figures of even a few years ago. New Bonus Line mercury
lamps have an average life of over 4 years and fluorescent lamps
two years compared to 9 months for filament 1amps.

Underground distribution offers forward-looking communities an

attractive "wireless" view which complements modern archi-

tecture. Appearance is enhanced by General Electric's stylish

street lighting luminaires. Power failures due to storms are
virtually eliminated, making community streets safe at all times.

Whitewoy lighting, or use of high light levels downtown, has
greatly helped to revitalize the central part of cities weakened by
a trend to the suburbs. Creating "whiteways" of four, five or
even ten footcandles has been found to be a positive first step
with a visible and immediately measurable payoff.

Highwoy lighring of the ten critical areas of driver decision is

more prevalent, with many locales continuously lighting heavily
travelled stretches. Comparisons of accident rates on lighted
versus unlighted highways fully justify the investment on the
basis of safety and convenience.

rurol, suburbqn commerciol oreqs
"Private lighting" is the term given by many to the renting
of street lighting equipment to private home and property
owners. Charges for private lighting systems are usually
based on a monthly rate for equipment, maintenance, and
power. Among the biggest users of private lighting are:
rural and suburban commercial areas such as motels, service stations, drive-ins, grocery stores; school and church
yards, and recreational areas. Lighting at night provides
safety and convenience for the users of these areas. Businessmen know that a well-lighted establishment after dark
is an invitation to customers. In most areas larger luminaires,
fluorescent luminaires are used

Another popular area for private lighting instaliations is rural
and suburban homes and streets. Individuals and whole com-

munities want the protection from vandals, criminals, and

pranksters

plus the nighttime beauty-that modern,

adequate lighting brings. Many farmers are using private

lighting today. They enjoy the added working hours and the
protection of their farm equipment and livestock that lighting gives them. In most applications. General Electric 175watt mercury units are emploYed.

The newest application for private lighting is rural

and

suburban commercial driveways, walkways, and yards. Many

of the users of private lighting in this area are motels, apartments, industrial plants, and farmsteads. These areas are
dependent on lighting to provide the safety necessary for
guests, residents, employees, and equipment. Recommended
for these applications is the new General Electric Form 104
fluorescent luminaire. Sleek and stylish, this latest addition
to the fluorescent family adds both daytime beauty-nighttime safety, and convenience to any application.

PRODUCT DATA

M.IOO

mercury luminqires

In the M-100, General Electric offers the first open residential

mercury luminaire with truly outstanding light control. In
addition, its high electrical effrciency, ease of installation and
maintenance, and lightweight, unitized design make it one of
the most significant achievements developed for residential
street lighting.

The M-100 offers built-in ballasts for operation of 100- and

175-watt mercury lamps, in either regulator, lag, or reactor (high
or normal power factor) types.
The M-100 uses a shielded-source design to provide excellent
house-side shielding. Three types of distribution patterns are
available with two different reflectors. With one reflector, Type II
distribution can be obtained using a clear lamp and Type III
distribution obtained with a phosphor-coated lamp with socket
in position "8." With socket in position "A" and this reflector,
an even narrower distribution*designed especially for residential
streets can be obtained. The M-100 has a second reflector

which provides

"pointed-square" distribution pattern for

intersection and general area lighting.

M-250R

The M-250R is designed for use with 100-, 175-, and 250-watt
lamps, and is available with built-in Power Pack ballast. The
sma1l size and light weight make the M-250R easy to install and
maintain.
A one-piece, preciseiy contoured reflector uses elliptical,
circular, and parabolic sections to obtain maximum light uniformity and effrciency. The reflector latch is of spring quality,
stainless steel-positively held in place, but easily removable for
whatever cleaning may be necessary.
The turning prism refractor, exclusive with General Electric,
is featured on all Type M-250R luminaires. Rounded prisms, on
the inner surface of the refractor, produce a wide angle of light
distribution . . . directing the light up and down the street and
away from bedroom windows.

This modern, standardized line of mercury luminaires features

outstanding photometric performance, high electrical effrciency,

wide flexibility, and low instaliation and maintenance costs.

