Unit Objective
The unit objective of this lesson is to introduce the concept of comparing and contrasting using
a Venn Diagram. Requisite skills necessary for this lesson is knowing how to distinguish
between similarities and differences. Students need to have read the stories Cinderella and
Snow White.
Lesson Objective
Content Learning Goals and Objectives
Given a Venn diagram, TSW analyzing details from the story and use them to
compare and contrast Snow White and Cinderella by proposing 5 differences and 5
similarities for each character with 80% accuracy.
Student Participation
The goal of this lesson is for students to demonstrate a clear understanding of
comparing and contrasting two characters using a Venn Diagram from analyzing
details from the story.

Technology Integration
The students will use Microsoft word to create their Venn Diagrams and will them
compare and contrast Cinderella and Snow-white.
The key concepts for this lesson is for the students to understand how to compare and
contrast characters using details from two stories.
Academic Language
o Vocabulary: Compare, contrast, similarities.
o Language Function: Analyze, Propose, Listen.
o Discourse: Group discussion, Think-Pair-Share, and question/answer.
In the previous lesson the students read the stories Cinderella and Snow White.
In the next lesson the students will determine the central idea of a text and analyze its
development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary of the text.
The hearing impaired student will sit up front so they can hear the lesson and instructions
clearly. The visually impaired student will sit up front and will be provided with larger
print out of the activity if needed. The students with a learning disability will be
supervised by the teacher to prevent misconceptions on assignment given. For the reading
disability students and students who need enrichment, they will be given an easier version
of the story to read.
This lesson connects with the students personally because it will help students make
better decision when having to choose between two things. This connects to the students
community and culturally because they will be able to know how to distinguish between
similarities and differences of different cultures.
Procedures
Introduction: (5 minutes)
o TTW begin the lesson entering the room dressed as Cinderella.
o Why do you think Im dressed as Cinderella?
o Do you all remember when we read the stories Cinderella and Snow White?
o Today we will learn how to compare and contrast the differences and similarities
of these two characters.
Procedures: (25 minutes)
o TTW will explain to the students to compare is to find similarities.
o TTW will explain to the students to contrast is to find differences.
o TTW compare the Three Little Pigs to the Three Little Bears.
o TTW discuss the differences between the two stories.
o TTW discuss the similarities between the two stories.
o TTW will display a Venn Diagram on the smart board with 9 statements compiled
from the story. There will be 6 differences and 3 similarities of the stories
displayed.
On the SmartBoard TTW drag 2 of the differences and 1 of the similarities
from the story and put them into the correct column using the Venn
Diagram that is displayed on the SmartBoard.
Can you help me put the other statements into the correct column?
TSW go to the SmartBoard and place the statements in the correct column.
TSW independently go to the SmartBoard and place the remaining
statements in the correct column.
Closure
o TTW ask students did he/she place the statements in the correct column?
o Now that we have done examples on the SmartBoard, Can someone tell me
what a Venn Diagram is used for?
Students now know how to compare and contrast items using a Venn
Diagram.
o TTW will now have the students to create their Venn Diagrams on the computer
Microsoft Word.
After students create their Venn Diagrams TSW complete their Venn
Diagrams by comparing and contrasting the two characters Cinderella and
Snow white.
TTW will walk around the room to examine if anyone is needing help and
if everyone is understanding.
Can you tell me what you have learned about Venn diagrams?
What is the connection between venn diagram and similarities and differences?
Individually the students will summarize on a sheet of paper what they learned from the
lesson.
Today we learn about comparing and contrasting. Tomorrow we will determine the central idea
of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text; provide an objective
summary of the text.
Modifications
For the non-mastery students, I will reteach this lesson by using a T-chart of similarities
and differences.
For enrichment and gifted students, they will compare and contrast the plot.
Assessment Evidence
ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:
TTW will assess the Venn diagrams for similarities and differences.
