Lesson 6: Data Cafe

Materials:
Copy paper (colored copy paper if available)
Stapler
Scissors
Copy machine or printer
PowerPoint presentation
Computer
Projector

Objective:
To help parents understand their childs elementary school assessments. Parents will
learn about each assessment and have a resource to take home.

Procedure:

Print the Parent Sign-in Sheet for parents to sign at Data Caf. The Parent Signin form can be found in the additional resources on pages 107-108.
Print and copy Parent exit questionnaires/surveys (you can find a parent sign in
form in the additional resources on page 109.
Print the Family Data Caf fliers in English/Spanish and enter the dates and times
you are going to host the event.
Copy the fliers and send home with families.
Before the event, print out the Data Flip-books in English and Spanish.

Procedure Continued:

Cut and assemble the Flip-books in advance so that parents can be ready to
learn about the data.
Directions for assembly of the flip-books are on the first page flip-book resource.
Be familiar with the data on the flip-book.
Prepare a PowerPoint or poster that also reflects the information in the flip-book.
You can find an English/Spanish PowerPoint to match this project on the
resource website: http://bilingualfamilyengagement.weebly.com/.
Ask your office to schedule an interpreter for your event if necessary and
provide the interpreter with the materials.
On the day of the event, greet your parents and welcome everyone to the Caf.
Distribute a flip-book to each parent/family.
Present each set of data from the flip-book with the PowerPoint or poster for this
event.
Provide coffee and cookies for the parents to enjoy during the event.
Ask parents to fill out the exit questionnaire/survey to evaluate the event and
reflect upon it.
Note this event can be an evening or morning event depending on what suits
your school and parent needs.

Maintain a Parent Sign-in Sheet for your records.
Give the Parent Exit Survey and reflect on the parent feedback.

flip-book.
Parent friendly language is used to describe and explain the assessments.
