The Holy Eucharist as a Sacrifice

Worship:

To understand that Christ is the priest and victim in the

Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist
To live our priestly mission by offering our daily activities
To imitate Christs self-giving love by willingly and lovingly
offer sacrifices for our neighbor
To live a lifestyle that centered in prayer and offering
To participate the Eucharistic sacrifice activity and
meaningfully

All our daily actions are fittingly offered to the Father along with the
Body of the Lord in Eucharistic Celebration. The mass can UNIFY and DEEPEN
our ordinary activities by consecrating them to God. (CFC 1743)
It is the celebration that commemorates Christs passion, death and
resurrection, a total self-giving for the salvation of humanity. This he did in
order to perpetuate the sacrifice of the cross throughout the ages until he
should come again, and so to entrust to his beloved Spouse, the Church, a
memorial of his death and resurrection: a sacrament of love, a sign of unity,
a bond of charity, a Paschal banquet 'in which Christ is consumed, the mind
is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory is given to us.'"
(SACROSANCTUM CONCILIUM 47)
The holy Eucharist completes Christian initiation. Those who have
been raised to the dignity of the royal priesthood by Baptism and configured
more deeply to Christ by Confirmation participate with the whole community
in the Lord's own sacrifice by means of the Eucharist. (CCC 1322)

The story of Muelmar Magallanes
The rain and violent wind came lashing down in the afternoon of Sept.
26, 2009. Typhoon Ondoy had reached Metro Manila and was wreaking
havoc everywhere, especially in the low-lying areas. All rivers began to
overflow and break their banks, carrying aggressive waves, garbage of all
sorts of pieces of furnitures and even vehicles.
Foreseeing the worst, Muelmar Magallanes, a young construction
worker from Bagong Silang grabbed his 3 younger sibling and carried them
to a higher ground. He brought also his own mother Maria Luz and his father

Samuel. Soon after, he continued doing the same with neighbors, no less
than 30 persons in all he was able to find refuge in the rooftop of nearby
houses.
His saving mission accomplished, an exhausted Muelmar sat down for
a while to rest. However, a scream from a violent water whipped him up, a
woman holding tightly her small baby girl was being swept away from the
current. Unmindful of the danger, Muelman dove again into the river and
succeeded in carrying the woman and the child safely.
The following day, Sunday, his lifeless body was washed ashore, along
with many other victims of Ondoy. The Philippines had in him a new
genuine hero in heaven, a new martyr of charity.
The bravery of Muelmar shows the heights to which human spirit can
soar and the heroic selflessness to which Christian Charity can lead. The
young worker is remembered with admiration by all and with immense
gratitude by those who owe him their lives.
Jesus Christ did immensely more than Muelmar, as he offered His own
life for salvation of all human being.

Lk 22:14-20
The Eucharistic celebration is also known as the Holy Sacrifice of the
mass or the Holy Eucharist. The Eucharist is the renewal of Christs Sacrifice
of His Passover and the NEW COVENANT, by Him and us, HIS CHURCH. At
LAST SUPPER, on the night He was betrayed, Jesus instituted the Eucharistic
Sacrifice of His BODY and BLOOD. He did this in order to proclaim the
Sacrifice of the Cross throughout the ages until He will come again. In this
way, He entrusted to the Church the MEMORIAL of His death and
resurrection: a Sacrament of Love, a sign of Unity, a bond of Charity, a
Paschal Banquet and a pledge of Future Glory.
The Holy Sacrifice, because it makes present the one sacrifice of Christ
the Savior and includes the Church's offering. The terms holy sacrifice of the
Mass, "sacrifice of praise," spiritual sacrifice, pure and holy sacrifice are also
used, since it completes and surpasses all the sacrifices of the Old Covenant.
(CCC 1330)
Christ is the PRIEST and VICTIM of the Eucharistic Sacrifice. Jesus offers
Himself: This is my body This is my blood Thus, He is both offerer, priest
and the offering, sacrifice and the victim.

