Standards: Integrate visual information: CCSS.ELA.LITERACY.RH.6-8.7, Identify key steps in a texts
description of a process related to history/social studies. CCSS.ELA.LITERACY.RH.6-8.3, 8-U4.2.3 Western
expansion of the United States.

Objectives: Students will be able to explain to their fellow peers about the area Zebulon Pike
discovered for America. Students will be able to explain why General James Wilkinson wanted
Mr. Pike to explore the area for America.
Assessment (Formative, Summative): Formative: The students will be asked questions over the
information read in the activity. Summative: The students will test their knowledge in a summative game
of jeopardy.

Introduction/Hook:
1. Students will be answering the questions on the page that they are picked up when the
students come into the class.
2. Students will talk with their shoulder partner about who and what they would bring on an
exploration to discover the near area the United States purchased.
Steps in the lesson:
1. The students will take out the Zebulon Pikes Expedition packet.
2. Students will be randomly called but the students will be able to pass if they do not want
to read.
3. I will pull out a random popsicle stick and the student will read the first paragraph.
4. Once the student has finished the paragraph I will touch quickly on who they brought and
what the class thought about bringing with them.
5. The second paragraph will be read by another student by the pulling another popsicle
stick.
6. After the second paragraph is read, the students will talk to their shoulder partner where
the Osage and Pawnee Indians are located and what the word allegiances mean.
7. As a group, we will go over where the Osage and Pawnee Indians are located and what
does the word allegiances mean.
8. The third paragraph will be read by a student that was selected by a popsicle stick.
9. After the third paragraph, I will show on the map of the United States where the Arkansas
River and the Red River are located.
10.The students will turn to their shoulder partner and discuss why the Arkansas and Red
Rivers were tactical and physical resources the United States can review.
11.Then as a class we will go into a brief discussion why those Rivers were tactical and
physical resources the United States could use.
12.A student will read the fourth paragraph at random by a popsicle stick with their name
on.
13.Students will turn to their shoulder partner and discus what the word confluence
means.
14.The students and I will talk about what confluence means.
15.A student will be chosen at random by a popsicle stick to read paragraph five.
16.The students and I will look at the map where Vernon County, Missouri.
17.A student will be chosen at random to read paragraph six.
18. A student will read paragraph seven at random by pulling a popsicle stick.
19.After the student reads, we will discuss as a group how that situation in the paragraph will

play out if we were there.


20.Then we will come together as a group and talk about how the students would react to
this event.
21.A student will read chapter seven at random when a popsicle is pulled.
22.Once the student finishes reading, we will talk about what the main idea of the final
paragraph was.

The students will retrieve the computers from the cart.


Students will log onto quizlet.com to do a 5 minuet study session.
Then students will log onto quizlet.live and play the game.
The winning group will have the opportunity for first choice of candy.

Assessment (Formative, Summative):


The class will do quizlet game as a summative assessment over what we have learned and what
we have learned in prior lessons.

Differentiation:
What will I differentiate? I will differentiate my lesson plan by the process I present the
information.
How will I differentiate? I will change between reading, discussion, and group collaboration.
All the ideas are to spark interest in the idea of Zebulon Pike.
Specific Student / Group: The groups are random so Mrs. Saladin will help Charles, Mrs.
Rogers will help Hunter in participation and I will help Caillou along with working with the whole
group.
