Engine Dynamometer
One of the most important types of Dynamometer is the Engine
dynamometer. It is directly attached to the engine of the car. Chassis
dynamometer is another type of specific dynamometer, which is used to measure
the twisting movement (torque) and the power or the energy emitted by the
power train of an automobile directly from the wheels or the drive wheels. This
should be done without the removal of the engine from the framework of the
vehicle.
EC Dynamometer
EC dynamometer is the most commonly used dynamometer in modern
Chassis dynos in the present days. They are capable of changing the load most
efficiently at a rapid speed. Most of them require an external cooling system
where as some, although very few, have an automatic cooling system.
Power Dynamometer
Power dynamometer is another kind, which is very similar to eddy
current. The only difference between the former and the latter is that a magnetic
powder is present in the space between the coil and the rotor. The fluctuation
lines generate metal chains, which are continuously built up and are broken due
to the twisting movement (torque). The speed of the power dynamometer is
restricted due to the indulgence of heat.
Hysteresis Dynamometer
The third important type of absorption dynamometer is Hysteresis
dynamometer. It uses the rotor made of steel, which moves in between the
fluctuation lines, which are further in between magnetic poles. It enables the
torque to be produced at the speed of zero and also in full speed. The air that is
forced in produces heat. Electric motor or the Generator motor is also another
type. It adjusts the speed of the drive.
Applications:
Small Engine
On-Road and Off Road Drive Trains
Compressors and Air Starters
Fuels and Lubricants
Electric Motors
Generators and Alternators
Turbine Engines
Gears and Gear Boxes
Fluid leak detection
Tachometer
A tachometer is a device that is used for measuring the total revolutions
per minute of the drive shaft and this way determining the speed of that shaft.
Analog Tachometer
These Tachometers are very simple and easy to determine speed from
these Tachometers. These comprises of needle giving the current reading and
have marking that show safe and dangerous level. They cannot store the readings
and compute details like deviation and average.
D.C Tachometer
D.C means Direct Current .This tachometer is basically a permanent
magnet generator .The output of this types of instrument is 2 to 10 volts per
1,000 rev per min (RPM) .For the purpose of Speed indication, a voltmeter with a
high resistant value is built with calibration in RPM.
AC Tachometer
AC is for alternating current. This device consists of revolving permanentmagnetic field with a stationary winding. The voltage output and frequency that is
generated remains in proportion rotation speed.
Mechanical Tachometer
This tachometer is very simple in construction .Mechanical tachometer is
nothing but a linkage of shafts, gears and rotating weights. The main drawbacks
of this device are. The mechanical weights have inertia and therefore the output
is not very accurate. This type does not indicate about the direction of rotation.
Digital tachometers
These consist of LCD or LED readout .They also has a memory for storage.
(Major advantage over Analog type) .These are used to perform statistical
operations and gives precision measurement. Digital tachometers are getting
more preference these days as they provide accurate reading in numerical form
instead of using dials and needles.
