ICC to display award winning On Card

flat tops height measuring device

InspirOn to show advanced textile

stenter Motex 15000 with new features

Mumbai: ICC Ltd is showcasing its award winning Tops Height Measuring (THM) device,
an innovative On Card technology, to solve uncertainty and a pain area faced by spinners in the
carding department in hall H1, stall D - 26.
The THM, which has been developed by ICCs own research & development team, is a well
thought and engineered device, which can measure the flat tops variations on the machine and
can also be digitalized. This new device takes the data and presents in such a way that a user can
identify essential data in his/her laptop or PC in Microsoft Excel file format.
The data which can be identified includes, overall flat tops height variation, measured in
individual flats online; how much grinding cut will be required to get a certain level of variation
standard; how many points will be ground to achieve the required level. The THM device also
pinpoints the exact flats which needs to be
ground for achieving the required level and lastly
also offers data on which flat tops the on-card
grinding machine need to be set. The data can
be stored for future reference, thus enabling mills
to maintain service records.
THM can also be used to know the
distortion in tops due to change in production
rate, raw material and settings. In addition to
this, the THM can avoid excessive cylinder wear
out on account of inappropriate carding action,
due to few rogue flats and enhance lifetime of
flat tops.
The THM has also won the Research &
Development 2015-16 award from the Textile
Machinery Manufacturers Association (TMMA).

The Motex 15000, while also being manufactured in a sustainable manner, has been developed
with unprecedented features and state-of-the-art aesthetics. As against the Motex 4560, the 15000 offers
15% higher drying efficiency and higher operating speed. The Stenter enables the processor to achieve
even drying and heat setting at higher evaporation rates with optimum energy utilisation, which translates
into lower operating cost per metre of fabric.
The Motex 15000 also achieves consistent and reproducible results across the length and width of
the fabric, even with larger overfeed adjustment range up to 80%. It ensures higher stretch, irrespective
of the higher GSM of the fabric and is equipped with pin protection flapper for knitted fabrics. The stenter
requires lubrication once a year or even later, while offering easy access and retrieval of operating and
maintenance manual through GUI. Its higher squeezing capability ensures optimum pick up percentage
for specific processes like wet on wet finish with desired add on, resulting in better productivity. It comes
equipped with a Tilting Trough with optimised capacity to reduce drain losses.

line to remove weaving oils with reduced economic and environmental impact in hall H5, stall A6 B5. With
the Bianco Happy Scour, it is now possible to obtain excellent quality fabrics at much lower costs than
those incurred in traditional washing.
Bianco Happy Scour has been especially developed for the finishing of knitted or woven fabrics
made from synthetic fibre or elastomer, which are the most sensitive to shrinkage and have got the highest
oil content. This technology can be successfully applied on all kinds of fabrics, which need to be washed
before heat setting.
The Bianco Happy Scour is mounted in front of a stenter and when combined with a traditional
squeezing padder, allows continuous in-line preparation and fabrics are produced in a way, so do not need
washing before dyeing. Bianco Happy Scour utilises a speciality chemical product for the scouring of oils,

Mumbai: TumKalip Aparat will be showing its range of

quality spare parts in hall 6 , stall no. D-11. TumKalip will also be

expressly developed for this purpose, which contains natural

water-soluble compound; cleaning agent; dispersing agent and
lastly a sequestering agent.
The technology guarantees an absolutely tensionless
process and furthermore the special treatment in the washing
tank with nozzles, helps create a gentle and effective relaxation
for the fabrics.
By using this Bianco machine, there is no smoke at the
stenters entry and exit and after heat setting, fabrics scoured
with Bianco Happy Scour, also have a soft and natural handle,
as all the oils are removed before the fabrics enters the stenter

and do not get burnt into the fabric.

