The vision: a sustainable future

The city: Vienna, 1.8 million people

The commitment: transformation into a smart city

Today Vienna is the city with the highest quality of living worldwide. This has been
stated by several international surveys, e.g. Mercer 2010 Quality of Living
Survey.
My clear goal now is to become the Greenest City in the world. Therefore we will
build Aspern - Viennas Urban Lakeside, one of the biggest city development
projects in Europe, as core part of our strategy.

aspern Seestadt Wien living lab offers a unique opportunity

to conduct research on a real site

Concrete steps towards Smart City

Development and implementation of systems in a real
city environment, hand-in-hand with an integrated
district planning (spatial planning, energy planning
and mobility planning)
Demonstration of the performance of these systems
Access to real data of customers, buildings and
networks
Direct feedback from citizens, building operators
and energy suppliers
Risk minimization during the development of
customer proximity and real environment
(reduced time-to-market)
Better use of the innovation potential through
participatory approach of all stakeholders

Aspern Smart City Research R&D focus areas

Security of supply
Energy must always be reliable
and affordable

Renewable Energy
Integration and management of
renewable energy sources to
reduce CO2 and increase energy
efficiency

Low voltage grid control

In the future, millions of small power
producers feed electricity into the grid. The
low voltage grid provides stability in the
network and balances production and
consumption.

Consumption Control
Demand Management;
Power consumption in real-time to
adapt to price fluctuations; Smart
meters

Energy storage
Efficiently use of Energy
Reducing energy consumption, intelligent control
and energy management of multimodal
distribution networks and building mgmt. will lead
to high savings

R&D program supported by Teradata

LINEAR SCALABILITY
Variable and undefined data sources as well as the effective amount of data are partially unknown at the beginning
of R&D program - DWH end users needs will be elaborated during the R&D program

LOGICAL DATA MODEL

Research derives from different starting points and will converge at a certain phase in the project.
The logical data model as blueprint for the DWH physical data model allows flexibility at the project set up even
considering unclear data sources and attributes at the beginning

In-Database features
Teradata database offers various capabilities needed in the research project such as temporal feature, several
aggregation and calculation features and In-Database statistics functionality with R

TERADATA LAB
Within the research program it was very important to provide the business owners a tool that allows easy
integration of new information to existing structures in order to evaluate the use of new data sources.

aspern Seestadt Wien acts as a test lab for new developments

The infrastructure of the Seestadt Vienna is partially adapted to the

needs of research and development

The test lab offers the ideal conditions for participating in

demonstration and implementation projects in the framework of
national and international support

The proximity to customers and end users and the opportunity to

test developments on the target systems, can:

Development cycles are optimized

The economic benefits of the new solutions are evaluated

Tests are performed, whether the new products / solutions

(data center) can also be rolled out to existing infrastructure
