CourseRationale:
WelcometoMath103!Thismathematicscoursefocusesondevelopingessential
mathematicsknowledge,skills,andattitudesneededforstudentswhowanttoapprentice
toatradeorentertheworkforcedirectlyafterhighschool.Itisdesignedtomeetthe
entrancerequirementsforapprenticesinmosttradesprograms,specificallylevelsoneto
three.Mathematics3includestopicssuchasfinance,geometry,measurement,and
trigonometry.
Yourmathematicsskillswillbedevelopedwithinthecontextofsolvingeverydayproblems.
Youwill:
*identifytheproblemandselectandapplyappropriateproblemsolvingstrategies,
mathematicaloperations,andtools.
*estimateandcalculatesolutionsaccurately
*evaluatetheprocess,result,andpersonal/groupperformance
*developteamworkskills,anduseappropriatevocabularytoreasonand

thiscourseisonthedevelopmentandstrengtheningofmathematicalskills,lateness/absenteeismcancreate
problemsforyourprogress.Theconceptswecoverthatdaymaybeconfusingtoyouwhenyoureturn
pleasemakesurethatyouattendclasseveryday.Ifyouhavepriorknowledgetoyouwillbeabsent(dueto
medicalreasonsorotherappropriatereasons)PLEASEseemeassoonaspossiblesothatwecanworkoutan
actionplantoensureyoudonotfallbehind.Wehavea76minflexblocktousetoensureallstudentsare
caughtup.

AssignmentDueDates
Mostassignmentswillbeduethedaythatweareworkingonthem.Occasionallyyouwillbegivenafewdays
tofinishanassignment.Sinceourconceptsbuildoneachother,ifyoufallbehind,youwillbeaskedtostayin
duringflexblocktocompletethem.
AssignmentsNotCompletedorNotHandedIn
TheHolySpiritDivisionAssessmentPolicystatesthefollowing:Astudentsfailuretosubmitworkisacritical
behaviouralanddisciplineissueasdefinedbytheSchoolActinthatastudentshallconducthimselforherself
soastoreasonablycomplywiththefollowingcodeofconduct:(a)bediligentinpursuingthestudents
studies.
TeachersatCatholicCentralhavedeterminedthefollowingprocedurestobeusedifastudentdoesnothand
inwork:
(1)Alternativeswillbediscussedwithstudentsuchasanalternativeduedate,alternativeassignment,after
schoolorlunchtimetocompletetheassignment,etc.
(2)Parentswillbecontactedbytheteacherandalternativesdiscussed.
(3)Thestudentwillbereferredtoadministrationoracounselortodiscussreasonsforworknotbeing
completed.
(4)Workingwiththestudent,parents,teacherand,ifnecessary,administrationamutuallyagreeablesolution
willbereached.
Note:Assignmentsareonemethodbywhichteachersdeterminethatastudenthasacquiredthedesignated
learneroutcomesforacourse.Incompleteassignmentsjeopardizethestudentscompletionofthecourse.
Ifastudentdoesnotdemonstratethathe/shehasacquiredthelearneroutcomes,thenacoursemarkwillnot
beawardedtothestudent.Thestudentmaywritethefinalexam,butnocoursemarkcanbeawardeduntil
thestudenthasdemonstratedacquisitionofthelearneroutcomes.

Cellphonesaretobeturnedoffandplacedoutofsightduringclasstime.
Ifastudentisinviolationofthispolicy,he/shewillhavethecellphoneand/orelectroniccommunicationdevice
takenaway.Firstviolationofthispolicywillresultinconfiscationbytheteacher.Subsequentviolationswill
resultinthephonebeingkeptbyadministrationuntilafterschool.Studentswhocontinuetodefythepolicy
willhavetheirphonesconfiscatedandthephonewillremainattheofficeuntilaparentmeetswith
administration.Theremaybetimeswhenstudentsareallowedtousedevices,andyouwillbeinformedof
thesetimes.Ifthestudenthasnotbeeninformedthathe/sheisallowedtousethem,itistheirresponsibility
tomakesuretheyareputaway.