When using conventional technologies, the smell of knitting oils inside untreated fabric is
unmistakable, but when processing them in the Bianco Happy Scour, this smell vanishes, thus confirming
that oils have been removed.
After heat setting, the fabrics which have been scoured in Happy Scour will incur far less yellowing
and have a better uniform tone compared to partially scoured fabrics, as fabrics scoured improperly will
never give a perfect dyeing result. While printed or dyed fabrics appear uniform, compact and with a soft
handle without adding softeners, when fabrics are processed on the Happy Scour.
The shortening of the dyeing time, due to the absence of fabric pre-treatment has minimal damage on
fibre; resultantly the fibre properties remain, almost unchanged. The Happy Scour process also guarantees
the best recipe in terms of performance and cost saving.
The consumption of water inside the washing tank is only given by the fabrics absorption. The
second rinsing tank gives excellent results, primarily due to the innovative nozzles washing fabrics on both
sides, thereby leading to extremely reduced water consumption in the range of 4-6 litres per kg of fabrics.

the Saurer E label, offers energy savings of up to 50% in the tire cord cabling process, according to the
manufacturer. Since energy represents by far the most significant cost factor in the overall cabling process,
this promises revolutionary production cost savings for manufacturers of tire cord, the company explains.
The reduction in energy consumption also results in a lowering of the heat load in production facilities,
which in turn leads to a lowering of air conditioning costs. The higher economic efficiency is also said to be
increased by up to 50% fewer yarn breaks, improved quality and high machine efficiency.

Apparel exports to US decline

Mumbai: Indian apparel

exporters are struggling while
those in Bangladesh and Vietnam
have gone from strength to
strength in the first nine months of
the current year. During the period
under review, Indian apparel
exports have declined by (-) 0.08
per cent to US $ 2,876.59 million
as compared to US $ 2,878.79
million in the corresponding
period last year.
In the month of September
particularly, Indias apparel export
percentage to the US changed
from positive to negative; till the
end of August this year Indias
growth (albeit marginal) was up
0.06 per cent.

The categories most hit

during the period were sweaters
(negative 49.60 per cent), jackets
and blazers (negative 10.10 per
cent), ladies skirts (negative
21.47 per cent) and suits and
ensembles (negative 11.75 per
cent).
It is pertinent to mention
here that the countrys exports
to the European Union are also
not doing well enough. In the
first eight months of this year,
Indian apparel exports saw a
marginal growth of 0.33 per
cent as against Vietnam and
Bangladesh that registered a
growth rate of 8.26 per cent and
6.88 per cent, respectively.

Strong Monitoring
Mechanism for ISDS

New Delhi: Strong

monitoring mechanism for
Integrated Skill Development
Scheme (ISDS) seems to be
on top priority for Ministry of
Textiles (MoT), Government
of India.
Physical verification
module with a feature to upload
videos of visits in stipulated
time can be a good tool for it.
ISDS is one of the most
appreciated schemes to train
the workforce for Indian textile
industry.
Union Textiles Minister
Smriti Irani had a meeting in
New Delhi (India) with senior
officers of MoT to review the
implementation of ISDS and
also recommended a few
measures to strengthen its
monitoring mechanism and
increase its outreach for
imparting training to individuals
in the textile sector.
She also discussed
functioning of Project
Management Unit under ISDS.
The web-based
Management Information
System (MIS), which has
been devised to monitor skill

training programmes, was also

reviewed in the meeting.
It is worth mentioning
that ISDS has been in
limelight due to less number
of placements.
Most of the states
having textile industry often
demand to train more, but MoT
has suggested to first improve
the placement percentage of
already trained candidates.
Even in one of the latest
documents, the same was
advised to Gujarat as it (Gujarat)
also asked to enhance the
target of training from 30,000 to
60,000 individuals; Rajasthan
asked to allocate additional
target of 6,000 persons (under
ISDS) in this FY as Central
Government allocated target
of 5,000 only while the state
wants to train 11,000.
Ti l l n o w, 2 1 , 5 7 7
candidates have been trained
under ISDS in the textile sector
through 556 centres across the
country. Also, Rs. 1,029.19

the scheme; however only Rs.
629.05 crore has been received
so far by the sates.

