The Advantages of Rapid Prototyping with 3D Printers
Rapid prototyping is a method of fabricating a complex mechanical component in a short
amount of time, most of the time with complex shapes and sizes. There are plenty of advantages

Adams 3
to rapid prototyping like biomanufacturing, large-scale construction, organ printing/transplanting
and much more. 3D printing is a large part of why rapid prototyping is becoming so big because
it is possible to machine a part in basically half the time than normally. The knowledge that the
world know now is a just a minuscule part of what there is to come in the future
Herbert Voelker was an engineering professor at the University of Rochester, now known
as Cornell University. As he went on his sabbatical his main question was, how to do
interesting things with the new automatic, computer-controlled machine tools."Manufacturing
- Rapid Prototyping." Manufacturing - Rapid Prototyping. NSF, n.d. Web. 07 Oct. 2016. The
work Volcker did in the 1970s transformed the way of design products. The old way products
were designed was they took large chunks of material, then cutting down until they get what they
want. His way was to build up, not cut down. His theory is that it will save time, material, and
money. So he took his theorem to the National Science Foundation, He was awarded A grant to
find out his theory. This was the first Strategic Manufacturing Initiative grants (STRATMAN).
As a result of Volcker's research, he started a new industry called free form fabrication also
known as rapid prototyping.
The main origin of 3D printing can be traced back to 1976. The First printer was the
inkjet printer. In 1984 Charles Hull was the co-founder of 3D systems. The 3D system is a
system that can create an object from digital data. In the 90 3D printing was using UV lasers
pointed to a vat of the material that is the printing material . The lasers are shot into the vat of
the shape each layer. This can make complex parts can be made overnight. In the early 2000s,
3D printers went to the medical field to print organs. They were able to print a working kidney
that filters blood in an animal. Their goal is to be able to print organs for humans who need organ
transplants. In 2005 3D printers began to be able to be open sourced. So then anybody could go

Adams 4
and make a 3D printer. The prep was starting to be widely distributed for a cheaper amount of
money. In 2008 3D printing has started to expand into many different areas. In 2008 it was the
first printer that can print the all the parts they need to make the printer. Then in the medical
field, they printed a prosthetic leg. Then in 2009 DIY 3d printing kits started to become more
available to the public. Plus in 2009 they were able to print blood vessels of the human body. In
2011 3D printers took to the sky. The first 3D printed unmanned plane. This plane was built in 7
days and had a budget of 5000 euros. Next that year they made a 3D printed car in Canada. It
was made to be fuel efficient and inexpensive. It gets 200 mpg on the highway and 100 mpg in
the city. The estimate if put out for retail was 10,000 to 50,000 dollars if becomes commercially
viable. Now with a 3D printer there is a possibility to have to gold and silver as material . The
gold was able to be printed in 14 ks. In 2012 was the first year that a 3D printed part to be
inpainted it to a human.
There are many new uses that 3D printing has made in the medical field. One is the
advantages of is the research they have done is about taste and smell of food. So what they did
was made prints of the airways and the esophagus. Then they took the information to find out
the best way for humans to get the taste and smells of food. One of the main advantages of 3D
printing that the medical field is biomanufacturing. There is a number of organs that the medical
field has made because the organs needed are in large amounts. The organs transplanted list of a
large list.the transplant list is 120,000 and climbing. The people that that are getting transplants
this year is 10,000. So the transplants that take place is only 1/12 of the list. There is plenty of
people waiting for the organ that will die just waiting for the organs . But now there are testing
and researching 3D printers for the organs to have transplants. So if the science community finds
a way to be able to print an organ one day then the next day the person in need of the organ will

Adams 5
have the organ that they need to live. So that will send a huge breakthrough in the medical field
to keep the people alive. Now there is a science called inkjet printing that has emerged as the
frontrunner of all for medical uses. But now there is a big gap from printing an organ for a
transplant. But right now there is a large amount of research that is going on to try and bridge the
gap to where they can print the organ right before the transplant. One of the things that they are
working on is the body not to reject the organ and start to attack the organ. So a thing they are
trying to do is start the organs with the cells of the one in need of transplants. So the body does
not attack the organ.
The 3D printer is starting to branch off with all sorts of types materials to print with. The
next material that is new to the market is food. Right now there is printer that can print with
sugar and chocolate to make edible treats.this will start to open door to printing off a snack for a
kid after school .once the technology is there consumers will be able to print off the dinner. The
3D printer is a large improvement for rapid prototyping that someone can make a prototype in a
fraction of the time that it use to take. In the early times, fabricators would take a large block of
material and cut down on the material until the desired design was completed. But now they can
make a design on the computer on a C.A.D. program then take it the base material and build up
the prototype. So it saves time, money, and materials. In large scales construction, 3D printing is
just starting to play around with. So basically the only differences of small scale to large are the
size and what they're using to print. In the large scale construction, they are using concrete to
print small building and play houses. 3D printing is helping to learn in education today. The
education of today is the is the jobs of tomorrow. There is a big part of rapid prototyping that
will have to be added to have rapid prototyping as CTE class in most school. When this happens
we will have rapid prototyping as common knowledge. Matt Carpenter is a CTE teacher which

