Teacher Candidate:

Shelby Dozier

Date: 12/3/2016

Grade and Topic:

Fourth grade Life Science

Length of Lesson: 40 mins for 3 days

Mentor Teacher:

Claire Knowles

School: University of Memphis

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

All living things are made of cells that perform functions necessary for life.
LESSON OBJECTIVE:

To recognize that cells are the building blocks of all living things.

To understand how plant and animal cells contribute to living things life
To understand how the plant and animal cell differ in structure and function.
STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
State performance indicates that students should be able to compare basic structures of plant and cells. SPI
0407.1.100
MATERIALS:
Computer, worksheet, links provided

TLW explore the sites, and play games while learning about cells.
The links: www.cellsalive.com
www.neoK12.com
www.thesciencelab.co.uk

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

The key concepts for the lesson are to be able to identify which organelles belong in which cell

To identify the functions of each organelle

This concept will help students understand that without cells and their organelles, living things could not
function
This lesson will help students move on to how animals and life forms interact with one another within an
environment
Some students may not catch on as quickly as their other classmates, therefore they will need assistance, so I
will create alternate assignments
PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:
Introduction: In order to keep the students motivated and focused, I will give them the incentive, that the each
student will have to present their work and their work will be displayed in the hallway.
Procedures: TLW do research on plant and animal cells by using the sites provided, they will be researching
and learning about the cells then put that knowledge to work by creating their own comic strip and graphic
organizer
Teacher procedures:
Step One: Given links to explore TLW partner up and begin researching
Step Two: TLW be taught how to navigate through ToonDoo and I will answer any questions
*ToonDoo must illustrate one fact learned about BOTH animal and plant cell
Step Three: TLW begin their comic strip with their partner

*Concludes day one on this assignment*

Step Four: They will be given a mini lesson on graphic organizers on inspiration and shown
an example
*Graphic Organizer must contain 5 facts in each part. The idea is to compare and contrast plant
and animal cell organelles
Step Five: They will begin their graphic organizer
*Concludes day two on this assignment*
Step Six: Partners will then show their assignments to the teacher and make any changes
necessary
Step Seven: Presentation order will be given out
Step Eight: Begin presentations
Step Nine: TLW be given matching worksheet and this will be an individual assignment
*Student Procedures:
Step One: Find a partner and a computer
Step Two: Visit link provided and learn about cells!
Step Three: Begin ToonDoo comic strip
*save all work for next class*
Step Four: Listen to graphic organizer lesson
Step Five: Consult with partner about what will be on graphic organizer
*save all work for next class*
Step Six: Show work to teacher and make any adjustments
Step Seven: Prepare for presentations
Step Eight: Complete matching worksheet

Closure: TLW will give presentation and complete a matching worksheet as well as answer questions teacher
asks during presentation. For example: What does the plant cell have that an animal cell does not? or vice
versa

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:

Matching worksheet to identify which organelles belong to which cell

Presentations in front of class to show comic strip and graphic organizer

MODIFICATIONS:

There will be one on one tutoring offered for those I felt did not master the activities or lesson

For the students that mastered the lesson with no compilations will be given the opportunity to tutor their peers.
