The South Jersey National Society of the Children of the
American Revolution is the oldest
patriotic youth organization in
the United States, and one of the
few active South Jersey branches
is named after Haddonfields
founding mother Elizabeth Haddon.
The society celebrated its 85th
anniversary last Sunday at the Indian King Tavern and received a
proclamation from the borough
last month for the occasion.
(The Elizabeth Haddon Society) is special because it has been
around for so long. Its cool that
(Haddonfield) was around when
the war was going on, Elizabeth
Haddon Society president and
Moorestown eighth grader Carly
Kramer said.
Right out here is where the
British and patriots were walking
up and down the streets; it is really cool, senior president and

New Jersey American Water

held two public meetings for residents who will be affected by
water and sewer improvements
in Haddonfield. The meetings
were held for Coles Mill Road and
Roberts Avenue residents, as the
existing water and sewer utilities
would be replaced near these
areas.
Senior Project Engineer Jeff
DeRusso and Stephanie Cuthbert
of Remington and Vernick spoke
at the Roberts Avenue meeting on
Monday, Nov. 28, letting residents
know what will be done and what
the project will look like, and to
answer any questions residents
had.
The $2.5 million Roberts Avenue project will replace and relocate the lift station near there, as

in our opinion

Police provide online protection

All departments should help online buyers and sellers with safe zones
s the holiday shopping season
is now officially underway, police departments across the
country are on high alert. Thats because, at this time of year, unfortunately, criminals are everywhere looking to take advantage of unassuming
shoppers who are just trying to enjoy
the season.
The criminals go out to malls, downtown shopping areas and other retail
hotspots just like the rest of us but
they, instead, are after the goods were
buying, and the cash and cards that
were carrying.
Its scary. And its sad. But its a reality of the world in which we live.
With online shopping as prevalent
as it is, and especially with peer-to-

peer sites such as Craigslist so commonplace, were glad to see that local
police departments are stepping in to
help the honest shoppers as best they
can.
Local police departments have recently begun to make a program available to the residents of town called
safe zones some with areas inside
of the police department building and
some right outside, where people can
conduct legal peer-to-peer transac-

tions. The locations are often equipped

with security cameras that will record
all activity in the zones, 24 hours a day,
seven days a week. The launch of
safe zones are timely, of course, with
these types of transactions becoming
more popular at this time of year.
Police departments play a huge role
in making people feel safe. Their job is
not just to pull drivers over and arrest
criminals.
We couldnt be happier about the
safe zones programs in towns that
offer it, and we urge police departments in other towns to offer similar
programs. If other towns do offer the
safe zones program, please remind
your residents of it, and urge them to
use it.

letter to the editor

Borough correct in keeping
religion, government separate
I would like to offer a response to Mr.
Petrozzis question in the last edition.
I agree that there is no reason why The
Haddonfield Sun should not use the term
Christmas. It is their right to choose, but I
suspect the decision is based on sensitivity
to non-Christians, of which we are many,
not to mention that this is indeed the time
of year of many holidays. We can all agree
the weather and darkness this time of year

is a bit of a downer. A great many cultures

have significant festivals to perk us all up
at this time of year, which led the Catholic
Church to cleverly co-opt the Roman festival of Saturnalia as the time for Christmas
in around the 4th century. A cursory examination of other cultures would reveal
many other examples of the use of decorated evergreen trees to celebrate the winter
solstice predates Christianity itself.
As for the borough, now thats a different
matter entirely.
The First Amendment explicitly and unambiguously prohibits the establishment

of religion by our government. It is that

simple. Its not politically correct, its constitutionally correct. Calling it a holiday
tree is fine. Christmas tree risks breaking
down Jeffersons wall of separation between church and state.
We cant pick and choose which parts of
the Constitution we endorse and dismiss it
as political correctness when it doesnt
align with our personal preferences. I am
very happy to see that my tax dollars are
not used to support a religion and that our
borough is protecting our Constitution.