Adams 6
is seeing into the future of rapid prototyping. I have a BA in Trade and Industry as well as
Technology Education,This is my 10th year of teaching. -matt carpenter. At erwin high school
rapid prototyping sought after seid so by matt carpenter, In my opinion Rapid Prototyping
would be a very sought after course here at Erwin High School. I envision a hands on interactive
classroom that would draw the attention of students. One of the most fulfilling learning
experiences is when you can see the finished product of your work and effort. With Rapid
Prototyping you not only get to see it, you can pick it up and hold it 3D printing could
definitely be a part of the Drafting 1 curriculum and in some ways it is. No, we dont go to the
library and allow each student to print their very own design nor would we. However, there is no
reason why the class couldnt go and observe the 3D printing in action. I do believe it is a
valuable resource that our school was able to come by and more people should take advantage of
the opportunities the 3D printer provides. - matt carpenter. This will be the thing that will push
rapid prototyping over the edge from nerds hobbies to everyday use in your house.
On a 3D printer, they all have a frame. The frame must be made solid so there is little to
no vibration on it because is can mess up the print. So the more stable the frame is the print will
be better quality. Next part is the extruder. It is a very important part of the 3D printer. This part
is what takes the plastic cord and puts it through the hot end then places it on the platform for the
print. This is the filament size decided whether a 1.75 mm or 2.85 mm. 1.75 mm is better than
2.85mm for self-builds because it is more forgiving than 2.85mm. Then pick the filament type
for the printer. There are 2 main types of filaments abs or pla. Then there is the print bed. The
print bed is either heated or not. Most times the print bed is glass. abs needs a heated print bed
because of the print cooling and warming. Next, it will need a power supply for the printer. For
abs it is more power demanding so a 24v power supply will be needed. But pla is not a power

Adams 7
hog all that is needed is a 12v power supply. So best case scenario is to get a 24v power supply
for either pla or abs. One of the other most important parts is the brains of the printer. This is
what takes the CAD project into layers then give the information to the printer so it can print the
part.
So if one is wanting to go make a 3D print for personal use. The first thing that that is
need it to make a CAD file for the print. First thing is to make a 3D printable object. To start a
2D object must be drawn that will later be make into a 3D object by extruding. to make a cup
from a 3D printer. It would first make a 2d circle on the program then extrude the circle to a
cylinder. Then it would make the cylinder into a shell. The shell is what take the inside of the
cylinder to make the cup. Then it will export to file as an STL then sending it to the printer.
The majority of future of printing is the material of printing. Right now is mostly plastics
and partial plastics. The future is having telltale signs that it will be able to print metals and
circuitry. Plus they are trying to research printing of batteries. So that tells use that printing
phones are in the works. 3D printing is going from prototyping to the manufacturing of 3D
printing. Next thing is to be looking to the future is being able to mass produce cars, homes, and
buildings. This will be a quick way to make parts for anything and it would be a great thing for
replacement parts. But to get to this parts of the future there will have to have big advances in the
time and speed of the printing. But to get to the point where everybody has a 3D printer there
will have to be a large amount of thing to do for it to get that big. One is the amount of money
for each printer will have to go down some. Then the efficiency of the printer will have advance
10 fold.
A method of fabrication a complex mechanical part in a small amount of time is rapid
prototyping. Biomanufacturing, large-scale construction, organ printing/transplanting are plenty

Adams 8
of ways that that rapid prototyping in today's world. A large part of rapid prototyping is 3d
Printers, which is a large enabler for all of the future that are seeing in the world of rapid
prototyping. A big thing to add is all of the new techs. Is minimizing the money, time, material
and efforts that are putting forth into the world of rapid prototyping. With the future of 3D
printing, it would be very beneficial for all citizens to have access or own a Version of a 3D
printer.