85 to 95% of the environments
on the earths surface, allowing
Gore to evaluate the performance
of its fabrics products in specific
conditions and collect quantitative
data on the protection provided
and resulting comfort of the
wearer. Meanwhile, the new
Heat and Flame Protection lab
allows Gore to precisely measure
and analyse the ability of its
products to provide the three
key elements of burn protection:
flame resistance, thermal
insulation, and thermal stability.
Measuring potential

China will have great gains from the Presidency of Donald Trump

Mr. Arvind Sinha - CEO

M/s. Business Advisors Group
China has been a very favorable topic for
U.S. politicians for last three decades, and the 2016
election was no exception. Former U.S. Secretary of
State Hillary Clinton repeatedly promised to stand up
to China and hold it accountable to international trade
rules, but the exact wording of her statements usually
left her enough room to avoid action if necessary.
However, President-elect Donald Trumps anti-trade,
anti-China rhetoric, however, unambiguously bound
him to decisive action.
Now since he will be in White House very
soon, he has to take tough decisions to fulfill his
commitments made during Presidential campaign.
Trump will have to thoroughly discuss and plan
these implementations has he will come to know now
facts of various matters which he has been discussing
during the campaign and he will find a difficult to
keep many promises made during campaign. With
Republicans in control of both the Senate and the
House of Representatives, he won't be able to blame
Congress if he fails to deliver. In fact, he could make
good on most of his promises on trade and China
through executive action, without Congressional
approval. U.S. President Barack Obama's penchant
for governing by executive order means that many
of his initiatives can be reversed with the stroke of a
pen. Expect a quick end, for example, to U.S.-Chinese
cooperation on climate change.
At the very beginning of his campaign, Trump
pledged to label China a currency manipulator on
day one in office. Trump has also vowed to take legal
action against Beijing (domestically and at the World
Trade Organization) and to slap punitive tariffs on
China if it does not stop its illegal activities. Not much
wiggle room there.
On top of all this is Trump's pledge to scrap
the Trans-Pacific Partnership, Obamas flagship trade,
investment, and intellectual property deal. In theory,
the TPP should attract broad support from the U.S.
political establishment. In practice, it has become
politically toxic.
Primarily a tool for spreading U.S. interests
abroad, Trump has portrayed it as a Trojan horse for
foreignand ultimately Chineseinfluence.
Those were the campaign promises. What is
the reality? President Trump's China policy is likely to
be much less aggressive than candidate Trump's. His
language may not have been as carefully chosen as
Clinton's, but his stance is not as extreme as it may
appear. China probably has little to fear from Trump.
And it may even stand to gain.
Trump has loudly, repeatedly, and
unequivocally promised to instruct his secretary of
the treasury to label China a currency manipulator
on day one of his presidency. There is little reason to
doubt his commitment to do so.
Everyone knows that China is a currency
manipulator and has been for the last 40 years. All
countries take actions to manage their currencies,
but China is more overt about it than most. Diplomatic
politesse is the only reason China has dodged the
label for so long.
The problem for Trump is that these days,
China is more likely to be manipulating its currency
up. Most countries accused of currency manipulation
are accused of doing the opposite: a weak currency
boosts export competitiveness.
In fact, of the six countries on the U.S.
Treasury Department's currency manipulation watch
list, five are depressing the values of their currencies.
By contrast, China has intervened heavily
in foreign currency markets to prevent a rapid RMB
depreciation, according to a recent U.S. Treasury
Department report.
The communiqu goes on to note that over
the last year China has sold more than $570 billion
in foreign currency assets to prevent more rapid RMB
depreciation. That represents an enormous market
intervention to keep the RMB strongand make
Chinese exports less competitive.