The Eucharist is the concrete expression of Christs unconditional love

for all, This is my body broken fro you My blood poured out for you
Jesus calls us to commit ourselves of His mission of giving life to the world.
The lay faithful are sharers in the priestly mission, for which Jesus
offered Himself on the Cross and continues to be offered in the celebration of
the Eucharist. Incorporated in Jesus Christ, the Baptized are united to Him
and to His SACRIFICE in the offering they make themselves and their daily
activities (cfr. Rm 12:2), pain, joy, cooking, teaching, spiritual and physical
activities, etc. if carried out all in the spirit, all these become spiritual
sacrifice acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. (cfr. 1Pt 2:5)
During the celebration of the Eucharist these sacrifices are lovingly
offered to the Father along with the Lords Body, as worshippers whose every
deed is holy, the lay faithful consecrate the world itself to God.
The Eucharist, the sacrament of our salvation accomplished by Christ
on the cross, is also a sacrifice of praise in thanksgiving for the work of
creation. In the Eucharistic sacrifice the whole of creation loved by God is
presented to the Father through the death and the Resurrection of Christ.
Through Christ the Church can offer the sacrifice of praise in thanksgiving for
all that God has made good, beautiful, and just in creation and in humanity.
(CCC 1359)
St. Paul exhort us To offer our body as a living sacrifice, holy pleasing
to God as our spiritual worship, Jesus offered Himself as a sacrifice which
replaced all the sacrifices of the Old Covenant. He wants our body in
communion with His Body, so that it becomes the Glory of God, the LITURGY
OF LIFE. Through this offering we become with Jesus the true worshippers, in
the Spirit and Truth.

Remain in Me
When Jesus came into the world, He said, Sacrifices and offerings you
have not desired, but body you have prepared for me, burn offerings you
have taken no pleasure. Then I said, Behold, I come to do your will.
The offering of oneself is not a ritual or exterior act of worship, but a
free and interior act of love and gratitude to God our creator and donor of
life.
Therefore, if we want to make the Holy Eucharist more meaningful and
relevant to our lives, if we want it of greater influence in our way of living.
We have to see it from the point of view of giving more that receiving,
because sharing the Eucharist means joining actively with Christ would be

the expression of our immense self-giving love of God, with Christ may we be
able to say to our neighbors.
Eatdrink This is my body This is my blood This is me for
you
Ang Eukaristiya ay hindi lang biyaya ito ay Misyon, isang
pananagutan.
We who receive the Eucharist, just like the bread and wine, are
substantially transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ. We must be
transformed and become food and drink ourselves by helping the
needy, taking care of the sick, the elderly and the abandoned.
We must be transformed and become good news to others by
giving hope to those who despair, affirmation to those who are discourage,
inspiration to those who are weak.
We must be transformed and become Christs love a love for those
who are lost, least and the last.

The Life of Dylan Wilk
Many people make good promises that purely remain in words but not
in action, while some people seldom talk but can genuinely show great
concern to the needy through their charitable act.
Dylan Wilk is an example of a man of few words, yet very active in
supporting the charitable projects of GAWAD KALINGA, a non-government
organization responsible for building houses for the poor. This 33-year old
British national is one of the most successful businessmen in the United
Kingdom, yet he gave up his lavish lifestyle to help the needy and the
homeless Filipinos.

He sold his computer game company in England and his Silver M3

BMW equivalent to 3.2 million to start his housing project in Payatas and in
Bulacan. With that amount he was able to build 80 houses for 600 people in
Bulacan. For hum a BMW meant 80 houses for the poor.
His deep concern for the poor motivated him to sell all that he had and
to share his blessing to the unfortunate people and enjoy a simple life with
them.
Wilks living example inspired Filipinos and foreigners and has given
hope to those in need.

To understand that the Eucharist is a sacrament of Unity

To preserve unity at home, in school and in the
To attend the Eucharistic celebration with whole family

Do your best to preserve the unity which the Spirit gives by means of
peace that bids you together. There is one body and one Spirit just as there
is one hope to which God has called you. (Eph. 4:3-4)
Divisions is a serious problem people are experiencing in all parts of
the world. Broken families, racial discrimination, wars, terrorism, gap
between rich and the marginalized, government destabilization, etc.
Division and separation greatly affect growth and development, while
unity can make human life peaceful and happy. The Eucharist is a sign and
instrument of UNITY.
"The Eucharist is the efficacious sign and sublime cause of that
communion in the divine life and that unity of the People of God by which
the Church is kept in being. It is the culmination both of God's action
sanctifying the world in Christ and of the worship men offer to Christ and
through him to the Father in the Holy Spirit." (CCC 1325)

The Edsa Revolution
Cardinal Jaime Sin, former Archibishop of Manila, was the principal
figure in People Power movement in 1986. As freedom and justice
advocator, he led one million people in forming barricades, blocking the
military to avoid a bloody revolution. Through his leadership, the Filipinos
won their battle in changing the existing dictatorial form of government to a
democratic one.
The example of the Philippines nonviolent revolution influenced other
countries in following the same movement. The name Jaime Cardinal Sin
becomes pride not only in the Filipinos but of the whole Church. He became
famous not only in the entire nation but globally as well. He was known for
his commitment in spreading the Gospel, promotion of human dignity,
common good and national unity of Filipino people.

