Lesson Planning Framework

Grade Level: 2nd Grade

Subject Area: Science in a Box

GMercyU Student Name: Morgan Ewart

Stage 1 Desired Results

Academic Standard: PDE: 3.2 Physical Sciences: Chemistry and Physics
3.2.2.A4 Reactions
____________________________________________________________________________
Big Idea: (Overarching Theme) Objective:
Physical and Chemical Reactions
Essential Question(s):
Students will consider and reflect on
throughout the lesson:

Enduring Understandings:
At the conclusion of the lesson students
will understand:

What might happen if you combined

two different types of substances?

Students will see a chemical reaction and

will be able to answer questions based on
their observations on a lab sheet

Student Objectives (Outcomes):

At the conclusion of the lesson students will know and be able to:
Students will experiment and explain what happens when two or more substances
are combined by recording their observations on a lab sheet.
Stage 2 Assessment Evidence
Performance Task(s):
Other Evidence:
Students will show what they know
Other evidence which demonstrate
by evidence of/list names of
student competence with the concept(s).
formative or summative checks,
List the names of the performance tasks:
quizzes, tests which indicate
evidence of learning:
Answering questions based on the
experiment and orally discuss what
Completing an experiment
they observed in the experiment
Observing during the experiment
Completing a lab sheet

Stage 3 Learning Plan

Learning Activities:

Preparing students for the lesson: How will you activate prior knowledge, build
background, or review previous lessons?
Motivation:
For motivation I will say, Good Morning Scientists as we can see there are Lab
Coats and Goggles out for us. Who do you think did this? I think the science bug
knew that we were going to do something special today. We have some items on
our desks today. Why do you think we have those set up? (Give students a
chance to answer). I will then pull out my science in a box. WOW! Look at this!
What do you think is in here? Lets look inside oh my goodness I am so nervous to
see what is in this box. Ok, Im going to be brave and just open it. (open box
slowly) Oh my goodness. I was scared for nothingSilly Miss Morgan. It is our
materials for our special project. Ok lets get started.
Bloom Questions:
What is the most important rule before starting any experiment? (Evaluation)
Learning Activities Continued: Describe in sequence, the lesson:
1. Motivation (Look Above)
2. Start the lesson by going over the terms [chemical reaction, substances,
experiment, and hypothesis]
3. Start activating prior knowledge by asking questions to get the
students thinking such as:
a. Has anyone ever seen an experiment done before? Think
back to that time and think of what happened.
b. What is your prediction for this experiment? (Synthesis)
c. What do you think a chemical reaction is? (Knowledge)
4. Have a student from each group come up and collect the materials
5. Have students start the experiment
6. Go through the steps
a. Place empty soda bottle in the center of workspace on top of the pan
b. Mix yeast and warm water until bubbles form
c. Pour hydrogen peroxide into soda bottle using a funnel, add food
coloring, and add dish soap
d. Add yeast and water mixture into the soda bottle, watch Elephant
Toothpaste ooze from the bottle
7. Complete the lab sheet after the experiment is complete
8. Ask some bloom level questions such as:
a. What do you predict will happen when we mix these
substances together? (Synthesis)
b. What conclusions can you draw from this experiment?
(Analysis)
c. What factors would change the experiment? (Application)
d. How would you summarize the experiment? (Comprehension)
e. How would you describe what happen when you mixed each
substance together? (Knowledge)
9. Closure (Look Below)
Materials Needed:
Yeast

Warm Water
Food Coloring
Hydrogen Peroxide
Dish Soap
Pan
Lab sheet
Pencils
Vocabulary/ New or Review:
Substance
Experiment
Chemical Reaction
Hypothesis
Guided Practice: What will students do to use and apply new concepts or skills?
How will you monitor and guide their performance?

Students will be completing the elephant toothpaste experiment

I will be walking my students through the process
I will be walking around the room to check for understanding
I will have my students explain orally what their process through
the experiment
At the end of the lesson, I will ask bloom level questions

Check for Understanding of Student Learning: How will you know if

students grasped the material? What techniques will you use to assess
understanding?
I will be walking around the room checking for understanding by asking
questions and asking the students to explain what they are doing and I
will be walking my students through the process. I will also have my students
completing a lab sheet and explaining the process.
Independent Practice: What will students do independently to use and apply
the new skills and concepts in a meaningful way? How will you assess mastery of
learning?
Students will experiment and explain what happens when two or more substances
are combined by recording their observations on a lab sheet.
I will know if my students understood the lesson if the lab sheet they completed is
correct. Also, after the experiment and the lab sheet is complete I will ask my
students to tell me what they learned.
Differentiated Instruction: How will you provide access to this lesson for all
learners such as students with IEPs, ELLs, gifted, and other learning differences,
re: content, process, and product?

I will have students working in groups of three or four. For my students who may
have difficulty reading I will provide a picture format for directions as well as
verbally and writing it on the board. All of these are available to all students for
whomever needs these provided for them. For the students who may finish the
experiment early I will have Im Finished bags in a basket which each student
can choose when completed their science experiment.
Closure: How will students demonstrate proficiency with todays lesson
objective(s) i.e., Partner Sharing, Exit Ticket, Student Summarizer?
Have students summarize the lesson to check for understanding of the lesson.
Today we as second graders did something that the adults in your house did when
they were in high school. Today we did Chemistry! You can now go home and tell
the adults at home that you did chemistry in second grade. Guess what? Second
Grade, tomorrow we are going to take a trip to the zoo in our own classroom. Be
prepared to share your favorite zoo animal.