China has not been manipulating its currency

as a gift to U.S. exporters. It has been intervening to
gain accession to the International Monetary Fund's
global benchmark basket of currencies and to put
a lid on the massive capital flight of late 2015 and
early 2016. So although China clearly is a currency
manipulator, and Trump's Treasury Department might
label it as such, the only realistic remedy would be
for Washington to continue monitoring China. Right
now, Beijings actions are helping U.S. exporters, not
hurting them.
TRADE AND RETRIBUTION
Trumps threat to start a trade war with China
is a more serious concern. Here the issue is big steel.
Steel is a politically sensitive topic in Midwestern
states such as Indiana, Michigan, and Ohiostates
that propelled Trump to the presidency. With an eye to
2020, Trump can ill afford to be seen as weak on steel.
But widespread media panic over the
possibility that Trump will place tariffs on Chinese
steel is largely overblown. The United States routinely
slaps punitive tariffs on Chinese exports. For example,
in May the Obama administration hit China with tariffs
of 451 percent for corrosion-resistant steel and 522
percent for flat-rolled steel. Chinese tires, chemicals,
and other products also face heavy anti-dumping
duties. The global economy has not ground to a halt.
Given extensive Chinese state intervention in
its steel industry (which is largely state-owned), U.S.
trade protection against Chinese steel is inevitable.
The question isn't whether to act; it is about how
much action to take. The prior existence of relatively
uncontroversial Obama administration tariffs in the

range of 500 percent doesnt offer much room for

concern about Trumps future actions on steel.
Some of Trumps vaguer statements on the
campaign trailfor example, that all Chinese exports
enjoy unfair trade subsidies of anywhere from 20 to 45
percentdo not bind him to slapping indiscriminate
tariffs on all Chinese-made goods. In any case,
Trumps allegations of unfair competition are probably
true. Labor and environmental standards in China are
atrocious, and state subsidies are rife.
But tariffs are unlikely in industries where
there are no major U.S. competitors for Chinese
imports, or where goods are manufactured in China
by U.S. companies. Industries that may once have
been politically sensitive, such as electronics and
footwear, no longer are. Trump is more likely to place
duties on high-value durable goods, such as subway
carriages and specialized construction equipment.
These moves wont make the national headlines,
but they will help Trump on the stump in 2020, when
he will have to convince Midwestern voters that he
delivered on his trade promises.
A GIFT TO CHINA
Chinas biggest cause for cheer is that the
populist turn seems to have ended all possibility that
the United States will ratify the 12-country TPP. The
agreement will only enter into operation if at least six
of the countries involved, constituting 85 percent of the
groups GDP, ratify it. That means without the United
States, there will be no TPP.
The TPP is highly controversial for many
reasons, but one thing is clear: it is a United States
centered trade agreement that strongly favors U.S.

interests.
On the campaign trail, Trump repeatedly
warned that if the TPP came into force, China would
eventually enter the TPP through the back door at
a later date. He didnt seem to understand that the
whole point of the TPP is to set the rules of twenty-first
century trading without input from China, then make
China agree to those rules in order to join.
Trumps unequivocal pledge to dump the
TPP even compelled Clinton, who had once called
the deal the gold standard, to disavow it. Now the
Obama administration has publicly proclaimed that it
will not lobby Congress to ratify the TPP during the
lame duck session, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch
McConnell has clearly stated that the bill will not be
brought to a vote this year.
Killing the TPP may be the one great gift that
Trump (and the rest of the dysfunctional U.S. political
establishment) gives to China. When Trump set out on
this political odyssey a year and a half ago, he gave
a rambling kick-off speech in which he said over and
over again how much he loves China. He said that
Chinas leaders are smarter and more capable than
our own. The self-inflicted death of the TPP may just
prove him right.
Hence actions of President Donald Trump
will be watched Global Community very carefully
particularly in case of China & Iran. China it looks
stands to gain considerably because of exist of TPP
and USA may not find easy replacement of Chinese
goods because of capacity constrains globally and
nobody can match Chinese production capacities.
This has to be very carefully watched now.