Cross-county trail system

Strumming up melodies

By Freeholder Jeffrey Nash

Imagine a series
of interconnected
trails through Camden County linking
the Camden waterfront to the Atlantic County line
everywhere
and
in-between.
We
have imagined this
and now we would
like your wish-list for creating the
cross county multi-use trail network.
The trail network will provide residents with new recreational opportunities, while creating an alternative
means of transportation between destinations such as schools, shopping,
parks and recreation facilities. The
Freeholder Board has made advocating and implementing more trails
and alternative means of transportation throughout the region a priority.
This public policy initiative is
another opportunity for residents
to get out of their cars and onto a
bike. Whether its a daily commute
to work or riding for recreation,
these trails provide a sustainable
two-wheel option for residents.
In 2015, Camden County adopted a Bicycling & Multi-Use Trails
Plan, which depicts nearly 500
miles of multi-use trails and onstreet bicycling facilities in every
borough and township in the county.
In order to jump start the implementation of this ambitious plan, county

routes that utilize as many existing
trials and publicly owned lands as
possible to run the approximately 32
miles from the Delaware River waterfront to the Atlantic County line.
The cross county trail we are looking to create would act as a spine to
which future trails and bike lanes can
connect. Camden County has hired
a planning and design team led by
The RBA Group to assist the county

with the trail feasibility

study, which will inFOXGHGHWHUPLQLQJQDO

It is at this point in
the planning process
that it is crucial for us
to get input from the
residents and commuters that will
be using the trails before determinLQJWKHQDOORFDWLRQRIWKHQHWZRUN
The Camden County Freeholder
Boards Division of Environmental Affairs will hold a public input
session to solicit feedback from
Camden County citizens, commuters and visitors regarding the
formation of a multi-use trail.
Join us at the WinterFest Ice Skating
Rink in Cooper River Park, located at
5300 N. Park Drive in Pennsauken,
on December 10 anytime between 1
to 3 pm. There you can view maps
of the countys preliminary route,
and comment on the various alternatives being reviewed. Surveys will
be on hand for attendees to do onsite or take home. There will also be
an interactive map, where citizens

well as install new gravity and

force main piping. The location
will be near the intersection of
Roberts and Wellington avenues
with little to no set back.
The lift station will be below
grade, except for the electrical
controls and emergency power,
and surrounded by a six-foot
fence with landscaping to make it
more aesthetically pleasing. The
old lift station was in need of replacing as it was built in the early
1900s and is not the appropriate

size or location, due to Green

Space and wetlands, according to
Cuthbert.
DeRusso said the new location
could not be changed at this
point, but the size, fencing and
landscaping could be based on
residential input. Construction
should begin soon.
Resident Karen McEntire
asked about putting the lift station at the end of Roberts Avenue
as to not disturb the neighbors
and keep it more out of sight.
Cuthbert explained the only real
place to put it was at its projected
location to intercept the water
flows. Business Administrator
Sharon McCullough confirmed
the borough was also looking at
that location, or very close to it,
for the pump station for when it
owned the utility.
It is very complicated. We had
to have an area where we could
intercept the right flow where
they meet is at this location,
Cuthbert said.
Roberts Avenue residents expressed displeasure in having little input on the location of the
PSA

NJ AIDS/STD Hotline
(800) 624-2377

projects as well as no previous

communication.
We all know we need a better
pumping station. No one is complaining about that, but we are
complaining, how is it that we received a document that said construction starting in November
(without notification beforehand)? Mary Previte said.
It is very gracious for NJAW
to come out and talk to us about it
tonight. But there are several
points where we probably would
have had an opinion Were really concerned about why we
were not informed about this earlier, McEntire said.
DeRusso said he would be
working on better communication in the future.
The other NJAW projects include building two other sewer
lift stations on Atlantic Avenue
and Coles Mill Road and replacing the existing water and sewer
utilities around these sites. The
projects are estimated to cost $8
million. Together, these projects
will better meet peak flows, improve service reliability, reduce
service disruptions and relocate
utilities out of environmentally
sensitive areas, according to
NJAW.
Further information on the
NJAW projects can be found on
its website at www.newjerseyamwater.com.

Joe Murphy works to promote ethics

Joe Murphy, CCEP, a Haddonfield-based attorney with a global
reach, visited and met with professionals in Bosnia and Serbia to
promote compliance and ethics to
help in the fight against corruption. The fall trip was sponsored
by the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics.
Murphy met with leaders from
a variety of business leaders in
the Eastern European countries.
While Murphy has worked with
governments and non-governmental organizations to promote
compliance and ethics anywhere
around the world, this is his first

time in Bosnia and Serbia.

