Classroom Management Plan:

BAND STANDARD:
Students who are enrolled and actively participating in the band program must always strive to
represent the band with the highest standards of excellence in mind. Conduct in and out of school
represents the image of the band at all times. This includes in and out of rehearsals,
performances, trips, and in all other academic classroom settings.
What will be provided from the instructor(s):
If every student comes to class every day with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn, then
the rest will be reciprocated from the instructional staff. It is our job to teach every student who
walks into the classroom, regardless of any background or situation that the students face outside
of band. Our environment will be set up as the following:
-

The band hall will always be organized in an orderly manner. All instruments, stands, chairs
will be properly stored. This will allow for less clutter and less distraction as the students

enter and participate in rehearsal.

Students will be greeted at the door before class begins. This will start every day with a

positive interaction from the instructor before rehearsal starts.

Although students must not speak aloud during rehearsal, there will be time to socialize
when transitioning between pieces or activities. The instructor will step away from the
podium signaling students that it is okay to talk and rest for a moment. When the instructor
steps back up to the podium, the students are expected to engage back into the rehearsal.

The following listed are the classroom standards of behavior that will ensure ensemble and
student success. All disciplinary infractions will be documented by the instructor according to
district policy. Disciplinary actions can lead to personal interaction with the instructor(s),
administration, and family of the student.
Students will:

Walk in the band hall quietly after being greeted.

Be polite and treat everyone around you with respect.
Have all necessary supplies for class. This includes your instrument, sticks, pencil, and

binder with music/method books.

Only handle and play their personally assigned instrument.
Be ready to play as soon as rehearsal begins, or by the time the instructor is ready to step

on the podium
Maintain proper posture while playing.
Raise hand instead of interrupting the class.
Take instrument home every day to practice.
Have a nametag on the instrument case at all times (issued by teacher).
Leave empty instrument case and back pack in lockers before rehearsal starts.
Keep their locker locked at all times outside of rehearsal
Keep instruments in cases when not in rehearsal or practicing.
Keep all personal belongings besides instrument and supplies out of music locker.
Return music stands and chairs to their proper racks at the end of the day.
Follow all school procedures, rules and policies in and out of the rehearsal.

REWARDS: Students that continually follow by the rules will be given star stickers that can be
traded in for instrument supplies if an appropriate amount are collected.
These prizes/supplies include but are not limited to the following:
-

Reeds
Valve Oil
Slide Grease
Stick Tape
Flavored Reeds

Consequences for continuous maladaptive behavior:

Each individual student will refer to the handbook for appropriate behavior. The severity of the
infraction will determine the appropriate disciplinary result. Otherwise the natural order of
disciple will be the following:

The student will be given a verbal warning.

The student will be asked to put their instrument up.
The student will be given lunch and/or after school detention
The student and the teacher will have a personal conference outside of rehearsal
The teacher will contact the students parent
The students parent and the teacher will have a personal conference outside of rehearsal
Referral to principal.

After every infraction the student will be given the next step of discipline.
When dealing with the administration, the student will have referred to the handbook for
appropriate conduct while in band. I will make sure the administration knows that I can handle
my own class, but at this point the student has continuously shown behavior that is representative
of inappropriate behavior in my classroom and has shown no desire to improve their attitude or
their actions.

As an instructor to these students, I am fully confident that I have established a very basic
but strong foundation for expectations, rules and consequences for the classroom. The
environment will not be a hostile one, but rather an environment where students should want to
become better musicians and to have a good time while doing so. However, the students will
need to know that even though it is an extracurricular activity, it is still expected that they treat
the classroom just as any other academic environment. This means showing respect for the
instructors, demonstrating the behavior outlined in the handbook, and showing up with an
attitude representative of their readiness to work.
