MANILA -- Considered as one of the most colorful generations of all time, the '90s
produced trends that can bring nostalgic smiles to millennials.
Often labeled as privileged because of having enjoyed the best of both worlds, these
lucky kids who lived through the decade witnessed the transition from the old '80s
fashion, to the tech-driven world of the 2000s.
Many of these '90s kids enjoyed exciting technological advancements that brought more
fun to their play. But apart from that, they also experienced a unique cultural period that
will surely remain deeply embedded in their hearts.
Let's look back at some of the most iconic trends that defined a generation.

1. Music

The '90s were responsible for many timeless hits. Back in the day, young girls fawned
over the Backstreet Boys, who will be remembered for swoon-worthy tracks like "I Want
It That Way," "As Long As You Love Me," and "Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely."
They were also able to relate to songs from The Spice Girls such as "Wannabe,"
"Mama," and "2 Become 1."
Meanwhile, "hugot" songs by bands like Oasis, Green Day, and Goo Goo Dolls were
also the trend among teenagers. In the Philippines, rock music flourished with the birth
of the Eraserheads. The band defined a generation of alternative rock music fans, with
classics like "Ang Huling El Bimbo," "Ligaya," "Magasin," and "Pare Ko." Up to this day,
these songs remain popular among high school and college students.
Pop bands Side A, Rivermaya, and South Border were also very popular.

2. TV shows

Cartoons and series shown on TV were also very popular with this generation, since
Netflix and other on-demand streaming websites weren't even born yet. It was in the
'90s when the "Powerpuff Girls" and "The Simpsons" reached peak popularity. American
TV network Nickelodeon also started producing kid-friendly shows like "Blues Clues,"
"Rugrats," and "Hey, Arnold!"
For Filipino '90s teens, they will surely remember the hit afternoon series "Tabing Ilog,"
which featured Paula Peralejo, John Lloyd Cruz, Patrick Garcia, Jodi Sta. Maria, Paolo
Contis, Desiree del Valle, Baron Geisler and Kaye Abad. And of course, one would be
hardpressed to forget Noli de Castro's very popular weekend show "Magandang Gabi,
Bayan." Everyone looked forward to its scary episodes every Halloween.
3. Video games and Tamagotchi

Video games were also a big hit among kids. Since Facebook and Twitter didn't even
exist yet, most of the kids found good time playing with their home consoles such as the
Nintendo 64 and the original PlayStation. Among the most popular games during this
time were Super Mario, Final Fantasy, and Tekken.
In the late '90s, the Game Boy was launched, making several beloved games from
Nintendo readily available in an handheld electronic device. Some also enjoyed raising
their virtual pets through this little gadget called the Tamagotchi.

4. 90s fashion & style

In the fashion scene, the '90s is considered as the "Year of the Denim." Baggy and
ripped jeans were popular during this decade, as well as denim jackets and chain
wallets. Striped sweaters, jumpsuits, and unbuttoned flannel shirts were also a hit
among teenagers.
As for style, boys loved growing their hair and parting it down the middle. This was
popularized by American heartthrobs Rider Strong, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Devon Sawa,
and Jonathan Taylor Thomas. Spiked hair with highlights was also considered stylish at
that time. Girls, meanwhile, loved wearing chokers and flare pants.

5. Carnivals

Even during the '90s, kids already loved the weekends. For many, especially those who
live near Metro Manila, weekend meant going to carnivals and theme parks.
There was the Big Bang sa Alabang, Payanig sa Pasig, Glicos, and Boom Na Boom in
Pasay. In 1995, Enchanted Kingdom, the biggest theme park in the country at that time,
opened, instantly becaming a hit not just among those who live in Laguna, but also to
those from neighboring provinces.
But of course, the '90s experience will never be complete without the colorful, fruity
snacks everyone loved. Outings, road trips, gigs, and games would not be as fun
without the well-loved Mentos flavors: Mint, Spearmint, Air Action, Fruit, and Rainbow.

So to keep this tradition alive and bring you the nostalgic taste of the '90s, Mentos is
launching the Soda Kick which comes in fizzified strawberry, melon, lemon, and grape
flavors.
This new variant aims to refresh your connections with your throwback buddies by
giving your Facebook Memories with them a little fizz!
