Overview of the Lesson


Lesson Summary:
Students will observe the works of Salvador Dali and the like to collect an
understanding of Surrealism. Students will then develop an art piece in the
style of surrealism. A draft in pencil will be conducted followed by the final
piece in colored pencil and different values.

Create a unique composition that displays their knowledge of value and
surrealism.
Materials/Equipment to be Used in Teaching the Lesson:
Power point, pencils, erasers, draft paper, final paper, colored pencils

Surrealism was a movement in art and literature that explored thoughts of the
subconscious mind and chaos. Surreal artist often times included scenery from
dreams or fantsy.
Surrealism can be achieved through distortion and/or juxtaposition.

Content
Factual Content:
The surrealist movement was inspired by the Dadaist who believed many of
the issues revolving around WWI were cause by excessive rational thought.
Surrealism focuses more on irrational thought and explorations of the

subconscious. Through symbolism of objects and use of distortion and
juxtaposition, surrealists provide clues as to what they might be thinking or
feeling.

Action/Instructional Procedures
Procedures:
1. Students will discuss prior knowledge of Surrealism
2. Teacher will provide powerpoint including definitions, information on, and
examples of surrealism.
3. Students will be given a list of ways of how to create a surreal image and how to
compose a strong composition. (auditory and visually)
4. Students will be asked to create their own surreal art piece. First by conducting a
rough draft to plan out ideas.
5. Students will be instructed on value first auditory, then by example and technique.
6. Students will demonstrate understanding of value by making a value scale.

7. Finally, students will complete their surreal art piece on final paper with colored
pencil paying special attention to composition, and value.
8. Upon completion students will fill out self-reflection form and turn it in.
*Students who finish early may compose any extra credit assignments