China Paring Down Its Excess Stocks - ICAC

USA: The World ending

stocks increased by 140% from
2009/10 to 2014/15, when they
reached a world record of 22.2
million tons. In 2015/16, the drop
in world production led to a 14%
reduction in stocks to 19.1 million
tons. World ending stocks are
forecast to decrease further by
7% to 17.8 million tons at the end
of 2016/17 as China continues to
reduce its stocks.
Ending stocks in China,
where much of the excess stocks
are held, decreased by 13% to
11.3 million tons as the Chinese
government sold over two million
tons from its official reserves from
May through September 2016.
The government restricted
import quota to the volume
required by its WTO commitments
in 2015 and 2016 and announced
that it will continue to do so in
2017.
In addition, the
government is planning to begin
sales from its reserves in March
2017 when the majority of the new
crop will have been sold. Stocks
in China are expected to decline
by 15% to 9.6 million tons by the
end of 2016/17.
After falling by 16% to
7.9 million tons, stocks outside
of China may rise by 4% to 8.2
million tons. The stock-to-use
ratio for the world less China is
projected at 34%, which is about
four months of consumption, and
in line with the 10-year average.
In 2016/17, world cotton

production is projected to
increase by 7% to 22.4 million
tons as a 9% increase to 753
kg/ha in the world average yield
offsets a 2% contraction in world
cotton area to
29.7 million hectares.
India will remain the worlds
largest cotton producer, although
its production is forecast to remain
unchanged from 2015/16 at 5.8
million tons.
Output in China is
projected to decrease by 4% to
4.6 million tons while production
in the United States is expected
to grow by 24% to 3.5 million tons.
After a 34% drop in
production due to adverse
weather, competition with other
crops, low prices and an outbreak
of pink bollworm, Pakistans
cotton production is expected
to recover by 24% to 1.9 million
tons in 2016/17. After facing lower
inventories in 2016 due to strong
export demand, cotton production
is forecast to increase by 8% to
1.4 million tons in Brazil.
In 2016/17, world cotton
consumption is projected to
remain unchanged at 23.8 million
tons, despite the widening gap
between polyester prices and
international cotton prices. Mill
use is expected to rise in three of
the top ten consuming countries
Bangladesh, Vietnam, and the
United States, where
consumption is forecast to
increase by 12% to 1.2 million
tons, 13% to 1.1 million tons and

World textile industry leaders converge in Jaipur Italys domestic markets slows down ACIMIT

Jaipur: The Confederation of Indian Textile

Industry hosted the annual conference of the
International Textile Manufacturers Federation
(ITMF) in Jaipur, Rajasthan. The event saw the
largest gathering of global textile leaders. Held
in India after a gap of 14 years, the three-day
conference saw participation of over 370 delegates
from across the world that included manufacturers,
traders, retailers, economists, government officials
and policy analysts.
Addressing the conference, Textile Minister
Hon. Smt. Smriti Irani said that India had big
potential to attract investors and global buyers in this
sector as it had a five-thousand-year-old tradition in
this sustainable, efficient and transparent industry.
She assured the industry that the government was
keen in providing smooth and hassle free business
environment.
Smt. Irani stressed the huge scope for
growth of technical textiles in India, and called
on the industry to approach the government with
suggestions. I have hardly seen any segment of
the industry that has come forward with suggestions
except for Jute. We are ready to discuss issues
and find a solution, she said. She also asked the
industry to invest more on R&D. If the R&D is not
productive, the industry will be isolated. My sense
is that R&D will be fruitful if it is backed by industry,
said the minister.
Smt. Rashmi Verma, Textile Secretary in her
keynote address, said that the industry needed more
technological advancements, and appealed to the
investors and entrepreneurs to enhance investment
and modernisation to increase productivity,
sustainability, and quality in Indias textile goods.
The growth of textile industry is socially and
economically significant in India. Modern technology
is the backbone of the industry, and is considered as