Learn from Me
Acts 2:43-47
St. Paul consistently reminded the believer to remain faithful to the
apostles instruction and communal life, to the breaking of the bread and to
prayer.
Christ instituted the Eucharist so that all of us who shared in His body
and blood might become one body with Him, it becomes meal of
communion, a sign of unity and a bond of charity.

Foster unity and charity in the community:

Christ used natural elements of the meal. Coming together,
conversing and sharing of food and drink together to bring His saving
and loving presence among us. The food we take in this meal
symbolizes unity. The bread and wine product of many hands.
In the liturgy, we pray and sing together. We are joined together as we
offer our common gift and receive Gods gift to us. The Holy Eucharist
is the great cause of our unity.
We are scattered in different places. At the Holy Mass, we come
together for the great banquet that makes us one. The people of God
gathered together with Christ. We gather as brother and sisters of

Jesus. He is the one who has called us and who has shared his life with
us. We gather in His table in order to be fed in His Word and with His
flesh.
In the Eucharistic Prayer, after the memorial acclamation, we invoke
the Holy Spirit to transform us: We pray that we who share in the
body and blood of Christ might truly become one body and one Spirit
in Him. This prayer is a reminder that the purpose of the Holy Mass is
to make us one, so that we might be seen to be the true body of Christ.
The Holy Communion gives us share in Christs Life, bonding us and
making all of us more fruitful branches on His vine.
The Eucharist is the greatest way to grow in Christian Life. there are 7
essential actions that we are encouraged to practice in our daily life.
1. Being Sorry The celebration begins with calling to mind our
sins. We apologize to those we have hurt or have done wrong.
2. Listening Listening to Gods words, homilies and prayers.
3. Caring Showing care for other people, expressed in the Prayers
of the Faithful.
4. Thanking For giving and sending Gods son Jesus Christ to
us, and giving Jesus Himself to us
5. Making Peace Forgiven those who hurt us and in return as
forgiveness to all we have hurt
6. Sharing In Holy Communion, God our Fathers shares His life
with us. We are expected to share our life with the other.
7. Going Forth We go forth to the world taking with us Jesus
message of love, peace and healing.
The Eucharist is the summit and the center of Church worship. In the
Liturgy of the Holy Mass, we express our faith in the real presence of
Christ under the species of bread and wine. We receive the
consecrated host with outmost care, showing our respect and love by
kneeling, bowing deeply as sign of adoration (CCC 1378)
The Sacrifice of the Mass is therefore the greatest possible act of divine
worship. It is the only form of sacrifice now acceptable to God. The
power to offer Mass is the greatest power of the Catholic priest.
However, the members cf. the laity should remember that they too
have a share in the offering of this divine sacrifice. It is in their name
that the priest officiates; they offer the body and blood of Our Savior to
His eternal Father through the hands of the priest. And the more
fervently they participate in the offering of the Mass, the more benefits
they will receive from this precious sacrifice by which the death of our
Redeemer on Calvary is daily represented and its benefits applied on
thousands of altars throughout the Catholic Church.

The more actively and intimately a person participates in the offering

of the Mass, the greater benefits will he derive. Thus, a boy who serves
Mass or a person who sings in the choir will partake more abundantly
of the fruits of the Holy Sacrifice, other things being equal, than one
who merely assists as a member of the congregation.

How to improve

Witness
Mahatma Gandhi is a simple ordinary person like most people. Yet this
small modest man was universally known for his heroic act in leading his
fellow Indians fighting for justice and freedom.
He led thousands of Indian men and women, and children in their
march to the sea to prove that the sea salt belong to all and not for the
British consumption. Fifteen thousand Indians were massacred at Amritsan
by British troop Gandhi remained strong and firm in his mission of uplifting
the human condition of his race.
In his struggle, he fought the British empty handed. The weapons and
shield he used were prayer and his genuine love for humanity. He founded no
Church but principles and the prayer life he exemplified gave hope and
courage to the entire Indian race.

People will not only remembered him as patriot, politician and a nation
builder but a man of strong faith and a leader who offered his whole life for
the welfare of many people.
Reflection Points