Mercury lamps of all types-175-1000 watts-are effciently
operated in these luminaires. The precisely-contoured reflector
and prismatic refractor give optimum light output and control.
General Electric's built-in "Power-Pack" bal1asts, avaiiable

in all wattages and all voltages, provide exceptionally 1ow

watts loss. IES distribution Types II, III, and IV can be selected
by simple adjustment of the adjustable socket without changing

l/a- or 2-inch brackets.

"Power Pack" unitized construction combines optical assembly,
ballast, and photoelectric control into one unit. The convenient
terminal board facilitates wiring connections.
refractors. The slipfitter mounts on either

CUSTOM M-IOOO AND

cusToM M-2000.

Custom M-1000 and M-2000luminaires are designed for use where

distinctive appearance is required in addition to outstanding

photometric performance. Both are available with built-in
Power Pack ballasts to operate 700- or 1000-watt mercury-vapor
iamps. They utilize the same optical assembly used in the M-1000

to give optimum light output and control. IES distribution

Types III and IV are available and can be selected by simpie
adjustment of the iamp socket. The CM-2000 provides over
100,000 iumens in lamp output from a single luminaire. Ail

electrical components are prewired to a single terminal board for

ease of installation.

Featuring

shatter-resistant open acrylic refractor, General Electric's Acrylic

Suburban luminaire is designed to operate 100-, 175- and 250-watt mercury lamps.
Virtually unbreakable in normal service, the acrylic refractor resists thermal shock,
is unaffected by corrosive atmosphere or blowing sand, and is interchangeable with
glass refractors of similar design. Maintenance calls to replace broken glassware are
greatly reduced since BB's and rocks bounce off, and .22 bullets penetrate, but will

not shatter the refractor.

The luminaire is a complete operating package. The General Electric cadmium
sulphide photoelectric control locks on top of the hood in the standard receptacle.
Built-in, long-life 100-, 175- and 250-watt ballast in the hood ef6ciently operates
the lamps.

The new Form 101 multiple hood features an integrai die-cast

aluminum housing slipfitter assembly. Positive clamping action
to the bracket is assured by use ofthe die-cast aluminum "shoe"
on the bottom portion of the slipfitter. The slipfitter is designed
for use on lr,1-inch brackets. The hood is available with either a

aluminum reflector is spun around the edge of the glassware.

This keeps the highly-specular reflecting surface clean-biocks
entrance of bugs, dirt, and other foreign material. This design
protects the refractor lens edge from chipping-reduces glassware breakage. The precision-designed refractor lens directs
the iight where desired.
The rollerlatch optical assembly allows easy one-hand
operation for relamping or cleaning. The globe ring holding
the refractor is hinged, and swings open by releasing the springloaded roller latch. The optical assembly snaps shut easily.
Glassware can be lifted off the hinge.
The clamp-band design offers a high degree of protection from
dirt, insects and water seepage. The clamp band evenly distributes the pressure around the globe forcing the globe edge
upward against the reflector flange, eliminating the necessity for a
gasket, This method of clamping eliminates any possibility of
reflector distortion.
The roller-Iatch and clamp-band optical assemblies use the
same precision-designed refractors and globes as used in the

spun-sealed design.

General Electric's Type SA open optical assembly features

the industry's first acrylic refractor lens, which is shatterresistant and one-fourth the weight of comparable glass refractors. Stones and BBs bounce off; .22 bullets will penetrate
but not shatter the refractor lens. Precisely-molded prisms
produce a soft, "jewel-iike" glitter. Its light weight makes installation quick and easy. It is designed for 2500- to 6000:lumen

The Type SO is a modern, open-suburban optical assembly
having an IES Type II light distribution. It is specially designed
for use with 2500lumen lamps and light is confined to vital
areas with adequate shielding and minimum glare.

While the Power-pack design with selfcontained ballast offers many advantages,
some users may require external ballasts.

The table below shows recommended

G-E ballasts.
General Electric's external ballasts are
light and easy to install. Like the built-in
Power-pack ballasts, they utilize highquality, grain-oriented strip steel to
reduce "watts loss," resulting in lower
operating cost. Mechanical and electrical
construction is designed specifically for
long life in outdoor duty.