the biggest challenge for the Industry now, she said,

and highlighted the policy reforms undertaken by the
government in ease of doing business, and helping
the industry to modernise and improve productivity.
Mr. Tiang Wuan, ITMF President made
the opening address to the conference, the theme
of which was Global Textile Economy in the New
Normal. Mr. Naishadh Parikh, Chairman CITI
welcomed all the delegates to the conference.
Plenary sessions were held on textile value
chain management, sustainability, transparency of
businesses, cotton vs. other fibres, technical textile
and nonwoven, retail and e-commerce, where
experts gave thought-provoking presentations.
The conference came at a time of many
opportunities for the Indian textile industry. I believe
the success of the conference has helped in
creating a much more positive impression among
international players about Indian textile sector,
and making the Indian entrepreneurs to be more
ambitious in the global reach out, said Mr Binoy
Job, Secretary General, CITI.
The deliberations at the conference saw
the delegates accepting the challenges of the new
global economic dynamics to sustain the business
by adopting best and innovative business practices.
In the backdrop of changing global textile
trade and business landscape, India is looked upon
as a preferred sourcing and investment destination
by western developed markets and emerging
industrial economies for textile goods.

Italy: The orders index for textile machinery recorded an

increase for the third quarter of 2016, thanks to positive sales
figures abroad. Based on an industry survey conducted by ACIMIT,
the Association of Italian Textile Machinery Manufacturers, for
the period from July to September 2016 the overall order intake
increased by 16% compared to the same period last year. The third
quarter value for 2016 stood at 101.1 points (2010 basis = 100).
However, this growth applied to foreign markets only,
where the index recorded an absolute value of 112.3 points (+20%
compared to July - September 2015). In Italy, the index stood at 48
points, dropping off by 14% over the same quarter in 2015.
ACIMIT President Raffaella Carabelli commented on these
figures from Shanghai, where ITMA Asia + CITME, one of the
industrys major trade fairs, has just come to a close. This data
on orders confirms the significant vitality in foreign markets, states
Raffaella Carabelli,
Carabelli. Here too in Shanghai, weve met many entrepreneurs
President of ACIMIT
who want to invest; and not just the Chinese. The trade fair closed
with over 100,000 visitors, fully 20% of which hailed from abroad.
On the other hand, the situation in Italys domestic market appears to fluctuate somewhat. The order
intake has declined after two consecutive quarters of growth, observes Carabelli. Were still far from an
effective recovery for the domestic market. However, were confident that the plan put forward by the Italian
Government for 2017 fiscal year can give confidence to businesses who need to invest.

L. Gore & Associates new fabric testing facility

USA: L. Gore & Associates has opened a new

Biophysics and Heat and Flame Protection facility
to measure the properties of component materials,
Gore laminates, and fully constructed garments and
footwear in new, expanded and relevant conditions.
The new Biophysics lab, a state-of-the-art
facility, has the capabilities to measure performance,
protection, breathability and comfort for the end-user,
and can recreate a wide range of environmental
conditions to understand the potential impact on
the end-user.
The new Heat and Flame Protection lab
enables to precisely measure and analyse the ability
of its products to provide the three key elements of
burn protection: flame resistance, thermal insulation,
and thermal stability.

The facility has equipment like Cone

Calorimeter which can measure the heat release
characteristics of the fabrics used in finished
garments.
It also allows for measurement of smoke
generated from a fire event involving these products.
Additionally, the Stored Thermal Energy Tester
evaluates time to burn in low heat flux scenarios
where a firefighter could experience sweat burns
from standing outside the fire ground.
Another key tool at the lab Pyrolysis
Combustion Flow Calorimeter (PCFC)/Micro
Combustion Calorimeter (MCC) allows to rapidly
characterize heat release and fire-preventing char
generation in the raw materials used to produce
the garment.