My goal was to help people understand the importance of compliance and ethics programs and
that its not for only for big companies. said Murphy. I wanted
to bust the myth that compliance
is expensive, because it doesnt
have to be.
Murphy discussed some elements from his book, Compliance Programs on a Dollar a Day,
which is free on the SCCEs website, www.SCCE.org. The book
has been translated into four languages.
This has been a busy year for

Murphy, who
has penned and
will publish the
lead article in
the
Rutgers
University Law
Review entitled
Policies in
Conflict: Undermining CorpoMURPHY
rate Self-Policing in 2017.
Murphy is the first to research
the various ways the legal system
has undercut compliance programs. Until now, no one has
brought this information together.

20 THE HADDONFIELD SUN DEC. 7 -13, 2016

All members are descendants of patriots

from the American Revolution
ALL
Continued from page 1
Moorestown
resident
Jodie
Kramer said.
On Dec. 10, 1931, 8-year-old Virginia Luther of Haddonfield became the founding member of the
Elizabeth Haddon Society of the
National Society of the Children
of the American Revolution. The
Elizabeth Haddon Society is the
only organization named after
the founding mother of Haddonfield, Elizabeth Haddon.
For the Children of the American Revolution, all members
younger than 22 are direct descendants of a patriot who helped
to achieve freedoms during the
American Revolution. The organization provides a foundation for
members to gain valuable leadership experience and conduct
meetings with parliamentary procedures and standard protocol at
local, state and national conferences.
It is rare (to be a part of the society) and that is why we are so
proud of it.
Not everyone is qualified to be
a part of the organization, Jodie
said.
It does make you extra proud
of your country when you know
your ancestor fought for it.
Jodie and Carly are descendants of Godfrey Shronk, who
was a part of the Philadelphia
militia who helped George Washington cross the Delaware River
in 1776. He also is said to have provided City Tavern in Philadelphia with its catfish.
In our familys folklore, we
would say we would not be a free
country without Godfrey, Jodie
said.
The mission of the Elizabeth
Haddon Society is timeless and,
as children continue to join the
organization, will continue to preserve American history.
Carly and Jodie work together

Special to The Sun

Elizabeth Haddon Society of the National Society of the Children of

the American Revolution president Carly Kramer stands with Haddonfield borough commissioners to receive a proclamation on the societys 85th anniversary last month.
to create outings for members of
he society to not only learn about
history, but experience it. They
have their meeting often at historical sites and events such as
Washington Crossing, Betsy Ross
House and City Tavern.
I like history more than I did.
Now I know more about it because of the society, Carly said.
I love that history comes to
life, Jodie said.
Throughout the past 85 years,
members of the Elizabeth Haddon Society have created awareness of local historic events including Run For Freedom, which
celebrates Jonas Cattell, a
teenage hero from the American
Revolution; marking historic
trees in Haddonfield to aid in conservation efforts; promoting literacy by donating more than 400
copies of "Happy Birthday, New
Jersey!" to schools and libraries;
honoring American History
Month during the 1940s and 1950s;
raising money to purchase war
bonds during World War II; and
providing volunteers for the Red
Cross during the nation's time of

need.
In honor of the 85th anniversary, the Elizabeth Haddon Society had a celebration at the Indian
King Tavern on Sunday, Dec. 4
where it also revealed a chair it is
donating to the Haddonfield Public Library for the celebration.
The chair, made by the National
Art Honor Society, is created in
honor and memory of Elizabeth
Haddon.
It will be cool to have a memento of the society forever in
the library, Jodie said.
There are just more than 20
members of the Elizabeth Haddon Society of the National Society of the Children of the American Revolution. Jodie said they
are pretty active, but would love
to have more members. Those interested in joining are asked to
contact her at jodiekramer@comcast.net.
We are trying to revive the
memberships. (The Elizabeth
Haddon Society) is one of the
stronger (societies), but it would
be more fun with more kids participating, Jodie said.
