Look at the illustration on the board, what
can you say?

It is the particles of matter in different

phases.

C. Lesson Proper
What do you think is our lesson all about?
First, what is Chemistry?

What is matter?
Ok... so, what is the basic unit of matter?
And how many phases does the matter
have?
No, it has five phases, what are those?

So, what is the fifth phase?

That is Bose Einstein Condensates
It is for you to find out. Research for that
It is your assignment for tomorrow.
What are the difference of the five?

A plasma is a hot ionized gas consisting of

I think maam it is all about matter.

It is the study of matter.
It is the study of composition, structure
and changes in matter.
It is anything that occupies space and
has a mass.
That is called atom.
Four Maam!
Solid
liquid
gas
plasma
We dont know Maam
What is that Maam?
Ok maam.
Its particles..
Some are compact like in solid.
Some are spreading apart like liquid and
gas.

approximately equal numbers of positively

charged ions and negatively charged
electrons.
What are the examples of plasma?
stars
lightning

D. Generalization
What is the main difference in the five
phases of matter?

IV.

Their main difference is the structures of

each state in the densities of particles.

Solid, liquid, gas, plasma, Bose Einstein Condensates

C. Lesson Proper
What is Bose Einstein Condensates?
A BoseEinstein condensate (BEC)
is a state of matter of a dilute gas of
bosons cooled to temperatures very
close to absolute zero.
Another?
A Bose-Einstein condensate is a
group of atoms cooled to within a hair
of absolute zero.
When they reach that temperature
the atoms are hardly moving relative
to each other; they have almost no
free energy to do so.
What are the examples of Bose Einstein
condensates?

Two examples of Bose-Einstein

condensates include superfluids,
such as cold liquid helium, or
superconductors, such as the
nucleons inside a neutron star.
Bose-Einstein condensates are
another state of matter, similar to
solids but with less energy.

So now that you know all about the fifth phase,

let us go to periodic table of elements. Bring
out you Periodic table!

What is periodic table?

A table of the chemical elements
arranged in order of atomic number,
usually in rows, so that elements with
similar atomic structure (and hence
similar chemical properties) appear in
vertical columns.
How many elements in all?
118 in all
What do you call the horizontal rows in the
periodic table?

Groups

How many groups?

18 Maam
What about the vertical columns?
Period
How many Periods?
7 Maam
Tell me what group(G) and period(P) this
elements belong:
1. Boron
2. Titanium
3. Silver
Remember that the lanthanides and actinides
series belong to period 6 and 7 respectively.
And they belong to group 3.

G13, P2
G4, P4
G11, P5
Ok maam!

D. Generalization
What can you say about the periodic table?
Periodic table are arranged
according to their atomic number and
atomic structures.
IV.

Evaluation
Group yourselves with six members each. Form six words from the periodic
table. Write your members in sheet of paper together with your answers.
Example: CAN= Ca
N

Ok, then, let us proceed to your activity 1.

Get one whole sheet of paper and copy
this..
Activity 1
Which is matter, which is not?

(students will write on their papers)

Procedure:

Q1. What similarities do you observe among

the first five given samples?

The mass of the given samples can be

measured.

Q2. Does each sample have a measurable

mass?

No, light and heat cant be measured.

Q3. Do you think each sample occupies

space?

No, not all occupies space.

Q4. Is smoke have mass and occupies

space?

Yes, when collected in a container with

cover, you can measure the mass.

Q5.Do you think light and heat have mass

and occupies space?

No, heat is energy in transit while light

is a form of energy.

D. Generalization
So, is everything you see are all matter?
IV.

No, because not all have mass and

occupies space.

Evaluation:
In a sheet of paper, explain why heat and light are not matter. Give at least 3
-5 sentences to explain your answer.

V.

Assignment:
Bring one whole sheet of paper for your activity 2

VI.

Objectives
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
a. infer from the given situations or observable events what matter is
made of; and
b. explain how these observed situations give evidence that matter is
made up of tiny particles.

VII.

Subject Matter
A. Topic: Activity 2: What is matter made of?
B. Reference: Science Learners Module
pp. 174-175
C. Materials:
cup sugar
1 cup clean tap water
I piece, 100 ml graduated cylinder
1 measuring cup
1 piece transparent bottle
food coloring

B. Motivation/Review
Tell me if it is matter or not.

All of these are matter.

These are not matter

C. Lesson Proper
Copy this one
Procedure:
1. Using a clean and dry graduated
cylinder, pour sugar until 20 ml mark.
2. Transfer it to transparent bottle.
3. Measure 50 ml of clean tap water using
graduated cylinder.
4. Add 50 ml water to the sugar and mix
well.

(students will copy on their paper)

Q1.What is the taste of the resulting mixtures?

It is taste sweet.

Q2. Observe what happens to sugar?

It dissolves, the sugar particles mixed

well with water particles.

Q3. What is the volume of the sugar and water

mixtures?

60 ml

Q4. Is the volume of the resulting sugar

mixture equal, more or less than the volumes
of unmixed sugar and water?

It is less than the volume of the

unmixed sugar and water

Q5. Observe the sugar and water particles

after mixing.

The tiny particles of water have

spaces so the tiny particles of sugar
filled in the gaps between the
particles.

Q6. Describe what you observe after adding

food coloring into the water.

The food coloring spread out in the

water.

Q7.Observe what happens to food coloring.

The tiny particles of food coloring
filled out the spaces in the water
molecules.
D. Generalization
What can you say about the particles of
water?

Tiny particles of water have spaces in

between so the tiny solid particles like
sugar and food coloring can filled out
the spaces of water molecules.

IV. Evaluation
In a 1/4 sheet of paper, explain how the particles of sugar and food color filled in the
gaps of water molecules. Give at least 3 or more sentences to explain your answer.