Bangladesh: According to the report

titled, Dangerous Delays on Worker Safety
jointly published by International Labour Rights
Forum, Worker Rights Consortium, Clean Clothes
Campaign and Maquila Solidarity Network, Alliance
is downplaying the safety assessment progress of
its member companies in Bangladesh.
According to the analysis of the report, worker
safety issues exist in the factories which make
clothes for apparel retailers like Walmart, GAP, VF
Corporation, Target and Hudsons Bay Company.
The analysis was made on 175 RMG factories
(suppliers of the five mentioned retailers) which are
both Accord- and Alliance-approved.
It was found that the factories that Alliance
designates as On Track on its site, 41 per cent have
uncorrected structural problems, 57 per cent have

Vietnam market
growth by 2016-25
Vietnam: The textile chemicals market in
Vietnam is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of over
16 per cent during the period 2016-2025, according
to a report by TechSci Research Vietnam
Textile Chemicals Market By Product Type, By
End Use Application, Competition Forecast and
Opportunities, 2011 2025.
This growth rate is expected on account of
higher living standards of consumers and growing
demand for fine fabric items coupled with increasing
number of industrial setups in the country, states
the report.
Moreover, growing inclination of consumers
towards new and brighter shades demand from
beige and off-white shades is expected to positively
influence the Vietnam textile chemicals market.

China exports to US

China: In the first nine months of the current

year, Chinas overall apparel exports to the US are
decreasing as the country registered a drop of (-)
8.64 per cent to US $ 21. 25 billion in the current year
as against US $ 23.26 billion in the corresponding
period last year.
However there are two categories that have
seen a positive trend in the period under review
ladies blouses and babies wear.
While ladies blouses note 1.21 per cent
year-on-year increase to US $ 1. 88 billion, babies
wear registered a massive growth of 54.54 per cent
year-on-year growth to US $ 194. 95 billion in the
nine-month period this year.

Sri Lankan export

may get affected
Sri Lanka: Sri Lankas Deputy Minister of
Foreign Affairs, Dr. Harsha De Silva cautioned the
country about the impact of any small change in the
US trade policy due to political alterations there, on
account of the apparel industrys dependence on
the US market.
At Sri Lanka Apparel Exporters Associations
AGM held in Colombo, the Minister averred, Given
that America is very important to us, 25 per cent of
our exports go to the US and 70 per cent of that was
apparels, I dont think in the short term there is going
to be any misalignment.
Any way any small shock can have a large
repercussion because of the dependency we have
on the US economy. Without TPP, is it possible for
Sri Lanka to create opportunities in this unsettled
global trade environment?

Bangladesh Cotton
Consumption increased

Bangladesh: According to the United States

Department of Agriculture (USDA), this years cotton
consumption in Bangladesh is expected to rise 4.91
per cent year-on-year to US $ 6.4 million bales on
account of the higher demand from spinners and
garment makers in the country.
The report predicted that in the current
cotton year, which begins on first of August and
ends on July 31st, more than 430 spinning mills in
Bangladesh will consume US $ 6.4 million bales of
cotton. Bangladesh spends more than US $ 3 billion
to import cotton in a year.
More than 80 per cent of its apparel products
are cotton-based and the rest 20 per cent include
viscose, polyester and other materials.
Currently, local spinners can supply nearly
90 per cent of raw materials for the knitwear and
40 per cent for the woven sector.

compromised fire exits, and 58 per cent do not have

a properly functioning fire alarm system.
The report further stated that 62 per cent
still lack viable fire exits, 62 per cent do not have a
properly functioning fire alarm system, and 47 per
cent have major uncorrected structural problems.
The Rights platform reportedly said, These
brands, despite knowing the risks for a considerable
time, have failed to make sure these factories are
safe.
The Alliances approach to reporting safety
progress legitimately raises the question whether the
Alliance is prioritising the protection of its member
brands reputations over the protection of workers.
